Product Review: Bee Pro Pollen Substitute - Feeding - #Beekeeping Basics - The Norfolk Honey Co.
In the previous video I showed how I mix up my pollen substitute and in this video I am showing you how I feed it to the bees. I picked a sunny day and the bees were very active!
I have used a few different types of Pollen Substitute but never Bee Pro from Mann Lake which is stocked in the UK by Bee -Equipment.co.uk
This video is not sponsored and the product has not been supplied free of charge. I purchased it from their website paying the full amount including postage.
In this video you will hear my honest thoughts of this product in terms of the purchase, delivery and mixing of the product. I will follow this video with another showing how I use it on my colonies and how the bees react to it.
Here is the description from the Mann Lake product page:
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Different protein sources contain different amino acid levels; it's for this reason that a mixture of protein sources should be included in a pollen substitute. A correct amino acid balance is the key to efficient utilization of protein.
Protein quality is determined by its level of essential amino acids. A shortage of any one essential amino acid makes overall protein utilization by the bee less efficient. For example, the bees require 4% Iso-leucine. If the current feed you are using only has 3% Iso-leucine, your bees can only utilize 75% of the available protein.
Can be fed in dry form in a feeder box placed in the yard or made into patties by mixing with high fructose corn syrup or sugar syrup and placed in the hive.
Free of all contaminants. Natural pollens may contain pesticide residue and disease carrying bacteria (foulbrood).
Can be used for building colonies in late winter or early spring, to prepare for pollination and to maintain or increase brood production prior to and after honey flow.
Gives your bees the best nutrients available for the production of larval food.
High protein pollen substitute which supplies the lipids, minerals, and B-complex vitamins honey bees need to produce larval food.
Specially formulated for the commercial beekeeper who is feeding syrup as the source of carbohydrates in the bee's diet.

Greetings from across the pond (US), I purchased a small canister of Bee-Pro just to have some available and have left the powder out in the winter after noticing bees foraging in a bird feeder. Been using pre-made pollen patty and quite costly to use. Also made sugar brick and added a little Bee Pro pollen sub to the sugar cake, the bees really went for the 2.5% protein in late winter as the weather began to warm.

I notice the crownboard wasn't flush with the brood box, therefore leaving a gap. Doesn't this allow the warm air to escape?

ive been watching your videos now ive watched all the basics and starting to work through the others. im hoping to start beekeeping in 2018 lot of studying to be done 1st i would never forgive myself if i did something stupid and killed a full hive of bees. ive got a question if thats ok. why feed sub pollen instead of just a sugar syrup or them sugar pattie things? forgot the name now lol thx

Hi Jay, The sugar syrup is carbohydrate and the pollen substitute is protein. The bees need the protein to feed to the young larvae and we are trying to build up a larger brood nest of larvae earlier in the season. Don't worry about making mistakes when beekeeping, we all do it. The thing to do is remember by those mistakes and try not to repeat them. When we make mistakes the bees usually correct it for us anyway! As a beekeeper you are likely to lose some bees at some time, just learn what happened and try to prevent it happening again. Stewart

Why do we make patties out of pollen substitute instead of just putting the powder on paper directly over the frames. The patties are so hard. Bees don't have to get hard pollen from flowers so why don't we leave it loose?

Hi Greg, Thanks for commenting and leaving such a good question. Pouring pollen substitute powder straight onto the top bars of the frames can cause problems because once the bees start moving over it there is a tendency for the powder to fall down through the colony and onto the floor where it will be wasted and probably only feed the wax moth larvae. If you make up a loose pollen substitute pattie and wrap it in cling film it will stay soft for a considerable length of time. Certainly enough time for the bees to use it if they are going to. I'll make some up over the coming weeks and feed it to a few colonies and show it on video again. Stewart

What is the purpose of having the chicken wire around your hives? Enjoy watching your videos.

Ok, thank you. I am having a challenge with skunks stealing my bees and one of my beekeeping friends has suggested putting chicken wire around my hives. Thought you might be having skunk problems also.

you must have scratch marks on your hives if its skunks?

I was thinking robbing or orientation flights. Then you clarified it was an orientation flight. Sir do you think your colonies are already laying and hatching brood yet?
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 7 лет назад
Hi Rabbit, Yes orientation flights as they were very strong when I added the pollen substitute. Yes, I believe all my colonies are laying and producing brood because it has been so mild. We are in a slightly colder spell at the moment but I think the queens are now starting their build up to Spring. Stewart

I've been very curious as to what my one hive is doing in that regards, but haven't wanted to open it up. i can see activity when its nice weather. our winter hasn't really hit good yet. its been so mild with one cold spell of single digits for couple nights. still with one hive left I've been leary of opening them up. I'm glad you recommend not opening them up for full inspections
