My professor gave me that book to read when I was doing a paper on the Revisionist movement. That book is an anti-Israel diatribe by an activist not a scholar. I would refer you to works by Shmuel Katz and Jospeh Schechtman for a more balanced review.

Another scholar (rather than a muckraker like Shlaim) is Jacques Gauthier. He has a lecture on the creation of the Jewish state (and Arab states) without bias or polemics. The settlements erected during that period were mainly for security reasons. During that period, there very few checkpoints, and all of them for security purpose only. Until 1977 visit of Egyption President, no arab leader acknowledged Israel's right to exist. BTW: Anwar El-Sadat was murdered in Cairo as a result. Just a reminder that in August 1967, the Arab League declared the three No's, No recognition, No negotiations and No peace. So far, not a single Arab leader offered a solution to achieve Peace when Israel is part of it. From the other side, when Israeli offers given, the other side walked away without giving a counter offer.
