Le fonti su di lui sono poco precise e rese più oscure dalla leggenda. In pellegrinaggio diretto a Roma dopo aver donato tutti sui beni ai poveri, si sarebbe fermato a ad Acquapendente, dedicandosi all'assistenza degli ammalati di peste e facendo guarigioni miracolose che diffusero la sua fama. Peregrinando per l'Italia centrale si dedicò ad opere di carità e di assistenza promuovendo continue conversioni. Sarebbe morto in prigione, dopo essere stato arrestato presso Angera da alcuni soldati perché sospettato di spionaggio. Invocato nelle campagne contro le malattie del bestiame e le catastrofi naturali, il suo culto si diffuse straordinariamente nell'Italia del Nord, legato in particolare al suo ruolo di protettore contro la peste.
Si narra che mentre il santo giaceva moribondo in una grotta, colpito dalla peste, un cane Breton che si era accorto di lui, di nome Oreste o Reste, lo aiutò a guarire portandogli ogni giorno un pezzo di pane rubato alla tavola del suo ricco padrone.

L' antica tradizione dei vasai e ceramisti, vanto di Gerocarne, e la generosità della gente rendono attraente questo piccolo borgo.

You will see the magnificent and historic celebration of San Rocco, protector of the sick and disabled.
The sources on him are inaccurate and made more obscure by the legend. On a direct pilgrimage to Rome after having donated all goods to the poor, he would have stopped at Acquapendente, dedicating himself to assisting the sick with the plague and making miraculous healings that spread his fame. Peregrinando for central Italy he devoted himself to works of charity and assistance promoting continuous conversions. He would have died in prison, after being arrested near Angera by some soldiers on suspicion of espionage. Invoked in the campaigns against cattle diseases and natural disasters, his cult spread extraordinarily in Northern Italy, linked in particular to his role as protector against the plague. Gregory XIII introduced the name of Rocco in the Roman Martyrology, under the pontificate of Urban VIII the Congregation of Rites agreed an Office and a Mass for the churches built in honor of the saint.
It is said that while the saint was lying dying in a cave, struck by the plague, a Breton dog who had noticed him, named Oreste or Reste, helped him to heal by bringing him a piece of bread stolen from the table of his rich master every day.
