Video showing the process of drawing the Columbus Bridge in Forest Park, St. Louis, MO. Drawn by Michael Halbert of INKART Studio. The drawing was drawn by hand with a Crow Quill pen and black India ink. The drawing support is white Ampersand Claybord, 7 x 5 inches and 1/8 inch thick (white).
Thi drawing process started with a pencil sketch on location. A couple photos where also taken with an iPhone camera. Back in the studio the sketch and photos are used as general reference. The final pen and ink drawing is done with black India ink with a crow quill pen on 7 x 5 inch white Claybord. The sketch or photo reference are not transferred to the Claybord. The drawing starts by drawing directly on the Claybord with ink and brush. Drawing with ink on Claybord is a spontaneous way of inking. Working directly with ink is possible, at least partly, because mistakes and revision made on Claybord are fairly easy to correct.
Claybord is a brand of scratchboard. However, unlike most brands of scratchboard it is not precoated with black India ink. It's white. White clay that can be easily scratched. This board is firm enough to draw on with a pen, so it can be worked on just like any other pen and ink drawing. The advantage with Claybord, however, is that it can also be coated with black and scratched off just like any other black scratchboard. You have the best of both worlds. Work pen and ink on white when you want black lines, and coat the board black where you want to scratch out white lines.
Although the drawing starts with an on-location-sketch (en plein air) and with some reference photos, most of the drawing is made up. The bridge is about the only thing that was kept true to the reality. I think it's more fun that way and it still gives the feel of reality. Even people who are very familiar with the Columbus Bridge won't notice that most of the landscape is imagined.
