PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR - EPISODE 73
"We're Off to See the Wizard"
Become a patron at / prodigybowlerstour
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today, bowlers in both a HANDICAP division and a SCRATCH division decide two championships for the week.
First, you'll meet a newbie in the HANDICAP division, taking on a youngster who you just met for the first time a couple of weeks ago on PROIDGY. The newbie isn't just new to PRODIGY; he's new to BOWLING, having just started bowling about a month ago.
Then, it's a full four-match, five-player stepladder to decide things in the SCRATCH division.
Today's show includes a special feature, "LETTERS FROM PRODIGY U" featuring PRODIGY alum MELISSA McCONNELL, who gives you some insight into what it's like to be a collegiate bowler. Melissa is the team captain for the Lady Eagles at Oklahoma Christian University, which just launched its bowling program this season. So Melissa is their very first lady's team captain! If you're considering going to a college on a bowling scholarship or just want to bowl on a college bowling team, the feature is must-see TV, as Melissa gives you a lot of good information.
Plus, the competition on this week's show is fierce, and there are some great teaching moments, both for the players themselves and those of you watching who might suffer from similar problems with your game.
As always, your play by play announcer is Coach Randy Brown, a USBC Silver Certified Coach and former PBA member. Randy is also the Creator and Executive Producer of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR.
Your comments are welcome, but we simply ask that if you have a criticism of one of our bowlers, please keep it positive. Remember, our mission on PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to "Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers." So as long as your comments are helpful, not hurtful, it'll all be good.
Thanks for watching. If you'd like to support PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR, please visit us at / prodigybowlerstour and learn how you can become a patron of the show. It's easy and inexpensive, and you'll be helping the show's producer keep investing his time in the production of the show each week.
Finally, if you like what you see, give the video a THUMBS UP. And if you want to receive notifications each time we post a new video, click the SUBSCRIBE button. And if you really, really like what you see, please, by all means, share this video (and our other videos) with your friends on social media. The more people that see the show, the faster we can grow the audience.
Thanks again for watching PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR.
Enjoy the show!

What could be very interesting Randy is if you did live commentary. Get a microphone adapter to your camera or record the audio on your PC and you could do it at a back table where the camera is during the matches. It would definitely have much more suspense and would be more fun for you. It would also cause for less editing time. There have been a few times on Prodigy where I was wary about what was coming next but I found out in your voice because I heard the expression in your voice of already knowing the outcome. It could be a really fun opportunity.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
That will never happen. First, it would deprive me of the opportunity to go back in and fix the mistakes I make when doing play-by-play (believe me, I make a ton of them every week...which you never hear because I go back in and fix them). Or when I think of something clever to say that didn't occur to me while doing it the first time. When it's done in post-production, I have the luxury of going back in and making the change...seamlessly. But more importantly, it's just not practical. By recording the play-by-play after the fact, I am able to do it in a controlled environment where the sound is right and I'm able to use studio-quality microphones and equipment. (And I ain't takin' this microphone out of my studio to the bowling alley. It's what I make a living with.) I don't have a portable computer to take with me, and anything I could record VO with on a cellphone is going to sound like crap. Plus, I'm actually RUNNING the EVENT we're filming. I don't have time to sit down in the corner and do play-by-play. I've got other things I'm doing. You only THINK I gave you a clue about what was coming up. Remember, I've been a professional voice actor for 40+ years. If I hinted at something coming, it was only because I want you to think something was coming. Or you're psychic. And believe me, doing the play-by-play at the event would not reduce the editing time much. I spent about 3-4 hours a week on play-by-play. Otherwise, I spent about 30-40 hours producing the show. The play-by-play is just a small part of that. I'd rather do it RIGHT than take any shortcuts to getting it done a little quicker. Not my style to take shortcuts.

I just watched the latest episode and was dismayed at the actions of Logan. If his parents don't take him to task for his behavior, somebody should. He is not 6 years old and his temper tantrums are not cute. Everybody has bad days at the lanes, but few throw things. Tell him to grow up, and act his age.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
I think it's a safe bet that a couple of the kids on this show were playing to the camera just a bit. While it's true that Big Logan tends to blow his stack a bit too easy when carry doesn't go his way, some of his antics you see here seem to me to have been a bit amplified for the benefit of our viewing audience. I can't recall seeing him ever pull the same hijinks during league when the cameras aren't rolling. Just sayin'.

My bowling coach for high school seemed to have a misunderstanding when the ball doesn’t seem to hit the pocket. He suggest to moves left but I’m pretty sure your suppose to move right because it has dryer boards so it hooks more. Who is correct
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Generally speaking, if the ball is not getting up to the pocket, you'd want to move right. There are exceptions, of course. For instance, if you're bowling on Shark (or some similar pattern) where the outside of the lane is flooded, you might find it better to move left and move your target at the arrows left, too.

Hi Coach Randy, I saw in the other comments that you said you think two-handing it is the better way to bowl. As a two-hander myself I’d really like to hear why you think that is. Thanks!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Well, it's pretty simple, really. First, you can get more on the ball quite easily. Second, it eliminates any concern at all about whether a player's thumbhole fits correctly. Those two things alone, I believe, make it a superior method. That said, like with all things in sports, there are trade-offs. Generally speaking, I think one-handers tend to be more accurate. And accuracy is important, especially in spare shooting. Which is why you rarely see two-handers among the leaders in spare conversion percentage. Furthermore, there are some oil patterns (short oil, especially) that can give high rev players fits. On the flip side, long oil can give lower rev players great difficulty while hi rev players can eat it up. So like I said, there are trade-offs. But accuracy is the biggest one with two-handed. Which is what makes Belmo such a freak of nature. He has both power AND accuracy (as evidenced by the number of crazy splits he's made on TV).

We're seeing more and more two-handers. And we've got some little ones who have been bowling one-handed who are converting to two-handed. Quite candidly, if I had a son or daughter who was junior league age today, I think I'd steer them toward two-handed. I think it's a better way to bowl.

Hey Coach Randy. Out of curiosity, why is the camera usually not even with the lanes?? This episode, and I believe some of these last few episodes, the camera was always placed at an angle towards the left lane. Just preference for recording ,or is it thing involving the bowling alley or editing?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Well, there's a variety of factors in play. For starters, the "signature" look of PRODIGY, where the camera is positioned right between the two lanes, is what we usually try to achieve. But it's not always possible. That's because of the way the furniture is laid out in the settee areas of the lanes at BZ Roswell. The table and chairs are staggered, with the table and chairs on the even numbered lanes sitting closer to the lanes, and the table/chairs on the odd numbers lanes sitting further back, closer to the concourse area. Because of this configuration, and where the counters are arranged and where the openings are allowing you to enter/exit to and from the settee area, our camera platform, which requires about a 4' x 4' space to stand (the camera stands on top of it) can't get into tight spaces. So on certain pairs of lanes, we can get right between the two lanes, but on certain other pairs of lanes, we cannot -- we have to move to one side or the other. Most bowling shows on TV are shot from behind the right shoulder of the bowler, or somewhat farther off to the right. never are they shot from the left. (It would just look weird because we're not used to seeing that angle. And since only about 10% of us are left-handed, it would feel weird to about 90% of us.) So, while I would prefer to shoot the show from right between the two lanes, there are some pairs of lanes in this house where that's just not possible. The camera's platform is too big to fit into the small space where that angle would be achievable. Honestly, I've grown rather fond of shooting from directly behind the right lane so that we have a more angular view of the left lane. It gives us two distinctly different angles, which comes in handy on some shots, like the split screen (usually performed on the left lane) and the "3 up" and "3 DEEP" shot (usually performed on the right lane when we're right behind it). If you get the idea that more thought goes into this than you might have imagined, you might be right.

I watch all of your videos and enjoy them very much. Kids and adults alike have tempers and some people truly wear their emotions on their sleeves. However, damage to center property has to be a disqualifying action. I truly was disappointed to see Logan not even get a verbal warning at 1:16:41. I ran a center for 22 years and he would've been done for the day if he punched or kicked any part of my bldg.

I absolutely let him know verbally at the bowling center that his kicking the ball return was not acceptable. As for his punching the wall that hangs down from above where the Telescore screens used to be projected years ago, I rather imagine his knuckle will give way long before the wall does.

PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is a weekly made-for-RU-vid "TV" series. It is a series of Unofficial, Informal and Impromptu After League Challenge Matches" held between members of our youth bowling program at Brunswick Zone Roswell and anyone else who wants to come bowl with us. Coach Randy Brown (that's me) is the Youth Director at BZ Roswell and is the Creator and Executive Producer of the show. He's been in broadcast media since 1969 and is enshrined in the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. You can be a part of it by showing up some Saturday at around 12:30 PM and bowling. If you intend to travel across town, across the state, or from somewhere farther, I strongly recommend you join our Facebook group (yes, it's called PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR) and get with Coach Randy so you can coordinate your travels to ensure that you'll come on a day when we're taping and when visitors are welcome. (Some weeks we stage events that are open only to our league bowlers.) We're off the next two weeks. Our next taping will be 10/27 when we'll hold the 2018 edition of our Halloween Spooktacular. To see what might be in store, I recommend you watch last year's Halloween show. It was kinda crazy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kf6zycR3HM0.html

Immediately, if I know one takeaway from this episode, you have to control your emotions, no matter if it's league, tournament, or open play. I know I'm taking a risk when I say this, but Logan really scared me during that rivalry with Christian. I thought he might break something or hit someone after a bad shot. Personally, I'd recommend that Logan not only control his emotions, but his ball speed, too. He appears to be sending the ball out of bounds, causing his ball to hit the pocket light. The slower, the better.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
For the most part, yes. There have been a few episodes that included some grown-ups bowling. Most notably, our 2017-18 season ending "Adult/Youth Scotch Doubles 9-Pin No-Tap" event, which paired adults with youth bowlers in a doubles event. One year earlier, the same event produced the series' only 300 game (albeit a no-tap 300). And a smattering of other events have included adults, as well, such as some of the Single and Double Ball Elimination-style events. The most recent of those, the Double Ball Elimination with Redemption Frames, included three of our coaches, including Coach John Perozzi, Coach Gene Elston and myself, Coach Randy Brown.

Is this center known for alot of 10 pins because it sure leaves alot of 10s?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
All centers are known for a lot of 10 pins. It is the most common leave in all of bowling. That said, I can tell you that one of the former general managers of the center, who was there for many years and is, himself, quite a bowler, once informed me that the gutter depths at Brunswick Zone Roswell were built to maximum allowable specifications. In other words, when all bowling centers are built, they can set the depths of the gutters near the pin decks, and those depths must fall within a range to meet USBC legal specifications. The gutters at Roswell are set to the maximum allowable depth. Knowing that, it's a fair assumption that pins won't kick out quite as easily as they might at houses where the gutters are slightly more shallow. It means you'll leave more 10 pins. Also, to my knowledge, BZ Roswell has never replaced its kickbacks (the sideboards) with the more lively ones that are available as aftermarket products. Some centers like to install them to get pins flying off the walls much more easily. The net result is that carry at Roswell is far from great. But the good news for bowlers there is, they earn what they get...and when the go bowl elsewhere, they'll find the carry much better in many instances. If you can strike at Roswell, you can strike anywhere.
@jayvallandingham2406
@jayvallandingham2406 6 лет назад
Every center is known 10 pins! There's a fine line between a strike and a 10 pin. ALL 10 pins leaves are a result of ball deflection. Bowlers have a tendency to fear splits and will throw caution to the right meaning too much 3 pin and not enough 1 pin. A 10 pin leave is a bad shot technically speaking because the bowling ball is long down lane and comes in behind the head pin. As a bowler looking down lane is an optical illusion because of the distance from one pin to the next. The pins are spaced a foot apart. Leaving plenty of room for the bowling ball and pins to miss each other. More 300 games are ruined because the bowler has a tendency to throw the ball a bit fast at one point leaving a dreaded 10 pin;-) Want to get good at bowling? Keep it simple and make your 10 pins. 19 of 20 is a goal for you to strive for. Remember bowling is a lifetime game so you have plenty of time to get better at it;-)
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
I agree with most everything you say EXCEPT that the 10 pin leave results from the ball finishing too far "behind" the 1 pin. That's not always so. But it is always a result of the angle at which the 3 pin contacts the 6. This is almost always the result of entry angle, but not always the result of the SAME entry angle. I've seen the ball go far down the lane, then hook late and leave a 10, and other times I've seen the ball come in at a very shallow entry angle (including a "fallback" shot) and hang a ring 10. (Saw one last night when one of our PRODIGY kids was working on the front 9.) Bottom line: If you're right-handed, you'll leave more 10 pins in your lifetime than any other spare there is, regardless of whether you're bowling at a center known for 10 pins or not. So you better know how to make 'em. (Christian, are you listening?)

If I don’t grip my hand breaks and a lot of pressure is put on the top of my thumb. 2. If the thumb hole is suppose to be tight enough for you not to squeeze the ball how do you easily get it out during the release? 3. Is there a way to get used to pulling my thumb out earlier at home? Thanks

1. You keep your elbow in tight to your side and make sure the ball is drilled properly for your hand. 2. By keeping you thumb relaxed. 3. You don't pull it out. It comes out. If a ball is properly fitted and drilled, and if you dont' squeeze it, the ball will hang on to you, not the other way around. The thumb is not in there to HOLD the ball. It's in there to GUIDE it. Keep that thumb super relaxed. Resist the temptation to squeeze or pinch even a little. When I put my thumb in the ball, I actually feel like I'm pushing the BACK of my thumb against the BACK wall of the thumbhole before I ever take a step. The ball will grab on to you. Then, if it's drilled right and you're not squeezing, it will fly off your thumb right when it's supposed to.

BrownswickBowling so if I can get a bowling ball fitted for my hand that works just as good as the urethane ball I've been bowling with that is a little big for my hands, btw I just started 10 pin bowling this season and my average is 139

I'm still having trouble so hopefully you can answer a few more questions. How do I know if my ball is drilled properly? I just went bowling today and I relaxed my thumb properly, I think. I am having a lot of problems though. First, my ball is already falling off my thumb and hangs on by my thumb knuckle and there is a lot of pressure. The sides of my thumbs hurts, the back of my thumb is really really red, and the pad of my thumb seems to be bleeding on the inside. Second, when I go to release the ball, my thumb doesn't come out like it's suppose to. It hangs on with me until I physically and consciously pull my thumb out so I don't get thrown down the lane. Third, when I go to release the ball, my ball doesn't roll of my fingers. Rather, I feel like I am throwing it and I can't get proper rotation on my ball. I throw a Storm Intense on the house shot where my left foot starts 2 boards right of the middle dot and throw it to around the 8-10 board. However, the ball usually doesn't get up and misses the head pin entirely.

Ash Ketchum if your missing the head pin but hitting your mark move your feet, if you miss left move left miss right move right

BrownswickBowling Sorry two more things. One, I was just told I’m suppose to grip with my thumb on my down swing and relax at my release point. Is that true? Two, how do your junior bowlers like Charlie and Logan rev their balls? When I relax my thumb and let the ball come off my hand, it only spins 2-4 times before the break point and I throw a fairly slow ball

Hey guys, I’m a pretty new bowler and I’m looking to get a strike ball, thats good all around (prefer ebonite brand to match my ebonite maxim) I’ve been bowling with the maxim, and I’m practicing hooking it, but it wont hook, my rpm is around 250-300 I was thinking of the ebonite choice, but I’d rather have professional opinions, Thanks!

InspiringRex I would get the Ebonite matrix solid, but if you want more variety look into Hammer, Columbia 300 and Track because all those brands go together.

Randy, do you commentate at the bowling alley or after recording is finished?

The play-by-play is the very last thing I do to the video. The camera stands there, unattended, during taping of the show, in what we in the TV business call "a lock-down shot." (The camera is locked down and doesn't move during the filming of the show.) I then bring the footage into my computer and add all the virtual camera moves, layer the graphics on top (scoring, etc.), add the music and sequence all the other parts. I also voice the parts at the beginning of the show and the parts coming out of commercial breaks as I'm editing the show. Then, the very last thing I do to the edit is add the play-by-play. I've already seen the show live, and I've already sat there and edited the video, so I'm already quite familiar with what's coming. But as I watch the playback on one computer, I record the play-by-play on another computer, then bring the audio file in and sync it up in Final Cut Pro. I try to sound surprised when I call the action, as if I'm seeing it for the first time, so as not to spoil the surprise. Perhaps the biggest advantage of doing PxP after the fact like this is that it gives me the option to go back in and fix mistakes I make. I don't fix 'em all. But the bigs ones, I do. (And heaven knows, there's plenty of them. LOL!)

Rowan should look into a urethane for the better angle into the pocket and carry. He is consistent enough with his shots
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Agreed. He now has a reactive. May be a bit strong for most conditions. But on long or heavy oil, it might come in handy. But you're right. Maybe a Pitch Black or one of the Hammer Urethanes would be just about right for him on most conditions.

Another bowler that I haven't seen yet this season is Josh. Did he age out or is he just getting ready for tournaments
@ProdigyBowlersTour

He hasn't technically aged out of junior bowling, as he's still U20 this season. But he did age out of high school, and is now off at college. That's why you haven't seen him.
