Important message, thank you. I just checked the Canadian and US product recall pages you provided, and there's a huge difference in the amount of products listed for recall. For the many Canadian divers who purchase their equipment in the US, please be sure to check the Canadian AND American sites.
Thank you, Alec. An important topic about which every equipment owner should be aware. Thanks also for including links to the government safety/recall notice sites.
I got a decorative 460 that looks brand new.. the folks at the dive shop were impressed that I have kept it in such great condition.... except, I can not find a rebuild kit for it any where. It does not leak or snatching just so old I wanted to rebuildvit and keep useing it. I got it after another diver loaned it to his girl friend and she panicked after seeing a 9 foot sand tiger shark while on her open water check out dive, on a ship wreck off NC, and she dumped her gear in 40 feet of water and went to the surface. A month later she refused to go clean up her mess and I wanted a reason to go to the boat wreck and check it out. I got there , and did not see any sharks... not even any big fish were there. The tank, BCD, weight belt .. everything was right there on the sand bottom in one neat little pile. Do I grabbed it, and the tank still had plenty of air, there were some sea shells in the grab bag and even watch was still working. I took the tank back to the dive shop on the inspection sticker and found out it was a rental. they called the guy and he came up to the shop, and took the BCD, and gave me everything else.. he was still making payments on the BC... I felt bad because I didn't want him to give up his gear but he broke up with the girl and said he was moving to the mid west where there was no large bodies of water so it was just dead weight. So I serviced the regulator and kept it cl3anband had it since the early 1990s. I even used it every day for my commercial diving stuff. I hate to throw it in drawer because UT still works great but has not been serviced in over 30 years.
Thanks for the story and getting service, proper parts and an experienced pro, are harder every year for old, good gear. Sorry but i don't know any service folks for that model. Try posting your situation on www.scubaboard.com and see if the scuba community has help. Good luck. A
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter thanks.. it's probably better just to put it in a display case. Have changed the 2nd stages over the years and the consol all work great.. I up graded to newer ones over the years. One day I will end up with a brand new adjustable and an Ocean reef FFM or Kirby mask.. lol
As you say, don't kiddle with a recall This can be due to a design flaw, an assembly fault, defective component and usually, manufacturers stay quiet about the source of the recall. when they say " may fail", this usually means that a failure occured and they are sued so don't submit your equipment to the recall makes that you dischagge them from liability in the case of a damage due to an equipment failure. It is a very important point. very good topic excellent video
When I purchased my Genesis Prana Reg set. Including Octo, I Registered on their website just in case. My Prana Octo wasn't Recalled. But the Purge Button locking nut came off. Causing the Purge, Diaphragm and other parts to Fall Out at 30 feet. Fortunately I was able to stop the Freeflow and Surface. Let's say it made an Interesting AOW Class. As I was on the 2nd dive at the time. The Reg et was only used 3 or 4 times.
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter I stopped by the shop to pick them up. Good thing he Tested them before I took them home. As soon as he opened the Tank Valve, Loud Pop. Now I have a problem with the First Stage. Maybe next week??
Excellent advice! By the way I’m heading to Turks and Caicos this November to board the Aggressor ll for a week of diving. My first live aboard experience. Any advice?
Hi Alec that is good information. I wonder if my vintage stuff has as many recalls but everyone who knew about them is long gone, I would expect things were over engineered in those days rather than trying to make thinner yokes from crappy scrap metal? I will have to take my exploding Pinto or maybe the Toyota with the sticking gas peddle or maybe my scooter with the warm battery down to the LDS and check it out. Hopefully I don't park next to a Tesla. Take care Owen m
You make me laugh. Kevin has a Tesla and loves it. Old gear, (or modern gear when we were kids), was made to last as there were few LDS around, fewer service pros and everything was DIY. Fun times back then but much safer today. A
