Pinching, or also called topping, is a practice that helps young plants focus their energy on developing a strong root system and more stems which means more room for flowers and therefor more peppers!
It's simple to do, only takes a minute, and well worth it to increase production. We don't pinch all plants, but pepper plants benefit from it greatly.

It should make your plants so much bushier!!

Following to see the progress but I don't believe topping increases yield. It does make for a sturdier plant.

Makes the plant bushier, but it comes at a price the plant needs time to heel and redirect growth,so if you have a short season its detrimental to do this.

It helps the plant focus on root production at the beginning stages. That always makes a stronger plant!

@@ladyleeshomeyes but does that equate to more fruit? Not necessarily.

If there are more branches there is more room for flowers. If there are more flowers there should be more peppers. Since we slowed the up growth the root system now should be able to support the growth of more peppers. This is how it should work. I’ll try to do a follow up video later in the season and we can try to judge if it really works.

If you do this where you have a short growing season you will end up with no peppers.

Why? It's not slowing the plant that much... And if you have a short growing season it will be very beneficial for you to start your peppers indoors way before you have to plant them outside anyway. In fact, even here in the South we start our peppers indoors months before we plant them outside.

@ladyleeshome I live in Washington and been growing peppers since January and yes you may get away with pinching them if you have an adequate indoor growing setup but most people don't and you're going to lose at least two weeks just from pinching other incidents such as pests, damage, unseen weather conditions and diseases may set your plants back even further, perhaps weeks. Now I know there are certain pepper varieties that you absolutely should not pinch such as Bell, Pablano, and I wouldn't dare pinch my Rocoto. The fruit on average is smaller but with greater numbers of peppers and for some folks looking to grow larger peppers this just isn't the right route to go. If you prefer larger size jalapeños rather than a larger number of them then this may not be the right choice. Hotter thin walled peppers that are on average smaller are good candidates for pinching. I'm just saying results may vary and there are lots of factors to consider before going and pinching off all of your plants.

Ok, thanks for this detailed information. I am going to try and pay more attention this season to the size of peppers and the quantity of them and the difference between varieties. I don't remember a huge difference in the past but maybe I am just used to them producing a certain way. And you are right, there are a million variables when it comes to gardening and sometimes what's one person experiences is not the same as another because of weather, soil, and such.

It’s still tiny! I’ll try to do a follow up video later in the season.
