For why the flute is so difficult (especially for beginners), in addition to the amount of air, I would also say that developing the embouchure and the core support for the airstream is a big challenge. It takes a while to learn how to consistently get a sound out the flute at all, and then years to learn how to get a good sound out of it. And then there's the intonation...

I've been working at Music & Arts for the last few years and I can say that most parents with daughters will often push them towards flutes/violins. Parents with sons push their kids more towards brass. Flute and violin are the instruments "for girls." It's really disheartening to hear a student say, "Dad I want to play the flute!" and the dad say, "Kid that's a girl instrument. Why not trombone?"

@@LemonadeLiberal I had one customer say, and I quote, "No kid of mine is going to play a sissy instrument," and my manager and I were so shocked we just blinked in absolute awe while the child begrudgingly decided that he would play the trumpet instead of the flute.

@@icantgetridofthisusernamehelp I was one of those kids many years ago that wanted to play the flute, but was pushed towards trumpet because "flute is a girls instrument!!!!" I went to a christian private school that was very conservative in pretty much every way. The band director really wanted me to play the trumpet for some reason. I thought the flute was a really cool instrument. Even the flute lesson teacher was a man. An even bigger kick in the gut was that a kid the year after me started playing flute at that school. Anyways, we go up to music and arts and my grandma buys a trumpet for me while I am eyeing the flute shelf the whole time. I still have never played a flute but I did also start playing sax in middle school. So now I play trumpet and sax. I'm very happy with the instruments I play now, but I think it would be very cool to eventually live out my childhood dream of playing the flute.

That is an interesting thing though which shows how times and opinions change over time. The flute was considered a really really manly instrument if we just go back a mere 120 years. It was even considered very unappropriated and unladylike to play the flute in the first half of the 19th century. Partly since they thought the flute had such a masculine tone. But also since you had to distort your lips way to much than was appropriate for young ladies.

@@coocoodog1232 Some good news for you if you aren't already aware of this though the breathing for flute and sax is different, the fingering is mostly the same. I play flute and sax (started on flute and later picked up sax) and once you get used to the breathing switching between the 2 is really easy, there's a reason some pit orchestration has a part that is for a dual flute and sax (the wizard of oz definitely has a part that is for tenor sax and flute).

Boehm also made the flute silver because concert halls started being made with organs and the sounds of the orchestra has to compete with the organ. This is also why there is a lack of recorder music from 1800-1900. The silver flute could be heard over the concert organ.
@sofiadahlen1187
@sofiadahlen1187 3 года назад
Where have you heard that? According to Boehm the main reason he started trying to build his 1847 Boehm flute (the flute we know now) is because he found wood less easy to work with compared to metal. He himself played mostly a wooden flute (though with an open G# compared to what most use now). According to his own essay in regards to why he developed the 1847 model instead us using his old 1832 one he states that the most important thing for a bigger freer sound that "The notes can only be developed with freedom and power when the holes are large, and bored as near as possible to their theoretically correct places".
@sofiadahlen1187
@sofiadahlen1187 3 года назад
The lack of recorder music has more to do (if we ask go by letters from the time) with the fact that the recorder can't play dynamics properly and has the same problems the one keyed traverso has when it comes to crossfingered notes being veiled. The recorder did not cease usage completely though but did survive as csakas which were recorders with extra keys. The recorder was in decline throughout the 18th century even.

I play mainly flute, but I'm okay at clarinet. I personally think clarinet is harder because you have to blow harder. Maybe I'm just used to blowing out a lot of air, but the air pressure on flute is pretty low compared to clarinet. Piccolo on the other hand....yeah... you need a much smaller embouchure and more air pressure. Playing clarinet definitely helped me with piccolo lol

Usually around two feet in length a kalaleng has holes cut in the side, to be stopped by the fingers producing the notes. I'm a violinist (and the other orchestral strings) but I love the flute. That's why I now have one. Pros: it's not heavy at all (even lighter than a violin), a melodic instrument (like the violin, my instrument), fun to play, is really easy to maintain (compared to the violin in my experience, don't @ me), and has a wide range of repertoire as a Melody instrument and a Harmony instrument (violin is built the same way). Cons: Extremely hard (especially if you have breathing problems like me, I have asthma), range is "limited" (it's not really open range, the notes you have are the ones you have), a very competitive instrument (like the violin), and (for me) hard to be expressive with it as the range is closed (no double-stops, glissandos, notes that are not in the 12 tone equal temperament system, none of that, it's closed unless you have a slide head joint which I can't find). All in all, the flute is a great instrument. It has a whole family and I can definitely approve giving it a try. I don't recommend it if you have breathing problems or a short temper though. Breathing problems: It might be hard to play long passages, and could possibly cause you to pass out in theory (although, this is possible to overcome, just be careful). Short tempered people: This is not an "easy" instrument. Like the violin, you'll probably mess up a lot to the point it is embarrassing and get mad and frustrated. This is possible to overcome, but I would go to some anger management classes first. If you're short-tempered but you still want to play the flute I recommend the recorder. It's not too hard to pick up (an "easy" instrument), and can be easily replaced if you break it (cheap ones aren't that good though, so beware of extremely cheap plastic ones), and it's a lot more expressive (although I prefer common flutes more). If you want to know more about the recorder, just go to Sarah Jeffery/Team Recorder. Also recorder players, I know, the recorder isn't easy, that's why it's in quotation marks, and in my opinion, compared to violin, it's not too hard, especially since I have a recorder as well and can back myself up, so don't @ me. Edit: You can also play the tin whistle if you want to play the recorder but don't want to play the recorder.

I'm a little late to the party, but I have something to add.... When I was 12 my grandmother offered to pay for lessons on whatever instrument I chose. (I had had piano lessons earlier, but they didn't "stick.") I never considered anything other than flute. It was only after I got into high school band that I discovered that flute (and piccolo), oboe and low brass were the only band instruments whose parts were written in "concert" key. My mother (a pianist) had discovered when I was about 5 years old that I had perfect pitch. If I had chosen an instrument where the pitch did not match the notes on the page, it would have driven me NUTS. In college a couple of times I was handed an alto flute to play on one piece of music. The only way I could do it was stare at the page and finger the notes I saw, and NOT LISTEN to the sound I was making. Later they gave the alto flute to another player who was not encumbered with perfect pitch.

I'm fascinated by the different perspectives! In Italy (where nowadays the musical upbringing is akin to that of a hamster) the flute is very popular because it's considered an easy instrument (and also fairly cheap). Almost everyone who can produce a sound with an open bottle can produce a "sound" with a flute... they don't seem to realize that the sound they produce is awful, out of tune and that taking a breath every two notes is not musical (but again... If you're an hamster do you really listen to what you do?)... the flute had this (dis)advantage. Fairly easy to play immediately, very difficult to do it WELL. The same with the price, it has a great range of prices but if you aren't choosy, a student's flute can be very affordable. I think it makes the flute very loved and underestimated at the same time.

I think it is either because they may be a little more complicated in production, but especially because rather a little more experienced players do play open-holed flutes and they would more likely buy flutes which are higher quality than student flutes, so a little bit more expensive. So I think it is not about the open holes themselves but who would buy an open- oder closed-hole flute. (Just my personal thesis haha)

Thanks for that response! That’s something I definitely want to look into and interests me(for some reason).

@@cattymionepotter1939 Some student flutes can have open holes, they are just rare. Open hole allows for some extended techniques like multiphonics and microtones. The issue I see with it is that the open holes need to be adapted to, which is why all open hole flutes come with little bits to close off those holes until a flautist can use it. There is going to be a little bit more resistance as well, and leaking does occur if the holes aren't covered properly. But like you said, it does come down to the player and their opinion.

That wiki-article is a bit misleading though in regards to who made the first metal flute. The first metal flute I think is hard to pinpoint exactly. But it is known the the maker George Miller made a metal flute in 1810 when he patented his cylindrical metal flute. But there is a possibility of one even earlier example that I don't know of.

Why flutes are so popular? One of reason could be that the flute (recorder) typically is the first instrument which children has to deal with when they are starting at school - unless parents of the child have chosen strings or pianos.

People say it is hard to get a signed out of the float when first playing as soon as I blew across the headjoint I was able to play it when I first picked it up and playing it is a bit like a recorder of the notes as such so it was easy

well...I always hated the recorder because it was impossible for me to learn as a kid....your video led me to get a cheapo and have another go, and right now I can kinda play 3 songs (partially) after two weeks and not even playing every day...serious flites are expensive sure, but you can get a beginner guitar for $10 or so like you can a recorder...

Ohh, and a fun-fact about flutist being good kissers! There was a belief in the beginning of the 20th century that kissing made you a bad flute player, and that that was (according to one author) one of the main reasons why soo few women played the flute. Since they would have to choose between kissing and playing the flute.

tl;dr at the end I feel like a more direct answer to the first question is because the flute has a cork in the headjoint, as do all the other woodwind instruments. The ends of the clarinet pieces are cork, the top of a saxophone is cork, and with english horns, bassoons, and oboe, it's same, with the additional cork on their double reed. A brass instrument, however, has no wood to be found. Its fully metal, excluding the padding underneath the valve keys, or for a french horn, the back of the valves. tl;dr: A flute has a cork like all other instruments. Brass instruments dont have corks.

I picked the flute because the music school my parents enrolled me in didn’t have the harp available. 😂 I’m happy with the choice little 5 year old me made tbh.

The flute is by no means easy to play. As a clarinetist who is trying to expand their instrument repitior, it took me a while week just to figure out how to even get a sound out of the flute using just the head joint. Compared to how long it took me to get a sound out if the saxophone (about 1 minute), I think the flute is pretty difficult to play

the flute is popular, because of persons like galway who played in famous films... and ofc the pop references (idk if I like how it is portrayed there tho)...

I chose to learn flute not knowing that it is one of the few band instruments keyed in C. Most of the other instruments in the band are keyed elsewhere, B flat or E flat, and I would have had trouble with one of those because the notes on the page would not be the notes I was hearing. Just one of the drawbacks of having perfect pitch....
