We are hoping to start homesteading soon. Our farming philosophy will be an eclectic mix of permaculture, organic, back to Eden type of farming. One thing that all of these farming philosophies have in common is mulch, mulch, mulch. Seen as we live in quite a dry area I have found it difficult to find enough mulch for even our suburban garden so I know that it will be a challenge when gardening on a bigger scale. So we decided to buy a shredder / mulcher so that we can shred whatever organic material we do get our hands on. We started in our own garden to start gathering as much mulch as possible before we move. So we bought a Stihl electric shredder and here is our first impressions of using it.

It worked really well and will be perfect for what we need it for. Seen as Hibiscus branches are very sticky when chopped up we found we should rather leave them to harden for a few days before shredding. Most other vegetation should be shredded immediately before they harden.
