PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR -- 11-04-2017 "The Seventh Frame Sweat"

With many of the PRODIGY regulars like Logan F., Charlie, Brandon and others out of town with their Georgia All-Stars team, bowling a tournament in Myrtle Beach, this week's PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR episode features some new faces you haven't seen before on the show. But the action is no less thrilling.
Not only do we feature a whole different type of stepladder competition featuring 7 players, but we throw a wrench in the works with a slight "twist" to the format. You see, with baseball's World Series just ending this week (congrats to the Astros), we take some inspiration from America's national pastime and it's traditional "seventh inning stretch." But in our case, we call it "The Seventh Frame Sweat," and it's not intended to give anyone a moment to relax. Quite the opposite. You see, each player's first ball in the 7th frame of each match determines whether or not they'll get to continue. It's like a Single Ball Elimination in the 7th frame of each match, with the player getting the low pinfall on the first ball in the 7th frame being eliminated from the match immediately. Except if two tie for low pinfall, all tie, and everyone gets to complete the match. So it's not a given that anyone will be eliminated. This little wrinkle adds a critical pressure point in the match where players must perform, or they're done for the day. And you know how I love putting these players in pressure situations.
USBC Silver Coach Randy Brown is the Executive Producer of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR and has the play-by-play call. This episode of PRODIGY was recorded on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 at Brunswick Zone Roswell in Roswell, Georgia.
As always, your comments are welcome and encouraged. But please, keep your remarks positive about the players. If you have a criticism, keep it constructive. Comments posted that are mean-spirited, derogatory, insulting or demaning toward our junior bowlers will be promptly removed and the commenter may be banned from commenting again on this channel. But if your comment is constructive and helpful, of course it's welcome. Remember, the mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers. Keep your comments in that spirit and we'll have no problems.
PROGRAM NOTE: Next Saturday (11/11), we'll be recording our final "full field" event prior to Thanksgiving. Then on 11/18, the PRODIGY event we record will be open only to kids who bowl league at Brunswick Zone Roswell. That'll be our annual Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout. The following week -- Thanksgiving weekend -- we will be OFF. There will be no league bowling on Thanksgiving weekend, and hence, there will be no PRODIGY episode recorded on Thanksgiving weekend. We'll all be laying on our couches watching football and polishing off the last of our holiday feast. The next date for PRODIGY taping after Thanksgiving will be on Saturday, December 2nd at Brunswick Zone Roswell. We usually start at around 12:30. So if you're coming from another bowling center, it's best to get in touch with Coach Randy and let him know you're on the way.
Thank you for watching and supporting PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR. Be sure to send your PRODIGY SELFIE to the email address mentioned on the show and you're liable to see your selfie on a future episode. If you like what you see on PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR, please SUBSCRIBE to this channel to be notified whenever a new episode goes up, and click the THUMBS UP on the videos you like.
Finally, a big thank you to all those generous viewers who have donated to our PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR GoFundMe campaign. You helped pay for our new camcorder (which I'm still learning how to operate). Soon, we'll be adding the camera platform that comprised "Phase 2" of our fundraiser. And it wont be long before we're ready to add the microphone and portable recorder. Phase 4 of the fundraising campaign includes funds for a second camcorder. We are still accepting donations to reach our goal. Please visit www.gofundme.com/prodigy-bowl... for complete details. And again, thank you for your generosity.

I must say I am proud of Christians growth....not too long ago he let his emotions get the best of him. He is tempering it much better. That will go a long way towards future success. Congratulations young man!

Nathan Moore thanks, if only I would say so about my backswing. It creates three bad things. 1. Bad timing, I push away more on the third step not the 2nd. 2. Spine angle, this is actually the cause of the high backswing. It's more horizontal then vertical. I NEED to work on that. And 3, balance. When I get to the line, im more likely to fall of balance which would make me pull the ball or something else. Thank You though!

Are you referring to the same Christian who, after getting eliminated in one of the Seventh Frame Sweats, walked off camera, and in a moment of rage, nearly put his fist through a chair, injuring his hand and nearly knocking himself out of a tournament the next day? THAT Christian? I would *love* to see him get his emotions under control. But we're not quite there yet. He's a sweetheart of a kid. That's why I'm so hard on him. He has a lot of raw potential. But he's been told since he was a little kid that he's going to be really good and that he's a natural. So he's been taught to believe that bowling will come easy to him. Indeed, his raw talent has gotten him this far, but it won't take him any farther. Hard work and dedication to LEARNING FUNDAMENTALS and developing MUSCLE MEMORY to build a new swing, based on those fundamentals (not jerking the ball to the top like he learned to do as a 6-year-old, or jerking it down from the top as he does now) is part of the improvement he needs to make. But it's not enough to do it right for a day if he's going to revert to his old ways the next time he goes to bowl. He has to commit to this new way of bowling TODAY, TOMORROW, AND FOREVER. I'm much tougher with Christian than I am with any of our other kids, but that's only because of the friendship I enjoy with him and his mom. I care about him. (I care about all our kids, of course. But ours is a somewhat unique relationship.) I want to see him succeed. But he's at an age right now where his contemporaries (Logan F., Brandon, Charlie, etc.) are taking huge leaps forward and Christian's progress has stalled a bit. We'll know in the next year if he's going to progress and really become a top young bowler, or if he's just going to be an accomplished house shot bowler. One can make money bowling as an adult. The other cannot. He has goals in this area. My job, as a coach and as a friend, is to get him to realize that it takes more than merely "believing" you're good. You have to actually KNOW your game.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
McFluffy: Your balance is directly related to your spine angle. You get so far forward (and far to the right) that your spine angle is almost parallel to the floor at times. No way can you keep your balance that way. That's also a big reaon your swing gets so ridiculously high. As we discussed on the phone tonight, you need to do a few things: (a.) get the ball into the swing sooner, on your SECOND step, not your THIRD; (b.) keep your spine angle more erect (watch some RU-vid videos of the great Brian Voss to get a picture in your mind of what I'm talking about -- I'm not saying mimic him, I'm just saying let the image of his spine angle matriculate into your thoughts about what YOUR swing should look like) -- this will cause your swing to lower naturally; (c.) get the thought in your head of your swing being less the shape of a U and more the shape of a C. More horizontal in shape, less vertical. And I wouldn't hate seeing you move back a foot or two and get a bit more forward momentum to your approach. (We haven't spent much time on that. But it's a subject that you will eventually have to address. It goes hand-in-hand with making your swing more horizontal in shape and less vertical.) Much to work on. Good thing you're still young.

I always wished the old Pro Bowlers Tour series would ditch the "Tip of the Week" feature and replace it with a feature like this. During the Anthony/Roth/Holman era, I would love to have seen weekly highlights from the Dick Weber/Don Carter/Ray Bluth era. In this case, I don't mean to merely show highlights, as that probably wouldn't be strictly fair use of copyright material. But in this case, for educational purposes, I think it qualifies.

The production value is top notch. Dare I say, broadcast ready. Perhaps you could see about clearing the rights, and perhaps licensing the segment. If anything, it's great for the resume. In another comment I think you said you work or specialize in audio. I would guess you do voice work. The entire show is of great quality, and i'm sure the recording is the easiest part. I can see that there is a ton of post production work. Which is huge time suck, especially if you are a one man operation. The results are great, and I hope everyone appreciates your efforts as much as I do...
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
+FatLane - Your kind remarks are much appreciated. And your guess is right on the mark - I am a voice talent. www.RandyBrownVO.com I also used to do play-by-play of PGA TOUR golf on network radio. Before that, I “played the hits” and programmed major market radio stations for many years, and was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2009. I would love to see PRODIGY grow, and if that were to include some kind of TV deal, I would love it. But I’m not sure how to chase that, and my sense is, any growth will be more sustainable if it happens organically. Thank you for recognizing all that goes into the production and post-production of a one-man project like this. It won’t come as a surprise to you that I spend about 20-25 hour each week editing every show - all squeezed between Saturday afternoon when I get home from the bowl and the usual release sometime Monday. But as it would almost have to be, it is a labor of love.

Thanks, BullyBrian 82. I'm always looking for ways to mix things up and keep it interesting. I've been told many times (by players, parents and viewers alike) that it's one the things they like most about PRODIGY. The thing I like most about this particular format is, even if a player is running away with a match, there is that wild card in the deck (the 7th Frame Sweat) where they could get unexpectedly bounced, so even the players chasing from behind MIGHT still have a chance. But more importantly, that 7th Frame Sweat adds a pressure point to the match where kids are put in a pressure situation and are forced to perform in the clutch. If they can succeed in striking in a clutch situation enough times, it will build their confidence. There's no better feeling in bowling than striking when you really need one.

Coach I've noticed that few of the right one handlers plant one or two steps sideways then plant their left foot straight. Is that a new style of today? I thought all steps were supposed to be straight? For instance Christian his approach is left step, right-foot sideways, left step, right sideways then left plant, throw the ball. Are the sideways steps to generate more power with the hips? I'm just curious ..thanks ! P.S. I enjoy all these kids..their awesome!!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Yeah, it's fair to say that there's more emphasis on getting the hips involved in the swing nowadays than when you and I were first taught bowling and the conventional wisdom at the time was to keep everything square. I'd say you still want that slide foot to finish roughly perpendicular to the foul line. Some things never change.
@ddtalk

Thanks Randy! I didn't know Carmine Salvino had that intricate a part with ball construction! I knew all the other info but wow! I remember bowling with my dad and him looking at the ball and asking me when they got the third hole🙂..he told me some of the history and how he would be paid a quarter a frame to be the pin setter...I actually threw my 10 pins with two fingers for awhile growing up... Then eventually dad and I started throwing fingertips and it changed both our games..I'm glad your showing some of these golden oldies. My chances of coming to see you guys got better about 2 months ago..My 30 year old nephew, his wife and son moved to Atlanta! So even if I can't drive it I can hop a ride with my sister..hang in there with your new technology..you'll get there..its a lot to learn! ...Dave

I would *love* to get the girls involved. We've actually got a few new girls bowling with us this season at BZ Roswell, and some of 'em can really light it up. But so far, I haven't been able to persuade any of them -- including Kara and Korina, PRODIGY veterans -- to stay after and bowl. Not sure why. I'd love to do an all-girls episode of PRODIGY. Similarly, I'd love to do an all-little kids episode of PRODIGY, but I've yet to be able to persuade enough of them to stay after to make a go of it. That said, I will get some girls to bowl PRODIGY, even if I have to take the show to another bowling center to do it. I wanted to do a co-ed doubles format for Valentine's Day last February, and I'm hoping we can do it this coming February. But the bowlers have to want to stay and bowl. Believe me, I've thought about it.

I think it's a matter of getting the bowling center to go along with it. Evidently, they have stuff going on after junior league on Saturdays that makes it tough. They want PRODIGY-SATELLITE to be done by 1. That ain't gonna happen. We don't start until after league is over. Here in Roswell, we usually finish between 3 and 4. (League starts at 10.) They're either committed to it or they're not.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Honestly, the reason I thought of this way to load up the stepladder (7 players, 3 per match) was in the wake of last week's Halloween show where we had three of the matches end really early, I got to thinking afterwards if we'd had three players in each match, then if one had eliminated himself early, at least there'd be two players left who might give us a better chance to take the match to its ten-frame conclusion. Next year if we do the Trick Or Treat 1-2-3 format again, I'll use this stepladder format. As for the 7th frame sweat, that's just my way of adding a pressure point to the match where kids have to perform under pressure. Besides, it gives the kid who's trailing in the match reason to keep trying to stay close to the 2nd place kid. You never know. The leader just might bow out after 7 frames. Keeps everybody engaged.

Long before I started video recording our kids after league and PRODIGY became a thing, a handful of our better youth bowlers would stay after league and just bowl. Sometimes they'd bowl a game or two of "qualifying" to set the seeding for a pretend stepladder. They woudn't bowl for anything, just bragging rights. You don't need a coach or a guy with a camera to round up kids after league to just bowl and hold their own little "unofficial, informal and impromptu after league challenge matches." All you need are kids who are willing to stay after league and bowl some more. The ones most likely to do that are usually the better bowlers who enjoy practicing and bowling as much as they can. Those also tend to be the kids whose parents are already accustomed to staying all day at the bowling center watching their kids bowl. Just because the league doesn't organize it for you doesn't mean you can't get it started on your own. Talk to your friends in the league and see if they want to stay after and stage their own little matches. Use your imagination and creativity to dream up formats, or just bowl a game or two as a qualifier and seed the top 3 or 4 or 5 players into a stepladder. There's no rule that says you have to do it any certain way. I mix it up all the time with the PRODIGY kids. If the league won't challenge you, then challenge yourself and the other kids in the league. Good luck. (We'd love to have you here. Sounds like your enthusiasm and love for the game is exactly what I look for in recruiting kids for our program.)

He threw a few different balls, looking for the right one to match up. But the one he started with (the beige colored one), I thought gave him the best look. I have no idea what it is.

Nolan needs a heavier ball. Badly😂 he would get so much more carry

All of the above. I also think he might tend to straight out that arm a bit if he went to a heavier ball.
@Ben-jz3mt

Ethan Maulfair Better yet, resurface the ball. It seems to have lost a lot of hook since last year. I believe it’s a Brunswick Slingshot, which is a fairly angular ball, even if it came out in 2010. Less axis rotation would help the ball get into a roll, possibly giving better carry

How many pounds does Nolan use
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
I forget what he told me. Either 10 or 12. Really light for his age. He's 16.
@infernalspectre8578
@infernalspectre8578 6 лет назад
Is that actually really light for the age? I'm 16 and I have a hard time throwing a 10 lb ball. I can't get my wrist to support the ball enough to keep my wrist behind the ball?

Cigarzrule - No. He was throwing other people’s equipment. And here’s a news flash for ya. He was experimenting with the two-handed delivery. And the times I spotted him throwing it, he was throwing it pretty good.

Ok the zoom on this camera is so blurry and it’s just terrible the iPhone camera is way better
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
If you think the iPhone looks better than this camera, you need to get your eyes examined by a professional. And I don't use the zoom on the camera. The camera is unmanned. Or in television vernacular, it's a "lock down shot," which means the camera is locked down and no manual operation of it is performed while filming. All the camera moves are done in post-production, during the editing process. Any time there's a digital zoom performed past 200% magnification, it exceeds the number of pixels required to fill out a 1920x1080 (1080p) screen. So it's always a balancing act. How much zooming can I do before it looks bad? In the eyes of the purist, that limit would be 200% magnification. But to zoom in to 200% magnification would not get you in close enough to the pins to make zooming at all even worth doing. So I break the rules a bit and see how far I can take it. On last week's show, all the zooms went into about 745%. On this week's show, I went in close to 795%. I'm exploring the limits of how far I can go. This is just the second week we've been using this new camera, and there's going to be a process of discovery. Last week I made the calculation that we could get away with editing in 1080p (instead of 720p) and it would still look better than it did with the iPhone. I still believe that. And for proof, I offer to you the "Before and After" sequence during the Championship Match. This sequence begins at about :59:10 into the video. In the before and after sequence, the "before" is the iPhone and the "after" is the new Sony. There's really no comparison. The Sony blows the iPhone away. Be patient.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
The sound is muffled because I muffle it. It's actually quite bright coming right off the camera. So bright, in fact, it's hard to talk over. So I muffle it. It's new, and I'm still tweaking the settings to find just the right balance. We're not there yet. Be patient. Audio is my primary occupation. I'll get it right eventually. It's just going to take a little more time experimenting. I try to turn these videos around as quickly as possible. I'll spend some time with the audio over the next couple of weeks. By the time we return from the Thanksgiving break, I'll have it down.

It probably would've been easy or complicated to come up with the lyrics for that! I've never heard of any old-time song about bowling as much as I've heard for baseball! Who knows? Maybe it would've been called "Take Me Out to the Ballgame (PBT Mix)!" Call it what you want, though.
