------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the second year in a row, we celebrate Halloween with an especialy frightful game Coach Randy has dreamed up that is sure to strike fear into the hearts of bowlers everywhere. The game is called "Trick Or Treat -- As Easy As 1-2-3." Here's how it works:
Players will collect "treats" that will be held in their bank in case they need to spend them to buy their way out of trouble. Treats are collected whenever there's a color pin standing in the 1, 2 or 3 pin position and they strike. You collect as many treats as you have color pins standing in the 1, 2 or 3 pin positions when you strike. BUT...if you leave a 1, 2 or 3 pin standing after your second ball in the frame, you are instantly eliminated, regardless of how many treats you have collected along the way. But if you suffer an open frame and leave a color pin standing in any other spot besides the 1, 2 or 3 pin positions, you may continue your game as long as you have enough treats to purchase the remaining color pins. If, for example, you leave two color pins standing at the end of the frame and have 2 treats banked, you may spend those two treats, emptying out your bank, to stay in the match. But if you leave 2 color pins standing and only have one treat in your bank, then you don't have enough treats to buy your way out of trouble and you must suffer instant elimination. Players start each match with 1 treat in their bank. And each player may take up to 2 re-racks per game. We encourage them to use those re-racks wisely.
Two divisions today: The show begins with our top two "Littles" squaring off for the title. Then, it's a unique six-player stepladder in the "Bigs" Division, with two three-player matches followed by a two-player, head-to-head match to decide this week's title.
If you watched our Halloween show last year, you'll notice three changes to the rules this year. The color pins all work the same, except last year the players didn't get a treat to start. They also didn't get any re-racks last year. These two changes alone give players some new strategic options. And finally, last year we only bowleld 2--player matches, while this year in the Bigs, we pit three players against one another in the first two matches, making it at least somewhat more certain that most matches will go to the end.
As always, your comments are welcome. We only ask that you keep any remarks you wish to make about our players positive. Remember, PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR's mission is to "Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers." So if you have a critique, please be helpful, not hurtful. The kids aren't the only ones who read these comments; their parents do, too. (And so do I.)
The Creator, Executive Producer and Play-by-Play monkey are all one in the same -- USBC Silver Certified Coach Randy Brown.

BrownswickBowling did Melissa send the selfie of her and I to you? It was one of the coolest things to ever happen in life and I’m going to remember it forever. I’m so glad that you started this randy you the best!!

She sent a selfie of herself and a fan, but (and I hate to say this because I don't want to make her look bad), but she couldn't remember his name. I'm guessing it was you? Anyway, since I didn't have a name to associate with the picture, I didn't share it on PRODIGY. But I surely do appreciate you stepping forward and for being a fan of the show. It's because of fans like you that doing this show is so amazingly gratifying for yours truly. :-)

Love your work. Keep up the great work, I've been bowling since 3rd grade and did high school bowling nickname was DOZER lol. I'm 20 now bowling on mens league here in Cynthiana ky. Just wish we had something like this when i was younger.

Thanks for the kind words. Sorry there wasn't something like this when you were bowling youth league. Fact is, there's nothing quite like this anywhere else. And it's kind of an accidental perfect storm of circumstances that enables it to exist here. So enjoy it.

I learned from the last prodigy I was on and reading all the comments about how mad I get sometimes and throwing the hat and watching myself doing it I thought this really isn’t professional. So I took all the criticism from last prodigy and I turned into a turning point for my career. I just wanted to apologize for what I have done in the past and now I’m focusing on the future.

The thing that most people don't know about Big is that he's just a big teddy bear. He and Christian Mennell came to my rescue this Summer and helped me move. I know how kind and funny both of them are. What Big Logan had to learn was that the temper outbursts dont' help him, they actually keep him from bowling as well as he can. Moreover, when a ball you think should have been a strike doesn't strike (which is usually the impetus that gets Big Logan so mad), there's always a reason for it. I mean, it's not like the pins are just spiting you. LOL. The more you understand pin action, the less likely you'll be to fly off the handle when a seemingly good hit doesn't yield a strike. Of course when they all go down more often than not, it helps lift your mood, as it did here.

Coach Randy, this 74th episode is by far the best one you ever developed and the suspense was unbelievable. I honestly believe that this match beats out any PBA match I can recall. Maybe it was the 'play-by-play' that made it so great!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
Yeah, that's what it was. The play-by-play monkey was at his best. No, actually, as I watch this back, and as I watch all the PRODIGY episodes back, I can think of a dozen things or more I'd have done differently with the play-by-play if I had it to do over. For instance, after the Sandy incident as I was recapping all that went on before the player was about to resume play, I forgot all about the fact that the delay and suspense began with him taking his second and final re-rack. But boy, the way those final dozen or so shots played out, we couldn't have asked for more drama and suspence. I've said it before: I don't root for any one player (if I do, I'm rooting for whoever's behind to make it close). I just root for a photo finish. And this one couldn't have been much closer.

I can't even begin to describe how horrible I felt when the ending of the match you're referring to happened and when I saw the runner-up crying his eyes out over how it played out. I just didn't want to see it end that way, and I really wanted (I think our viewers wanted) to see these two battle it out. But there will be other opportunities. I went over, gave him a big hug and let him know that it was the nature of this quirky format, and that he didn't do anything wrong. He's a great kid, has very loving and supporting parents, and I'm just glad he didn't stay sad for long. He will be back. This kid shows all signs of being on track to be a very special talent.

I see Faith has been working on her release. She's getting much more axis rotation now
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
She's making progress. I've worked with her, and she has another coach in middle Georgia familiar to many youth bowlers in the state, Walt Alexander. (He's very good.) The thing I'd most like to see Faith work on now is getting the ball into a SWING. She looks to me like she's PLACING the ball into the swing and never actually SWINGS it (like a pendulum). If she did, she'd generate a LOT more ball speed. And she needs more speed. I told her last night when I saw her bowling her Tuesday night league that I'm pretty sure that even I could beat her ball to the pins just walking briskly down there.

You know, to look at the pattern sheet for Dead Man's Curve, it doesn't look all that difficult. And the ratio would suggest that it's not as difficult as several other sport shots we've laid out for you on PRODIGY. But last year's Trick or Treat and this year's Trick or Treat have proven one thing to me: this pattern gives players fits. There wasn't a single 200 game bowled in qualifying, and Rowan's 361 was the highest two-game total bowled in qualifying. That one of the Littles had the high qualifying score, eclipsing even all the Bigs, tells me this pattern did exactly what I'd hoped: it bewildered most of our players.

This is one of my favorite events of all time. This format should be used more often more than Halloween
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
I love this format. Yes, it's quirky and weird. But it's Halloween, so I see that as a feature, not a bug. Besides, it serves a very useful purpose in coaching terms: it really forces the player to think and to make strategic decisions. And while those decisions may not have a direct correlation to ones they'd otherwise face in a straightforward bowling tournament, I'm a huge believer in teaching kids to be problem-solvers and to reason their way through the problem-solving process. Plus, this format has the added benefit of being a huge distraction for players who, ultimately, must remember there's a match they've gotta win while they're focusing so much of their attention on tricks, treats, color pins and whether they're about to be thrown in the dungeon. Besides, as a once-a-year diversion, I think it's terribly entertaining. I'm glad to know there's at least one other person who does, too.

It's one of my favorites, too. I have to give credit where it's due. I'm not the only one who dreamed it up. I had the basic concept in my mind, but it was only after I talked on the phone with Jeff Collins, Josh Collins' dad, that he and I together came up with all the little tricks and treats that made up the format. Then this year, I added a few wrinkles. After last year's show in which we had three matches end rather abruptly and early, I decided to give each player one treat to start the match and two re-racks they could use. Those enhancements, I think, make the game much more strategic and give players more to think about.

Luke S - Sandy. It’s always Sandy. Hahaha! He’s a super nice guy. Everybody likes him. But he’s not a bowler and knows almost nothing about bowling. I think even he would admit that. But fate has deemed him as the one who always seems to be in the middle of these bone-headed incidents. It wasn’t his fault, but he was also the one working the counter on 3/24/2018, better known to PRODIGYHEADS as “The Day the Lights Went Out in Georgia.” (Go back and watch that episode. It’s the one time I actually got so pissed I seriously considered quitting.)

A. I don't really take requests for oil patterns. We're somewhat limited in what patterns we can use by what patterns they already have programmed into the Kegel FLEX machine we have at Brunswick Zone Roswell. I would like to get them to be a bit more flexible in programming in patterns that aren't already in there. I'm not sure if there's nobody there who knows how to do it, or if they just don't seem to be that approachable about doing it. But we have enough patterns programmed in there to sustain a season of PRODIGY, so I'm okay with it. B. We've already held a PRODIGY event on a flat oil pattern. Last season's big climax, the PRODIGY Tournament of Champions (held at AMF Woodstock, where they're considerably more flexible about programming patterns in), we bowled on Red Square, a 40-foot 100% flat pattern. It was certainly one of the more interesting shows we've done. Also quite an interesting format: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bOyPDOCk7mw.html

What was with Annalise not making adjustments? Or if she was what was she trying to do?!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
Any response I, or anyone else (besides Annalise herself), gives you will be nothing more than pure speculation. We can't get into Annalise's head to know for sure what she was thinking. But I can tell you this: Annalise is one of the best-coached, most well-informed junior bowlers I've ever been around. So I have to assume there was something going on there that isn't obvious to the rest of us. I also know now (after having talked to someone who bowls league with her on Saturday mornings at the other bowling center) that she didn't have a particularly great morning in league. So here are a few possible explanations for what you see: 1. Maybe she just wasn't executing the way she wanted. Obviously, she saw something in qualifying and in warm-ups for the stepladder that informed her to play outside. Personally, I would have assumed that on a 43 foot pattern, the shot would have been a bit further inside. But maybe she tried in there and didn't like what she saw and moved out. I don't know. But maybe when she didn't execute the way she wanted, she reasoned that you can't adjust off of a bad shot and just stubbornly stayed where she was until throwing a shot she likes. Again, I'm just offering possible explanations. I didn't ask her why she didn't move. 2. Maybe she played inside earlier (like maybe in qualifying) and wasn't thrilled with what she found. Or maybe there was nowhere on the lane that was yielding a look she liked and figured she was better off playing by the gutter where she's have the area all to herself. Again, just speculating. The fact is, I don't know what he reasons were for staying out by the edge. But to assume the worst -- that she just didn't know to move -- ignores the fact that she is the Junior Gold National Champion. This is a kid who knows what she's doing. So I have to assume that she had her reasons and it just didn't work out for her. Let's remember that until Big Logan's 2nd game in the stepladder, nobody bowled all that well all day in this event, and even with the way she bowled in that one match on the show, she still got up in the 10th frame with a chance to double and win...but just didn't make the shot she wanted. So it's easy for you to second-guess. But I know her well enough to never assume that she just wasn't thinking. That's the one thing I know is not possible. Maybe she was over-thinking, or maybe she just got fooled by what she was seeing. Those are things that can happen to anybody, even the best players in the world. And maybe she just had an off day. Lord knows, that happens to all of us. But again, I will always assume that she's clear-headed and thinking her way through the challenge. That's who she is as a bowler. Things just didn't work out for her on this day quite the way she'd have liked. But to try to guess what she was thinking is just that -- a guess.

Hey Randy first off I love your channel and what you do with the kids. This is my favorite format you’ve done so far. Now I’m just getting back into bowling after a 13 year lay off. My last league average was a 183. My question is with all the new ball technology and brands. What ball would you recommend? I throw a very similar style to Walter Ray.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
I'm partial to Storm's line-up of balls. But they all make quality equipment. For high rev players, I think urethane might be a good choice. But to say what BALL (singular) is best is impossible to say. I don't know any good bowlers who only have one. Like, you wouldn't play golf with just one club. There are different clubs for different shots you have to hit. SImilarly in bowling, lane conditions are vastly different from one day to the next, from one house to another, and even from one game to the next. Having the right equipment in hour hand for the condition you're facing right now is essential to maximizing your scoring potential. Consult with your pro shop operator for the best advice. But personally, I prefer the Storm brand. Or Motiv. Or Brunswick. Or Hammer. Those are my top for. But it's more of a personal preference. Like I said, stick with the major brands and they all make quality equipment. That's not a hedge; it's just true.
@brentdonhauser
@brentdonhauser 5 лет назад
Thank you Randy, definitely understand what you mean by needing more than one ball. I’m gonna join a competitive league next fall that shots sport patters. So once I get to that point I’ll definitely need to get more equipment. But as of now I’ll just be bowling a house shot. I’ve always used reactive balls and switch to plastic on spares, hard and straight just like to you say:) I’ll definitely remember those brands when I go to the pro shop here.

Logan could slow that ball down a little and let it do its job a little better. I stopped trying to go thru the back of the lane by slowing the ball down and finally improved 20 pins on my avg. My son same thing. He improved 8 pins at least but he doesn't bowl in any leagues.
@jdracer111
@jdracer111 5 лет назад
Is this oil pattern correct or are they just all throwing bad shots. Ive never seen the kids bowl so bad before on Prodigy bowling. Annalise can't buy a strike. Faith throws the ball slower and lets it work on the backend.I love to watch the kids bowl. I didn't start bowling leagues until I was in my 40s. When I quit I was avging around 185.
@SirJoelsuf1
@SirJoelsuf1 5 лет назад
The pattern is correct. It's "more difficult" than most PBA patterns, which usually break down to a modified house shot. Dead Man's Curve isn't like that at all. If Logan was with other bowlers like him, he'd be lofting the cap...and MAYBE getting brookylns. Those kids did really well for what it's worth, I know people who average 200+ on house shots who barely break 500 in a set on shots like this.

BLM has the best physical game I've ever seen. He is also making great progress in the mental game, which is far more important. Just keep working on the straight spare ball. That tool is a necessity.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
Personally, I'd like to see him lower his backswing some. He doesn't need such a long swing. If anything, I think he could stand to slow his ball down a little. But we're talking about the kid here who was the only one in Georgia to record a sanctioned 300 game last season, and who bowled 836, the highest series of any youth bowler in the state last year. So he's obviously doing something right. I just think he could smooth out the highs and lows of his game if he moderated his physical game a little with a somewhat lower, and more controllable, backswing. Similar issue as the one I've worked with Christian on. But Logan is bigger, and can handle it a little better. Funny thing is, as far as I know, he's never really had a coach, per se. He's pretty much doing all that on his own. The biggest area of improvement he can make (and he's not alone in this -- I see it with all youth bowlers) is the mental game.
@wiphi245

Aw man! That last match was a thriller to watch (Funny how I say “Thriller” and it’s Halloween today)! By the way, do you have any tips on arm swing? I’ve been having issues where I bend my elbow too much on the backswing and I end up pulling my shot on the release, which kills my scores and average.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
Keep your elbow in tight to your torso on the downswing. If you're pulling shots, chances are your elbow (especially if it's bent) is getting away from your body -- the classic "chicken wing." Elbow in keeps your hand behind the ball. Elbow bounced out puts your hand on the right side of the ball, promoting a pull.
@wiphi245
@wiphi245 5 лет назад
That works! I’ve also been learning to fully extend my arm on the backswing and keep it extended for the whole duration of the swing, too! If most everyone that bowls can do it, so can I! Also, Sandy up to his nasty antics again! First, the “Crazy Dough” incident, now the sudden lane switch-off!

Not my proudest question as I have bowled for years now but I have heard you say “reactive ball” before. What exactly is a reactive ball? Would it be your average hook ball or your plastic ball?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
There are basically three types of balls sold today. Reactive resin balls are called that because they have a reactive resin additive in the urethane. When I say "reactive ball," that's just shorthand for "reactive resin." These balls come with dynamic weight blocks in the core of the ball, which helps steer them to the left (if you're right-handed). Then there are urethane balls. Reactive resin balls are made of urethane, too, but have the reactive resin additive. A straight urethane ball does not. Without that additive, a urethane ball is decidedly more tamed down in its motion on lane. Many high rev players prefer urethane because it's more controllable. But lower rev players would complain that urethane doesn't give them enough entry angle to be effective strike balls (except on certain conditions, like short oil). Plasic (or polyester) balls are usually reserved for spare balls as they tend not to hook much, if at all, on today's modern synthetic lanes. Back in the day (not that long ago, frankly), when we were bowling on WOOD lanes, urethane was the thing. And before that, plastic (polyester) was the thing that replaced RUBBER balls, which were the material of choice from the early 20th century up until about the 1970s. The earliest plastic balls came along and could be manufactured with various surface hardnesses, giving manufacturers the ability to offer more aggressive (higher hook potential) balls (like the Columbia 300 Yellow Dot) that had a softer cover, while the harder cover balls (like the C300 White or Blue Dot balls) that had a harder shell. Then in the early '80s, urethane was the rage. Reactive resin balls were introduced in the 1990s, and were a total game changer. Some would argue they ruined the game. But reactive resin was a reaction to bowling centers mostly converting from wood lanes to synthetic. The synthetic surfaces are much, much harder than wood lanes. At first when synthetic lanes were introduced, proprietors put less oil on the lanes than they do now, because they typically used less oil on wood lanes (which is why you could throw urethane or plastic and still get it to hook). But as they discovered the synthetic lanes needed more (and different types of) oil to protect them, ball manufacturers responded with these reactive resin balls so players could have something in their hands that would hook on just about anything. There are still a few houses around with wood lanes. Go try throwing a reactive resin ball on wood lanes. You might not be able to keep it on the lane. But a plastic or urethane ball may seem about right. But on today's harder synthetic lanes, plastic won't hook much at all. For some players, neither will urethane (most of us can get it to hook SOME), and reactive resin will hook on darn near anything with the possible exception of some higher volume, longer oil patterns (like Badger).

Travis Webster - She’s the Junior Gold National Champion. I’m sure she was aware. My guess is she wasn’t executing the way she wanted. And everybody knows better than to adjust off a poorly executed shot. I’ve since learned that she didn’t have a great day at league that morning across town either. Might have been it was just an off day, or maybe the distraction of the color pins, treats and tricks got her focus sidetracked. That’s part of the challenge here. I’m not sure what kept her from moving, but I’m certain she had her reasons for staying out there at the edge. I have a ton of confidence in her that she’ll learn from this and bounce back. She’s the best girl bowler in the state, and has been for a couple of years.

The season is young. He's stated on Instagram and elsewhere that he's not bowling PRODIGY this year. Maybe he'll stick with that decision. Maybe he won't. I've got a pretty good idea of why he's made that decision. I hope he'll reconsider. But if he doesn't, he doesn't. PRODIGY's DNA has Logan all through it, as it was he who originally was the kid who routinely stayed after league to bowl these challenge matches that eventually gave me the inspiration to film them (with their parents' permission, of course) and put them on RU-vid. But it's ultimately his decision. He's got a lot of fans here, and by refusing to bowl, he's only disappointing his own fans. PRODIGY will continue growing either way.

Though it does baffle me why she didn't move her feet a little left and belly the ball just slightly she seems like a very competent bowler looking at her game. Maybe just an off day.

1:12:27 Doesn't wiping the ball down like that just spread more oil on the ball? That's what I've been taught.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
You were taught wrong. Wipe that oil off. Every single time. It should be part of your pre-shot routine. Furthermore, if you dont' wipe the oil off your ball every time, it will seep into the microscopic pores on the surface of any reactive resin ball, and will, over time, reduce the ball's effectiveness and ability to hook.

Even if you do routinely wipe the oil off your ball, SOME oil is bound to seep into the pores of the ball. That's why every ball manufacturer reminds you to routinely give the ball's surface a touch-up after every bowling session, and to give it a good resurfacing after about 50 games. As for a deep cleaning (oven or hot water, depending on the brand of ball it is), it all depends on how much you bowl. But I do mine about twice a year if I'm bowling a lot.
@SirJoelsuf1
@SirJoelsuf1 5 лет назад
Right on, I'll wipe off the ball from now on and see if it makes a difference. You actually recommend cleaning the ball in an oven? I heard that makes it crack everywhere. I'm not calling you out or anything, just curious as to how that works. Keep in mind I bowled for Florida State, am an avid follower of Joe Slowinski, and am buddies with a smattering of regional pros so It's not like I've been coached by nobodies ;) Still, love the show, wish I had something like this around when I was young instead of being forced to bowl with adults when I was 6 :/
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
Let me be very clear here: I do NOT recommend just putting a bowling ball in a kitchen oven and baking it. No, no, no. Different ball manufacturers recommend different methods for deep cleaning their bowling balls. Storm recommends using hot water and Dawn dish soap. Brunswick says their equipment will crack if submerged in water and recommend the hot air method (baking). But when you bake a bowling ball, you should use a bowling ball oven (yes, such things exist, they're made for just this purpose). When using the hot water method, Storm recommends first taking the surface down to 360 or 500 abrasion before puttig it in hot, soapy water so the cover's pores will be opened up and the oil can rise to the surface. Putting a ball in a kitchen oven or even a dishwasher is not recommended because of how a portion of the ball can get too close to the heating element. And yes, it could cause it to crack. Bowling ball ovens that are made for deep cleaning bowling balls utilize an indirect heat method so no heating elements get that close. The heat is dispursed evenly throughout the oven. Most pro shops have one. Some have both a bowling ball oven and a device where they can submerge a ball into hot soapy water. Personally, I do it in buckets in my tub with hot tap water. The hot soapy water method I describe is exactly what the Storm people in Utah gave me.

Marc (with a "C") didn't return to bowl league with us again this year. He lives clear on the other side of town. He and his family made about a 75 mile drive, one way, to bowl with us last year. I know they weren't thrilled with the bowling center where Marc had been bowling league before, which is why they sought us out. But I think they found something a good bit closer that they liked over on that side of town. Hopefully we'll see Marc every now and then. I've spoken to his dad and he says they think of us often, and haven't ruled out the possibility of bringing Marc up to bowl PRODIGY with us occasionally. So you may not have seen the last of him. :-)

Phil Mickelson is naturally right-handed but learned to play golf by watching his right-handed father swing a golf club while little Phil would stand in front of him and mirror his dad's motion. Hence, he learned to play left-handed. Anybody think he should convert to right-handed? He's only one of the best golfers in history. Better players do not always play in any one zone of the lane. They learn to play and be comfortable playing in ANY part of the lane that the conditions dictate. It's impossible to say whether a player should play on the right side or left side of a given lane. You play where the conditions dictate. If you know anything about football, then you've heard the expression, "Take what the defense gives you." Similarly in bowling, you have to take what the lane gives you. Sometimes the conditions are more favorable to playing out by the edge. Other times, you have more miss area if you play deep inside. Still other times, playing around the track area of the lane where there is the most amount of play (between the 2nd and 3rd arrows) is likely going to yield better results. It all depends on how the lanes are dressed, how much play they have had since the last time they were oiled, and even who you're bowling with and where they are playing. Understanding how to read lanes and knowing how to adjust to always changing lane conditions is a big part of the skill set a bowler must develop to be competitive in our sport. I would never say a player should typically play from one particular part of the lane. You watch the pros. Or watch the kids on PRODIGY from week to week. Sometimes they're playing in the middle of the lane. Sometimes they're in the track area. And sometimes they're playing out by the gutter. You gotta learn to play ALL areas of the lane depending on where the conditions that day dictate you play.
