Thank you for the analysis. I just wonder if you can explain the item on 24th minute where they got up into the table and doing the last sitting pose. As you said, it was narrow table, how to make them pose nicely and not knocking each other? Also, I find out that Suga never have his mic on this performance. His mic is handed in the middle of the song, and after his part is over, the mic is gond again.

Yeah the fall into the push up is no longer performed because one of them got hurt doing it so the practice you saw was for MMA and they always change the performance slightly so they didn't have the dance break that was in the practice video in this particular performance, It's important that you do the dance practice for the particular performance or you will have these discrepancies. But watching that fall into the push up is always an unexpected treat..

this is great - don't worry about the length - we will stay for the whole thing because we are interested in your analysis and how it translates from practice to performance... the performance is a television 'comeback' stage (new songs are introduced as comebacks) ... and yes in their performance there is a drop sequence that they removed because two of the members got injuries, and they were doing this prior to going on tour for Love Yourself:Speak Yourself tour, this was their opening song and they couldn't risk the injury; you can find that concert performance on their Bangtantv channel on youtube or lots of fancams, some are quite good ... their practice video was for a MMA 2019 performance with that awesome dance break which is a rock intro related to their song N.O. which is why you don't hear the melody but the rock guitar & drum instrumentation ... Black Swan - several choices there is the Art performance which is the original release but danced by modern dance company from Slovenia, the first Black Swan performance version which was done on James Corden Show, the original MV version from BItHit Labels, the recent Jimmy Fallon version, and the comeback versions on the different Korean music shows, Music Bank, Inkigayo & MCountdown, and of course the choreography dance practice which really allows you to see how they move. The one on Jimmy Fallon was new for ARMY cause it was US television, on a very small set, and with a style most familiar to Jimin, but not usually danced by the other BTS members, so it was quite impactful for ARMY. Hard to choose which to react, all are beautiful and emphasizes something different, - but definitely should do the dance practice, the official one MV and of the lives (James Corden is my favorite). And I would still watch the art performance on your own, both music arrangement, film style and dance interpretation had us pondering how BTS was going to present & interpret as a 'pop, R&b, trap' kind of vibe. The art video was part of an art promotion project 'BTS Connect' last year.

It's funny how you said it has a god like feel, because each of them is representing a Greek God. In the 2019 MMA award performance the intro to "Dionysus" was stunning. You should watch that show. It's 37 minutes long but it does not feel like it. It's so epic. I don't care how long a video is as long as it is genuine, and you appreciate the work they put into their dancing.

I love these extended reactions / analyses! Thank you! Note: The Last Supper motif is intentional. BTS' recent era was based on Swiss psychologist & philosopher Carl Jung, who said one must have a Last Supper with one's ego. Combined with the Greek Dionysian imagery - Dionysus ushers in a sense of chaos & liberty - this choreography is perfect. The Performance Director is Mr. Sondeuk Son. Mr. Son has been with BTS since their humble beginnings, and continues to choreograph for them, as well as for other BigHit artists. My second favorite artist for choreo & performance is TXT. Please check them out 😊

By the way, the practice you watched was the extended version for an award show performance, so you didn't see the dance break because this performance was for new release performance when they promote to music shows. BTS promotes their new releases for 2 weeks in US (variety shows, radio and morning shows), then 2 weeks in Korea (music shows, press conference and a couple of interviews). Then, at the end of the year, the conceptualize performances for award shows and music festivals. They usually add something to their normal routines to make it different for each show.

Love the new format! I feel like I ended up getting more of your thoughts this way, which I appreciate. I really like hearing your thoughts re: rehearsal vs. performance. Re: Black Swan - there are a few different versions, and I actually recommend seeing ALL of them. There is a dance film of a contemporary (?) dance by MN Dance Company, live performances on both The Tonight Show & James Corden's late night show performed by BTS (this is the version you'll find rehearsal dance vids for), and there is an official MV that intercuts choreo with scenes filmed in a beautiful abandoned theatre in LA, which features BTS. While there are common themes in the choreo of all of these, some feature completely different choreo (esp. the dance film, which features an entirely different set of dancers). I would really love to hear your thoughts on both the contemporary(?) dance company's choreo & film AND BTS' performance. I'm interested to get your perspective on how each dance supports the music/lyrics, and how they do it differently. I hope that makes sense!

I agree, to fully appreciate BS all the versions you cited need to be explored, lyrics included. I used BSWAN as the focus of an integrated art experience. Factoids...there is such a thing as a Black Swan event. Swan Lake is one of the most beloved ballets, the Swan Theme is recognized the world over. My unit of study included the lyrics, the ART FILM (with the orchestrion), the James Cordon Live performance and the MVideo. There was even a short vocabulary lesson and an oragami experience. It was an energetic lesson for students and teacher alike, stay well.

I'm relatively new to kpop. Discovered BTS in 2018. The one thing I know is that Kpop is so much better then American pop. The music, lyrics, choreography, dancing, singing, production, camera work blows our artists out of the water. It's like going to a top tier Broadway musical with every song. America just can't imagine some other country being better then us at anything which is one of the reasons we are still rather oblivious to kpop. We've always held our artists up as the world standard but that is simply no longer true. Bang PD is right when he says we don't know how to put on a full production like they do in S. Korea. They are so effing good at it. If our artists are smart they'll clue in and take some lessons or eventually be left in the dust.

Wow love your reaction and sharing your experience and thoughts. This practice was specific to the Melon Music Awards and was the end of a very long set.... they literally turn the award shows in to a BTS concert.... IF you are interested, there are two links I am going to leave here.... the first is the official channel of BTS where they often share their personal camera view of the performance (you can often see camera operators in some of the shots, but it typically gives a pretty good straight on-ish view of the performance) and the second is the video of the broadcasted performance from the channel that the MMA was shown on with all the camera cuts and lighting and such. One note, is that the lighting for the live performance was a bit distracting and dark during the dance break, but that is why they give us the practice videos, to see the choreo in all its glory. Enjoy! It is so worth the view - keep in mind that "Mikrokosmos" and the solos were pre-recorded and broadcasted while the members did wardrobe changes - although most if not all of the members actually came out and mirrored the taped solo performances by performing for the audience until such time as they had to take their marks for the next truly live segment): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b9cG4DzpL_c.html

Regarding what version of Black Swan we want you to watch, I'll link you their dance practice, a performance (has subs) and an official video where it's another group who dances to the orchestral version of the song (different choreo, subs). Practice: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fTS1jAhWPbw.html Performance: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g1-sFn-j5D0.html Orchestral: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vGbuUFRdYqU.html "A dancer dies twice- once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." It's a song about the fear of loosing passion for music, something i believe any artists feels towards their craft.

The guy that begins the dance break after the "Last Supper" is JHope or Jung Hoseok. He is the lead dancer and main rapper in BTS. He is known for learning choreography within minutes after seeing it and teaching it to the rest of the group. Check out a segment he has called Hope on the Street. He also did a remake of Chicken Noodle Soup with Becky G.

I just wanted to say I appreciate you always throwing out compliments and notes on the whole crew of dancers and not just BTS themselves. Lots of people disregard the backup dancers, but you are obviously someone who knows how each person creates an impact. Thanks for that :)

Yeah, I'm sure you're not nearly as savage as their choreographer or the member J-Hope. When J-Hope, usually sunshine personified, turns into their dance taskmaster, all the other members tremble!

By the way, a very good reaction and analysis. Pls do more. BTS always claimed to be most difficult and complex choreography. Black Swan, suggest MV then dance Practice then perhaps Black Swan live on Jimmy Fallon BTS week show.

this is the MMA dance practice (over all a fucking 40min performance! at an award show!!) and they sampled one of their older aka debut songs into the dance break. oh dude I wish you would have watched it back then because everyone just collapsed when we were watching it live :D ! the awards show performance is on youtube and I hope you check it out (just for fun) because it was glorious to say the least

The live performance you watched was the comeback stage which is why it was shorter and had the full plank fall. The rehearsal you watched was for the MMA (of MAMA...) award show, which is why it was longer and bigger and by that point, they had changed the plank fall to the squats.

PLEASE REACT TO THEIR AWARD SHOW PERFORMANCE OF DIONYSUS!! that's the dance practice that you reacted and did analysis on. It was so satisfying to see their performance. The pushup position that they did in the performance that you watched was taken out as it could've potentially caused a stress fracture during performances (as it was in every performance that they did of Dionysus) so they decided to simplify it in order for it to be less stressful for the members. The awards show performance was after their debut of Dionysus.

“Six minutes, holy shit, quite the endurance” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ....when he realizes this is the end of a 30 minute performance. During this performance, which was in the middle of awards week in Asia (MMA, MAMA, Fact awards, etc) both Tae and Yoongi were injured. You missed something by not watching the MAMA performance of Dionysus, which was the choreography they did in the practice. Different stages and shows have different choreography. Tour is different from comebacks from MMA from MAMA.

i am saying this because you always seem to be amazed at their dance practices and seem to expect mistakes, but the "dance practice" videos are not actual practices. It's a whole new performance video in the shape of a practice video to showcase the dance. anyways, love your analysis
