awesome, thank you. I remember Alan saying that it was costing him money to release music. So sad.

Yes. It is sad that he felt he had to retire due to a lack of support. VG :-)

I wish he had joined The Cure when he was given the opportunity. Financial security and he probably would have enjoyed working with Robert Smith.
@alexwestconsulting

@@mikewilson3581 I don't think he would have enjoyed that (I would have). He was already tired of being taken for granted, and that was when he had creative control. Under Robert, it would have been worse. I just wish he had taken on more commercial projects as producer or engineer, a la Flood, rather than pursuing being the primary artist in a climate that didn't appreciate him. I would have loved to see him produce an actual rock record. When he quit music it was a turbulent time for all but the most established artists, and even some of them. The old revenue streams dried up and he didn't know how to fit in, like so many of the old guard, electronic music overrun with shitty dance music. Shit, if he'd just become a youtube synth personality even he'd be at the top of the list now. The technology that fueled him sadly did him in.

@@alexwestconsulting Yeah. It's a shame his talents are not being utilized. If he only had the recognition like Gary Numan (who Alan is friends with) or Jean Michel Jarre. They are both still going strong. But I think Alan being pretty much the "quiet one" when he was in Depeche Mode didn't help matters.

OMG... Trent and Alan are (IMO) two of the most brilliant minds in music in the last 40 years. Those two collaborating would be mind blowing.

Bravo! If nothing else, I hope Alan knows how much he was appreciated by his fans. He was DM's grey eminence.

Alan was the secret ingredient of their great success. They wouldn’t became SO great without him, even with Martin’s and Dave’s brilliant talents. They never were workoholics and didn’t have such musical taste and education as Alan.

It bugged me the last statement i heard from DM when asked about Alan, Dave i think it was, said something like it's been decades, get over it... well Dave, being as Alan was one of the Lead contributors to the Band in their most successful years, you can't blame people for wishful thinking.
@Alex666Murdoc

1000%. No one can stop us from dreaming. Reasonable dreaming. They can't get over the fact Alan was just the best and the only. They lost their sound when he left.

@Alex666Murdoc they definitely changed a bit when they carried on without Alan. They still have some good songs without him but overall not the same.

@@rnkmode1876 Yep... Alan was the difference between making a quality album, first track to last track... and just making an album with one or two quality tracks with a bunch of fillers. Heck... when Alan was in DM... even the tracks that did not make it... that were B-sides... were just amazing tracks on their own.

@sephlar True. You had a ton of B sides. Fools, Dangerous, Sea of Sin, My Joy, a ton of mixes, etc..

Considering how little money you need to produce music nowadays - I’ve always wondered if Alan still puts things together on his laptop from time-to-time? Music is in his dna - surely he still gets the urge to produce?

I was absolutely fanatical about the band, in 94 at the two shows in SP I was the first in line to enter. When Alan left DM I realized that I was actually a fan of Alan, DM means absolutely nothing to me anymore.

I think on an older version of his website there was a section for soundtracks, where he listed at least one project from some TV series. Don't remember the name...

Let's take a look. Alan Wilder leaves the band. The three remaining members believe they can create the same music sound-wise, but they realize they can't. That's why they have ended up where they are now: a cartoon band messing around on stage. Watching David Gahan stumble around on stage is painful to see.

You're so wrong.. He's still the frontman he became during the Alan era, which is, like Martin's song writing, to his credit not Alan's

Forget DM, the problem with Recoil is that it's all very 90s, no matter what you listen to. As for Dave, I'm old enough to have attended gigs in 1993 and Dave stumbling around, unable to sing was a thing then.
