I suppose that’s one opinion. But seasoned Disney artists like Aaron Blaise COMPLETELY disagree. So do I. I’m afraid it’s OVER for ToonSquid. You had a good run, but Procreate Dreams is an unparalleled paradigm shift for those with the capacity to learn how to use it! At least for TRADITIONAL animation. However, Toonsquid is probably still perfect for digital puppetry 🤷🏾
@@Tonabillity how? Toonsquid does everything Dreams tried to do AND more. When the dev releases the upcoming FX features…nothing will even hold a candlelight. Dreams has years before it will even have the basic animation features and on top of that…it will never have vector animation capabilities. All in all, its an elementary app for children to dip their toes into motion graphics.
@@Kripeld You’re absolutely right. For you it’s probably about features. I can understand that. And unless you’re a Disney level animator, it’s probably perfect. However, I’m ONLY interested in pure traditional, old school Animation. I’m sketching in Dreams RIGHT NOW! Yes, I said SKETCHING. Because what I love most about Procreate, is that it feels EXACTLY like a sketchbook! For me, sketching in sketchbooks has ALWAYS been the most fun EVER!! Because of that, it’s giving me a greater capacity to actually study the subtleties of animation and sharpen my DRAWING skills. Yes, BASIC missing features like merge layers and the Lasso tool is driving me nuts! But it’s like complaining that the window wipers aren’t working in my futuristic hyperdrive starship. 🤷🏾 So for now, I just focused on the technology that’s actually WORKING, while waiting on the upgrades. They’ve been pretty consistent with upgrading features at least once per month, so I’m hoping that by January or February those headaches will be resolved Meanwhile, I’m too spoiled by those EXQUISITE procreate brushes that feel like BUTTER, and with such a thrilling UI, I’m not ABOUT to turn back to the Stone Age. Sorry, It’s just so much more fun than any other App I’ve used!!🌟🌟🌟 I just love how easy and fluid it is to adjust the timeline. And NOTHING beats the ease of one-finger HORIZONTAL timeline scrolling, in full screen mode!! Yes, I know ToonSquid also has VERTICAL finger scrolling but it always feels awkward and clunky to me. And don’t get me started on Dream’s, Performance mode!! That’s a whole Nother level of phenomenon!!! Hey, if you love ToonSquid, have at it. I’m not trying to talk you out of enjoying your favorite App. But for ME, I’ve moved on. Procreate Dreams is the paradigm shift of the FUTURE. I’m so hyped to know that they will be UPGRADING it for the rest of our lives!
I think this showed me that procreate really is for people who prefer to draw and don't want to mess with all the extra options or issues of complicated programs. Toonsquid reminds of PC programs not a program for a artist who draws
Dropped Procreate dreams week 1 then I picked up ToonSquid IT IS SO MUCH BETTER it's not even funny the only thing procreate has over it is the performance mode but that is for very specific work flows that aren't the majority. ToonSquid feels like what I thought Procreate Dreams would be. I feel like the only way procreate dreams could improve is a huge Overhaul of the UI and UX which I don't think they will do.
When Dreams released, I instantly could tell that ToonSquid was the better app. Dreams was laggy, glitchy, no UNDO OR REDO BUTTONS? Insane. They released dreams for black friday, to make high profit. They could not care less for the consumer. All they cared about was their pocket. And they got everyone with a 20-dollar fee
I have been searching for the app with the same features as flash...and never found Toonsquid ! So I was very excited to discover procreate dreams. I surely had put my money in Toonsquid if only I knew ! Thx for this vid !
Thanks for this video. I’m going to stick with ToonSquid. I hope they can add some Gaussian blur filters for adding depth to backgrounds - for me, that’s all I’m missing 👍
Toon squid is the way to go for half the price! I bought it a couple days after dreams, because drawing was like using procreate lite and animation was a nightmare. maybe by the end of the year there will be some pretty solid upgrades to it, but it will probably take like 2yrs to get close to toon squid. The two things I want for TS is more brushes or a procreate brush converter. The 2nd thing is a bone tool for rigging. maybe also auto mouth.
Toonsquid definitely takes the Cake and Cheese 🧀 🍰 Cheesecake 😍😋 the only thing its missing is a powerful Export engine... gotta draw in Procteate and Import to TS for high quality.
Oh and Support* and Updates*... (hello selection tool and timeline layers)* Gotta Lock before yu can zoom in. And god forbid yu press the wrong button nd lose all ur stuff. But going easy on the Dev cuz (He's a one man team currently)
Both apps need improvement. I hope he will continue updating the app and that he can increase his team. It would be a shame if he stops developing the app.
I agree, PD also has sum interesting capabilities. I'll be buying both, but waiting for PD to fix it kinks. Android users are Jealous of US!!! I made the right choice investing in an IPAD 😊 IPAD Animators got it MADE either way 🥳
What a wonderful video l had no idea what toon squid was it seems like a great app for a 1 person developer, But l remain hopeful that things will get better as I believe in the team behind procreate 🙂
Hey Stayf, thanks for the very good informative video comparing two animation apps. I sure hope I get a iPad for Christmas for tackling digital art more mobily compared to my acom one. When I do saveup enough money to get myself an iPad. I'll definitely give giving both apps a try and see which one I like the best. Also I'll be definitely checking out the rest of your videos as well.
I believe my problem with Dreams is the way it limits the features for another styles of animations away from frame-by-frame. I’m not saying frame-by-frame is wrong, on the contrary…but there might be people (including myself) that manages stuff like rigging, hierarchies and symbols better (stuff that ToonSquid has, really complete). And for people like me, who does a MIX of frame by frame, symbols and hierarchies, Dreams feels way too unfinished, and I’d still prefer ToonSquid. However, let’s see what Dreams brings to us in the future 👍
For ipad. But for pro animator world with big drawing displays and a computer. Toonboom, Opentoonz (using clip studio for vector lines) Digicel Flipbook. I mean...i think i trust what disney, ghibli and thousands of japanese animatots use over dreams, squid or cpeg.
I am starting out in 2d Animation and was confused if Clip Studio, Callipeg, Procreate Dreams and Toonsquid is the best option for frame by frame and keyframe animation? I am more a fan of non suscription based apps unless absolutely necessary
I explain it in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RxPTI-GIfpk.htmlsi=pCfa8DC1XctvFfxU It is hand drawn animation using a 3D video as reference.
@@StayfDraws oh, interesting. With Procreate, I find my self doing most of my work in Procreate, and importing it into Procreate Dreams as backgrounds and sequences to be grouped.
But one problem with toonsquid is that when you import procreate images(raster images) to toonsquid for animating, you can't extend image beyond their stage border, otherwise that will crop that image. With raster images you can't draw beyond that rectangle border. That kind of makes the animation restricted. However this isn't the case with raster brush in toonsquid but the problem is I don't prefer toonsquid for drawing. For drawing I use only procreate because I am using it for almost 6 years and now I am so so much habitual to it and drawing in other app slows down my speed and efficiency.
I think the same as you, I think that procreate dreams is an animation application that falls short, you cannot use form with in normal procreate... that makes the application lose a lot Toonsquid has a vector brush and that already makes it gain a lot as an animation application, I regret seeing Procreate Dream taken and not Toonsquid because I see it as a better work tool and at a better price than Procreate Dreams, Procreate Dreams could be an i
thanks so much for this video, very well explained. I have one question Im looking for a animation app that can record live while your drawing, im doing a lot with lines that move so i want the start to finish of the line recorded, i know procreate dreams has a record button but does it only record the image moving or can you also record the drawing? thanks in advance
In Procreate you can record every stroke you make and export it as a video. The record button in Procreate Dreams only records when you move an object around.
Callipeg has this exact additional feature along with every feature of toonsquid... And also they update all very frequently. Its a good animation app for ipad. But it is either subscription based or one time purchase with 60$
in my opinion, procreate dreams is better itself, i am also a procreate dreams user, but the animators who use toonsquid are better at animating since half of the procreate dreams users abuse keyframes
The one thing that I don't think you mentioned was the performance feature that Procreate has which ToonSquid does not. I think it's a really big feature to have and not only that but you can go back and edit those motions if you're not happy or just try it again. The other thing that I would say that Procreate does well is make it easy to use. I'm pretty much a newbie with art and animation and I found ToonSquid awesome to look at but I really had trouble trying to figure it out. The symbol library was great, but I constantly had problems with it and found it really hard to use. When I did lip syncing with it, I had to redo the symbols many times just because I couldn't get it to work the way I wanted. With Procreate, I was able to figure out a lot just by playing with features. I really like both software apps and I am giving both a good thumbs up. I would love to see some of the features of ToonSquid in Procreate (like the vectors and symbols) as I find it easier to work in Procreate. I also really love the camera function in ToonSquid. I'm not sure if you can edit cameras with Procreate yet. Maybe you can, but I haven't found that feature yet.
Thanks for your reply. Procreate Dreams will become a better app in the future. There is no camera in Dreams, but i am sure they will add new features in the future. They both approach the app in a different way. I like Dreams a lot and it has some great functions. They both have a learning curve. The same happened with drawing apps. I tried most of them, but I stuck with Procreate for the intuitive user experience. I am sure Dreams will be my animation app in the long run.
WOW Toonsquid is really the best animation app thus far. Kinda shows what marketing really does for ur product. Still amazing what 1 man can create. I will continue to back that. Also sad that a team of ppl couldn't beat a one man operation. Dreams UI and navigation is really cool tho. Maybe using both apps is the plan bc of composting if you have dreams already but I'm waiting to buy it still so ToonSquid only for me. Kinda want a toonsquid shirt now
I did not regret buying ToonSquid. I actually bought ToonSquid because waiting for procreate dreams to release was such a nightmare (around September 2023). I was so excited for procreate dreams that when it was released, I haven't made a single one animation in it and used ToonSquid instead because it is so powerful. I will keep using both, and the more both apps develop in the long run, the better for all of us. Callipeg, reduce your pricing pls. Thank you.
@@phy6geniuxYTcreations hahahah this reply is funny. Very true tho about callipeg. I will not do a subscription to a mediocre animation app. I want to try out dreams but waiting for some features first. Toonsquid only for me right now. It does everything animate does.
@@solrax6026 I'm actually happy with Toonsquid. You're correct, it does everything what I want it to be. Also, it is very intuitive to use. I was able to discover its features and controls by just playing with it. I hope the developer keeps on developing it.
@@phy6geniuxYTcreations yeah he better keep on developing it. Think we need more ppl putting up animations done in toonsquid. Think I'm going to work on some myself.
Great side by side comparison review Stayf! Using the two apps myself, I agree that the Dreams release was probably a bit too soon. At this point I think ToonSquid is the clear frontrunner. The hype Savage generated I think might have also backfired a little bit. Expectations were pretty high. The Performance feature is cool and it's going to win some people over to their camp but to me the app as it currently sits is not fully baked. All in, both apps can fit into my workflow depending on the type of project but at this point I am somewhat disappointed with the Dreams rollout. I'm sure that will change though as it matures and gets more developed. Exciting times ahead for animation on the iPad for sure!
It feels kinda scummy that their taglines about Dreams are all about how revolutionary and game-changing it is and the final product are so shoddy with basic features missing that may get added in the following years…Make me feels like I just got scammed.
@@jennyfong6851 Same, I was like “Wow, this is gonna be the best animation app ever!” Nope. It’s not. I feel like I wasted 20 bucks, if only I had considered looking into another animation app, like ToonSquid. The thing is, there was so much hype and it sounded super cool, and I loved normal Procreate so I assumed this was gonna be just as good, but there isn’t even a lasso tool…
I strongly agree with what you mentioned in your video. I also believe that PD's development team did not conduct enough surveys in the community. Their closed development process has led to the current situation.
Toonsquid and Rough Animator are the two best animation apps for the iPad that are available. Rough Animator is just plain fun to use! If either get that performance mode of Dreams, they will dominate the market.
I used RA from 2017-2023, but TS is a huge upgrade IMO. I use a 2017 ipad pro, and thought I needed to buy a new ipad because RA would freeze and crash with complex operations / imports / layer merging, yet TS does it all smooth and quickly even with multple video layers. I only miss the fill tool (behind+blur options) and way looping worked in RA, but the keyframing options in TS are incredibly useful and overall speed up my workflow several times over.
Wow looks like a first round knockout, not even close, at least right now. I’m sure Savage will keep working on Dreams, but ToonSquid should be rewarded in the market for making such a good product.
As someone who bought Dreams, I hate to say it but it looks like Toonsquid is ahead. I’m kinda disappointed with Dreams at the moment, so much so, I’m tempted to buy Toonsquid, whilst keeping an eye on Dreams updates.
Long time animator here, moved to an iPad workflow about 2 years ago, using Callipeg, procreate, and for anything needing rigging, Moho Pro (running on a desktop machine but brought to my iPad via Astropad Studio - works great!) I bought Dreams last week; pretty disappointing given all that’s missing. BUT I’d completely missed toonsquid over the past year and after trying it out a few days ago I’m sold on it. No doubt Dreams will be a contender but I also feel they released it too early. Toonsquid is the bomb at this point.
7:33 , Regarding Distortion and Warp, you can warp and distort videos and shapes in Toonsquid, both options are available in the transform menu. Another thing PD is missing from TS is the Keyboard shorcuts, pretty handy tbh.
You can actually import a video from your camera roll into Toonsquid! Just tap the plus button in the timeline, select image > import from photos, and then you can choose a video. It just wasn't labelled properly lol
wow i didnt event know about toonsquid.. now i just cant understand how a group of developers did a much much worse product compared to toonsquid. i think i will buy toonsquid if dreams keeps the current state which is very raw
One thing I'd like to add when it comes to importing movies - ToonSquid respects the alpha channels of movies, Procreate Dreams does not. This can be specifically annoying as it means you can't use movies as masks as Procreate masks work on alpha, not B&W.
this is the straight to the point comparison that I really wanted. no chit chat and unimportant information. just features difference between apps. Thank you sirr
The true only benefit I can see for Dreams right now is keyframing the effects, which I don't remember seeing ToonSquid have, explained here. Thank you so much for this work! I will be trying out ToonSquid soon because of it.
I had a similar experience. I specifically waited for Dreams to release because I wanted to just buy one ipad app for animation or so I thought and admittedly Dreams sounded so good. After trying it out for a day I had a bit of buyers remorse and went back to the app store and picked up ToonSquid. So far ToonSquid is ticking all of the boxes for me. To be fair its early days for Dreams still, and having purchased it I will keep up with it and use it occasionally but the hype clearly did not live up to reality, at least for me anyway. Others I'm sure may disagree.
I check all the updates that are coming. But this video is about what this version is like at the moment. I am positive Savage Interactive will make it a great app. We just have to hang in there and give them feedback.
Thank you kindly for taking the time to do this. I have both so that I can glean from each one. I use Procreate and Clip Studio too so I have many irons in the fire, but I like taking what helps from each program.
How do you fix this problem I have. So a lot of times. When I draw it shows from the start and I have to cut it to the right amount of frames. Even when I choose to ad drawing on the timeline. I also missed around with the magnetic tool. And I can’t figure out why it’s doing what I want and 90% of times I keep on having to edit. Also it’s making new timelines layers.
@@StayfDraws sorry I thought I said. I’m working in ToonSquid. I miss mine storyboard pro. But mine Wacom broke. This program seems like the closest thing to it. I love how you can add different layers for each jeyfram so it’s easier for me to do a animation with color because how I draw or trace I can’t use a paint bucket.
you need to add drawing and then tap inside that drawing you made, toonsquid automatically adds your drawing to the start unless you select a specific drawing, same fo layers, if you don't select one, it will go to the first layer by default.
the layes is probably bc you are using layers with different brushes or effects, like one layer has a different oppacity or effect, or if you switch from pixel to vector brushes, it will create a new layer depending on what you use, you cannot have two objects with different properties in the same layer.
Im new to the ipad market,, which app can use bone animation i needed for game dev, i wanna draw on procreate, animate on whatever app has bone animation and then use all of that in my pc game engine
It used to be a buy once app - now subscription or one time purchase - but Calipeg is SUPER feature filled. I do love Toonsquid for a VERY competent budget option. Not completely sold on Procreates animation tools/workflow. Nice to have options though.
I have both callipeg and ToonSquid and although I enjoy callipeg, ToonSquid definitely takes the cake feature-wise. It has so much options than callipeg. Both apps are good but for a once off payment, ToonSquid is a much better option no doubt@@realdreamfootage
I tried Callipeg for a year. Yes, they have tons of features, but I made more in toonsquid than in Callipeg. It is like riding a bicycle (toonsquid) vs. piloting an airplane (callipeg).
I would go with toonsquid. Its UI is very similar to the UI in provreate. I tested both and toonsquid was the winner for me. And its half of the price.
Why wait? It’s not like we, the artists, will benefit from NOT tinkering and working on our craft. So what if neither app is perfect? They both do great things that aren’t as easy with traditional paper or cells.
Symbols* Alone sets Toonsquid far apart. These other ipad apps really need to get with the times. No one wants to spend years frame by frame drawing. Make the animators life easy lol
@@Remi10pm i don't remember what symbol do in toonsquid but you can do twineing in dreams . So no need for frame by frame. You need only draw a charakter either a whole charakter or body parts seperate one time and then you can make them move etc with twineing. Only in deams its called keyframes and also another way performance. So 2 options wich are not frame by frame.
What power? Have you actually done any animation work? Lol I swear people just be saying anything. It has potential but it has a FARRRRR Way to go to be even half of toonsquid
@@kevinhouse7143 Integration with procreate for starters. Draw a picture in procreate and bring it to dreams and convert the layers into tracks. How about that? Too fast for your brain?
For me procreate dreams is revolutionary the time line changes everything instead in Toonsquid it is rigid and classic in approach. The immediacy of procreate dreams is on other levels of excellence ditto the feel of the design equal to procreate in toonsqui nn you have the same quality. Also using frames in procreate dreams is more immediate and the rendering lake fluidity never seen before. True Toonsquid has more tools but since procreate Dreams can be used in combo with procreate immediately it becomes a workspace unsurpassed and better than any on the market for digital art in any form.
@@originalauthor No because together procreate dreams and procreate used side by side is the ultimate workspace for digital art and animation nn there is no better
@@originalauthor The workflow between the two apps is continuous as if it were one ....toonsquid does not have this advantage as much as anyone. Also, importing videos into procreate dreams is moooo much faster and more convenient, not to mention the simply revolutionary timeline that allows you to work accurately and quickly
Ultimate? Honey. No. Disney, ghibli, other animation studios use these three programs for animating that are light years ahead of either toonsquid or procreate dreams. Opentoonz (ghibli mostly and they use clip studio for vector line work and opentoonz is free). Toonboom (has everything you can think of for the highest version but it is pricey). This IS the GOAT if you van afford it and get clip studio for vector lines. Digicel flipbook (disney for princess and the frog). Similar pricing as toonboom. 20 bucks for the lightest version. Expensive for im the pro who knows how to animate and use every software trick in the book. The only thing is these are not on ipad. Toonsquid and Dreams are both trying their best but they got eons to go to even compare. A pro animator will use the ipad for light short side projects but they know they can do it faster and with more features using a computer, humongo drawing display and their more powerful pc only programs.
