As a non-pilot but keen flight-simmer, I have always found the wire-bound Pooleys guide to be very interesting and useful when used in conjunction with GA charts for flight planning. I like reading the Guide and have learned a lot from them. Good open and honest review, Jon. Best wishes from Wirral!

Good honest review about a great product and I'm not just saying that because I won a loose leaf bound version in your December 'identify the airfield' competition!! The plates give all the details you need about the airfields and the 100 pages or so of additional information are a great aid to learning \ revision. Having myself been around for a little longer than the Flight Guide, I prefer the paper version (of most things). Plus the information doesn't disappear when the ipad batteries die! Really enjoying the videos Jon. They're informative and entertaining.

A good review of a must have product, I prefer tangible print media to support the digital domain (and vice versa). Who remembers 50% of their air law? Hundreds of thousands of items of information, just one reminder might prevent a serious incident. I will take the book onboard but have photocopies of relevant information for my flight, especially enroute diversion aerodromes. [PRICES: Pooley's UK Guide loose-leaf +binder +"iPlates" digital version 1 year subscription +postage = £66.45p saving £15 on iPlates annual digital version. Digital and paper updates/revisions included. Just the RING or STANDARD BOUND print versions of the UK Guide, as in video, are £34.00 including p&p, and updates by email]

I'd wondered why the loose leaf version cost more. Now I know! (The periodic physical updates throughout the year). Thanks.

Great review John! I have the Pooleys subscription as an add-on to my Skydemon and when I visit a new airfield I print and laminate the relevant plate. I got to about 10 in before realising I probably should have just paid for the physical version and saved myself the work. 🤣 Oh well, good gift idea for the future!

I own the Danish equivalent and thought I’d be using it to find some inspiration for trips I’d like to do. Though, I keep turning to SkyDemon time and time again, which is an outstanding product (way better then ForeFlight for European VFR). In my opinion, physical flight guides like these are a thing of the past and don’t offer much value to the modern pilot.

Do be aware though, certainly for UK flying, that Skydemon on its own only gives you a fraction of the information you need for a proper aerodrome pre-brief. Other sources will need to be cross checked too if you don't have a flight guide of some sort.

Hi I am interested to find out what information you refer to that is not available through sky demon but would be available on a physical book?

To make sure we are on the same page, When we’re talking about SkyDemon, we are talking about SkyDemon without a flight guide subscription? If so, then we are talking opening hours, details of hazards and warnings, detailed join information, contact details for cafes, hotels, taxi companies, and what maintenance is available for example. Charges information, types allowed and those not. It is an endless list. To be clear, I’m talking here about a vanilla SkyDemon subscription without a flight guide subscription.

Wow! This accidentally took me back! I've landed gliders at Badminton, Sywell and I've spoken to Cranfield but I managed to soar away and get home. Oh and obviously I've taken the motorglider to Glenforsa! I will keep your comments in mind when the guide update comes around this year. I will try to trim it down a bit.

I wish they had a simple e book version as well that is not a subscription.

As a product for U.K. use Pooleys is probably meets all the needs of the average PPL, I far prefer the information presented as an add on to SkyDemon rather than the book.If you are going deep into Europe it is probably better to standardise on the Jeppesen products and use Foreflight as your flight planning platform especially if you have the ability to link to the aircraft avionics

Can anyone say which is better, SkyDemon or Pooleys iPlates? I think SD may be better since you can reference it directly whilst using SD. On the other hand, purchasing Pooleys loose leaf with binder offers the iPlates at a significant discount. Has anyone experience of both?
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter Год назад
Personally Tom - I think if you already have a SkyDemon subscription, adding on a pooley's subscription to that would be many peoples choice because of the ease of access from within the app and the fact that the plates are georeferenced.

@@TheFlyingReporter Ideal, thanks, Jon. I’ve enjoyed your recent hangar videos covering aircraft maintenance. If you get the chance, could you perhaps produce one explaining what’s involved in an aircraft annual.

You've seem to be chucking out your well produced vids, Jon. Or maybe it's me locked up at home watching your videos with my torn ankle ligament. I need to get my GA fix as I'm grounded 😩

Is it a printed copy of the AIP or do they add something to it?
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter Год назад
It contains far more detail that you can find in the AIP, plus not all aerodromes are in the AIP.

On paper I agree, but SkyDemon isn’t complete without the Pooley’s and/or AFE plates. They contain so much more information than the built in plates. They also get amended automatically in their electronic versions. How many paper guide users actually do the monthly updates? I subscribe to both Pooley’s and AFE both for the information that one may pick up on but the other misses, but also so my students get to see both and choose one or the other. I definitely recommend the electronic versions.
