Mikel and Nima picked up their camera skills and headed to Swayambhunath Temple with Allie. They met with Sange who is a Sherpa from the Makalu region of Nepal. Mikel and Nima are also from Makalu. This is Sanges’ story.
In 2017 Sange was guiding his client on Mt Everest when a storm hit above the South Summit. Sange requested his client to turn around because of the worsening conditions. His client refused to turn back and continued on to the summit. It was late and Sange wouldn’t leave his client to save himself. They both became weak on descent and lost consciousness. The next morning Nepali guides performed a rescue in the death zone and saved their lives. Sange and his client survived but suffered severe frostbite. Sange lost all his fingers which put an end to his guiding career.
Sherpa and Nepali guides should not be put in this position while they are working on the mountain. They deserve to be respected. Many clients come to Everest with a lack of training and experience. They believe that if they pay enough money their guides will make up for their lack of abilities. This puts the local guides at extreme risk.
Everest will always be a bucket list mountain. The only way to address these issues is to educate and raise awareness.
