I say, let the little miss learn the hard way. When I was 17 I came home with hair color that my Mum said would turn out green. Since she only had 25 years experience as a colorist, figured that I knew better. Well, guess who was mistaken? She made me go to school with my new green hair for three days before she fixed it for me. Never doubted her again.
I agree with what many others have said: you look absolutely fantastic in this video! So fresh, radiant and youthful. It would be wonderful if you could do a rundown of what you used to achieve this look 💟
I love how Ralph started squeaking right on cue 😂 it was like “yes, hello everyone, this is the toy mummy bought me” 😂😂 I used Apri in the 80’s, it was like a sandblaster on the face 😂
Who remembers using Aapri apricot scrub in the 1980s? Here’s an extract of how it was promoted: “It’s time you got tough. With Aapri facial scrub. It’s brown. It’s rough. Its coarse granules of crushed apricot seeds are more concentrated, more abrasive than any other scrub.” 😧😧
Coconut oil on the feet with socks overnight can really help dry skin. Also coconut oil is nice rubbed through the ends of long hair before plaiting. It keeps pinkie tails smooth 😊
my boyfriend used to use nail polish remover as a toner for his acneprone and very very oily skin - so I'm grateful that he now uses up my Origins Ginzeng Scrub I used to rebuy 😬 and I got him to use a Ordinary serum and an aloe vera hydration spray - a win, I guess? 🤔
Ah,ah,ah, Ralph is having a blast, no need to worry with bad skincare, lol...thanks for all the info, we need it...don't worry, here we are all dog lovers, well, I am, a huge dog lover and dog mom for the last 22 years.
Your makeup in this video is STUNNING!!! What are you wearing????? Sorry...I'm trying hard to listen to what you're saying but I keep looking at your skin and eye makeup and getting distracted lol..please do a tutorial
Thank you Gemma for this video! I think so many of us will benefit from your expertise! Sometimes I am overwhelmed by choices, and this tells me some things to avoid! Also I love that you talk about protecting our natural skin barrier! Such important information! We have heard recently about the importance of our gut microbiome for our health. AND our skin also has a microbiome that protects our health! We must avoid damaging that microbiome barrier with products and alcoholic cleansers that open us to infections! And I agree, you look especially beautiful today!
You look lovely Gemma♥️ Beautiful eyeshadow and the lipstick looks gorgeous ♥️I tried to find a place where you say what you are wearing but must have missed it♥️I love your videos, the length is just right, not too long ♥️
Please don't ignore Gemma's expert advice - being a fully qualified aesthetician means knowing mountains of stuff about skin .... AND it's fantastic free advice!!! Back in the day, I used facial wipes 🙈. I thought soap bars were too drying, so, in my ignorance, I grabbed the nasty face wipes. I feel sygpch a twerp now. Oh yes, I also used a cleansing brush tool too - honestly, no wonder I have boot leather skin!!!! We live and learn .... hopefully 😅 Lots of love and hugs 💖💗💖💗💖💗💖💗💖💗💖💗💖
Didn't get to see all of it but I am going back in to watch the beginning. Great video though. Funny story similar to your peeling story. Many years ago, I bought bikini wax just to use where my bathing suit didn't cover. I put it on as directed, both sides. It hardened. When I pulled it off, indeed the bits of hair came out but o.m.g., it was like I ripped out my innards! I bled and panted for quite a few minutes but all I could think about was...now I have to rip off the other side! Ha! Never again!
I own the peeling solution from the ordinary. I was very careful with it the first time, and I loved the results! I started using it twice a week, as stated on the bottle. My skin was over exfoliated in no time, and it hurt! I never had over exfoliated skin before, but I recognized it right away. Even splasing water over my face was hurting. Never again! It took a few weeks to heal. I still love the product, but I only use it about once a month now. You're right, be very very careful with it! It's no joke to mess up your skin barrier.
I love this, have pretty much the same list. I haven't used SLS in anything (toothpaste, face, body or hair cleansers) for about 20 years. Initially that was really hard to do, but you're right it's so easy to do now.
Omg that Apricot scrub brings back memories of me as a pimply teen in the 90s and being disappointed by the red raw results and the fact it did nothing except make my acne worse... like bleeding and stuff 😂😮
The St. Ives scrub is wonderful. My sister is 76 years old and she's used it most of her life and her skin is amazing. Th scrub is famous for a reason.
Great advice Gemma! I concur with your evaluations on these types of products. Please keep up your good work. I tried the Natural Moisturizing Factors from The Ordinary on your recommendation and it's been marvelous.
Vaseline is good for shaving cuts on your legs! Also the corners of the mouth before bed if you're prone to drynes/chelitis. I definitely would not put it under my eyes as am prone to millia.
I use makeup wipes while I am applying my makeup to keep my hands clean. I have used them on my face but I didn’t feel like they cleaned my face and i washed immediately. You are so right about some of the scrubs having things in them that can damage our skin. Who thought walnut pieces was a good idea. I was relieved as I don’t use anything with an X! That was a relief! Thanks😊
This winter I started to get eczema flare-ups around one of my eyes. Delightful. Vaseline has become my life saver. I use it during the day to prevent transepidermal water loss, and also to prevent me scratching my eyelids of when my skin itches. During the night I use my medicated cream and an eye cream on top. I used to use an electric brush to wash my face, and I looooved that squeaky clean feel. Don't yell at me. I know better now. I use it occasionally on my elbows and knees, especially if I'm preparing the skin for fake tan. It is an excellent exfoliator for those places ;)
I have super oily skin and live in a hot humid climate. (Think New Orleans) I use a lot of the things you dislike 😂. The more "gentle" I am with my skin, the worse my acne gets. You're absolutely correct. What works for you might not be appropriate for me. I am over 50 and my facial skin is 15. 🙄. My body skin, on the other hand, is over 50.
I fully agree. St Ives cleared my acne in my twenties. I’m 52 now and I still use it. My skin is amazing. If I don’t use it for three days I break out.
Gemma the central parting suits you better than anything else I’ve seen you do with your hair. You look stunning. I’ve used St Ives Blemish Scrub daily since my twenties after suffering with acne. I use a moisturiser afterwards. That’s all I ever use on my face. I’m now 52 and my skin is amazing. If I don’t use it for three days I break out. When I’ve had facials I’ve always had comments on how good my skin is. As long as you are gentle and don’t scrub hard it’s amazing. I hate the bashing it gets. It’s the only thing that’s ever worked on my acne and I often try new stuff. I will always use it.
I used a face peel mask a long time ago about 12 years. My daughter and her friend knocked the door to be let in from playing outside and I answered the door with my face peel that had dried and was flaking off and said my skin was coming off. They were horrified until i started laughing and explained what it was 😂 not used for many years cos didn't like the feeling of my skin being tight after using one. Prefer moisturizing and calming masks now.
When I worked directly for Clinique in the early 90s, I was working in a dept. store one day when a woman brought in her visiting grown daughter, who had been using Clinique's highly abrasive exfoliating scrub for 20 minutes every day!!!! OMG! She looked like she had a severe burn on top of a severe burn. I demanded that she see a dermatologist immediately and not touch her face with anything but cool water until she could get to the dermatologist. I never touched a scrub again.
I use it: I get horrible clogged, raised pores under my lip, chin & jawline. A light exfoliation with EA ceramide cleansing oil prevents a nasty piece of work brewing up
@allisonmoonshewandersferal7385 it judt reminds me of my first time using what felt like a special skincare products. Dermalogica was my first experience of a personalised skincare regime and always felt special to me as a teen. I moved from Apricot scrub and Clearsil face wash to starting to learn about ingredients in skincare and how to look after my skin 😊
I used to use St Ives. Stopped about 3 years ago from hearing that its too abrasive. The fun police 😂😂 I used the Biore strip once. I got nothing lol. I had a fail with the Ordinary peel and I love their products! I love The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors plus Phytocerimides! Does your mom use body Cera Vu for her face? I love that brand too. Thank you for this!! ❤
I had to laugh about your story about peeling masks. I was visiting my friends in London last month, I live in the US. We always do masks when we get together. This time we did the peeling kind. We did this around their table in the garden. Well……..we were having a drink, telling stories and just catching up so we might have left the mask on a bit too long. We decided to let my friend’s 8 year old granddaughter do the peeling off. Let’s say the screams, swear words and painful yelps could be heard two gardens over. It was that plus hysterical laughter. It was so painful we couldn’t control the laughter. The 8 year old wanted to stop but we told her she had to keep ripping. I will say our skin never felt softer and yes, the peach fuzz and light chin hairs were gone! But never again
I have some some sponges impregnated Foaming Teatree oriole cleanser and the sponge is what does the exfoliation. The springiness of the sponge prevents me from putting too much pressure on my skin. My other option is the ascorbic acid solution by the Ordinary. I only use these products once or twice a week because my skin is quite sensitive.
Gemma....you knocked it out of the park with this video (baseball referenced Home Run!). I love this kind of information and the actually education about ingredients, the good, bad and ugly!! I'm actually one of those that really likes The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution....BUT, I am very careful about the time it is on my face (I use a timer) and what I use afterwards. I hadn't used it in a while (had a skin thing going on, all better now!) and I am a Sunday facial girl, so I placed this back on my skin for literally 4 minutes!!!! My skin had, to me, an ashy look and this did the job. When I use this, I do not follow up with anything but a good moisturizer for the evening. **but I'm not yelling at you :)**. I'm very respectful of this product and the aggressiveness of the ingredients...so I'm very careful when using it, absolutely no distractions during use!! I use it once a month, I have pretty much normal skin, a bit dryer in winter months!!
Thanks Gemma for such an informative video!. I’ve tried slugging under by eyes once or twice and it worked well, but having said that I didn’t even do it once a week x❤
I used a peeling mask once, it was the first 'microdermation of my face, it hurt, it stung for days and it didn't even move the blackhead on my nose from large pore from using physical scrubs, yes not my finest hour, I was pleased about all my bumfluff coming off my face but I'd of made a sailor blush. I even rang the emergency department at my hospital, who recomended using water to ease it, no it didn't just made it harder to grip the damn mask to pull it off. I now use Paula's choice. I used Rens ready steady glow toner but that I could only use 1 or 2 times a week, I use Paula's choice every other evening. I used to use St Ives when I was realy young but didn't like it scratching my face even then and I never suffered from anything other than a couple of blackheads. Cue face cloth and most don't stand a chance of forming. The nearest I've got to feel what vasaline feels like is using Murads intense recovery cream onbthe outer portion of my face as it gets quite dry but when it was hot recently, it felt stifling on my skin, so I'm guessing thats how vasaline feels. Love watching and still learning. See you in the next one. Xx 😚 🤗 🥰
A good quality natural handmade soap may be all you need to cleanse - so inexpensive and many use no plastic packaging. I’m not talking about the harsh drying cheap and nasty soaps on most supermarket shelves - proper natural soap made by someone who cares more about creating a lovely gentle soap than their profit margins! Just check the ingredients list and judge for yourself 😊
Such an interesting video Gem, I’m really fussy about skincare an the only thing I’m guilty of using occasionally is the face wipes! Trying to phase them out 😬
I have never used most of these products...I am 63 and just starting to notice aging issues. I am not thrilled. Hearing about how all these products work is so helpful. I am starting to are fast and furious due to stress and menopause. Thank you for these videos. ❤
I always go back to Cerave as well hehe :P Regarding the cleansing brushes, I do not use it at the moment, but when I had a FOREO I did like to use it actually, it was relaxing and it was very gentle on the skin.
Hallo , I follow all this. Damaged my skin 6 yrs ago with brush face torture thingy. Ugh . Only thing I do is every Friday ( unless skin is feeling sensitive I will skip a week or two) is the ordinary red exfoliating stuff. My skin just responds well. I time it then mask my face after and then do a 3 to 4 step toner. Hydrate and plum my skin. Then snail mucin and moisturizer. I posted this on my wall. Great topic thank you so much. Oh ... Yes I received an gold peel thing in a beauty box umm choices were made and we'll took awhile to recover.
I would love to know the color you have on your lips, it’s quite gorgeous. Any chance you can tell us the color/brand you’re wearing on your lips? Please and thank you.
Gemma: If you posted a "What I'm wearing" in every description and used affiliate links, your viewers would appreciate it. Your viewers are asking for them. ; )
Gemma: Hi!! I love your channel and learn so much from you. How do you feel about raw coconut oil as a makeup remover? I’ve found it’s great at removing eye makeup but I wash right after I use it this way. What do you think of that?
Gemma, thank you I learned so much from you! I wanted to tell you also that your skin and make up look absolutely stunning. Can you remind me what under eye concealer you use? I have very dry under eyes. I’m not sure if it’s a drying one or moisturizing one
You look Amazing 🤩 as always! But extra stunning - I didn’t think it was possible 😅 please could you do a video on your look today. Your eye make up, your lips - absolutely stunning! and your skin is looking the bomb 💣 😂 share please 🙏 I won’t rest until you do 😂😂😂 xxxxx
Gemma, is it possible to get rid of milia? If so, would you please tell me how? I used coconut for a while during the winter as a first cleanse at night. I’m almost certain that is what caused the milia.
Ah yea, slugging. Nope. I get all thiOse tiny whiteheads and milia, just find it easier to slather a thicker layer of eye cream on at night. Can’t do facial oils too, same problem. I do love a scrubby scrub though, sorry, though I have tried to just use them once a week and use an exfoliating toner instead
Hi Gemma! Great video and your skin is amazing!! I am over 60, not wanting to use trentinoin at this point so could you recommend a retinal product? There are quite a few and would really appreciate your recommendation. Thank you.
Just wondering, I’ve heard you say before that you need to seal moisture in after using serums like retinol etc but does the same go for eye creams? I feel when I put another cream on top of either of my eye creams that my wrinkles get worse 😕. I’m 51 but look about 80 in photos, my under eye area is just awful ☹️. Btw, I love my beauty pie electric silicone cleansing brush ☺️
What are your thoughts on E45 cream? I used it religiously in my early 20s when I had eczema on my chin. This has now gone but I still use it out of habit as my chin is dry. Starting to wonder whether to stop
I do understand you so much. I once had a conversation with a woman that asked me to help her with her skin. I wanted to remove her vibes first as her skin was deeply irritated. But she refused this simple step as she liked to "clean" her skin in bed. I couldn't help her when she couldn't even get herself into the bathroom 😢
Hello. Love your channel, Gemma. I'm a 52 HR old dude from the USA. What are your thoughts on charcoal peel off masks for men? I use a mask a couple times a week. It gets rid of bumps and excess oil. Has helped me stay clear. Mens skin is a bit thicker. Thoughts?
Hi. Thank you for this video. Your skin and makeup look just perfect (could you share the tutorial for this look, please?) I've got a 11year old who's started getting blocked pores on his nose. I use CeraVe smoothing cleaner and then The Ordinary Glycolic Acid toner. It does not seem to be working anymore. I think because it's very hot and he gets sweaty during the day at school. What would you recommend?
I am on a lot of meds and the last 2 years have noticed a lot of skin tags on my face, I had them taken off in a good salon but after 6 months they are coming back I wondered if Tacha rice polish or a BHA or anything would be of benefit, any ideas please because I have always had good clear skin (dry though) and even though I am older than your mam still want to take care of myself. (I use sun screen as well) . ❤🙏😬
I sometimes use pure Shea butter in my very dry areas Gemma (I’m using tretinoin so my skin is seriously dry). Would you say that was ok? (I use it as slugging on the nights I don’t use tretinoin). I use shea butter as I am vegan so would never use Vaseline. Thank you. Oh and BTW do you still dermaplane your face? It seemed to be a huge ‘thing’ a while ago but it seems to have died down. Thank you!
Coconut oil makes my skin drier ( great for mouthwash though - but don't spit it in the sink). Exfoliating - hhmm I've seen some RU-vidrs ( not you) who have professional exfoliation and resurfacing done and without makeup they have almost like burn scared faces- it's not an improvement. I too in the past have used some daft stuff on my sensitive skin. When I was a teenager- steaming your face was a thing - not good I got a bad spider vein under my eye that took years to go away. When I see young people using whitening strips on their teeth, tugging their eyemakeup off with wipes I shake my head 😢😢
