Within an African context, that amount of tillage equipment on one farm is rarely seen other than with large scale farmers. With an average smallholding of two Hectares, many African governments have opted for a top-down approach whereby governments encourage rich farmers to purchase often subsidized high horsepower tractors and implements and offer contracting services in their area. The standard government package is a sixty horsepower tractor a three-disc plough, a disc harrow, and a trailer. In practice, the disc harrow is ignored as the intention is to plough as many acres as possible, the practice of ploughing a field then removing the plough and fitting the disc harrow then removing the harrow and refitting the plough and going on to the next farm rarely happens

Very interesting. I am endeavouring to go into farming and I have purchased an MF 265, I inherited a mouldboard plough from my late father and 16 gang disk that was on an MF 3080. I have recently also purchased a 3 disk plough because I was led to believe that it is much better than a mouldboard plough. I find that it is quite difficult to get accurate information about agriculture as people have varying degrees of opinions on equipment and practices. Is there a site which would have a standardized set of instructions and equipment for a small farmer such as myself?

@@user-ki9ez8wx7f I have recently purchased an area of bush in Eastern Tanzania which we intend to farm. I am avoiding the disc plough and instead intend to purchase a Piket two-row No-Till planter from South Africa. We will plant maize as a cash crop inter sown with beans and trial plots of Sunflower, Banana, and Cassava. We intend to keep the maize and process it through our own hammermill to add value.

hello sir, i like to become maize farmer. here is a questions to you. these days on professional farmers i do not see peolple on farms to hand hoe weeds. what happens in that regard. again how is top dressing done on maize because these days it seems that maize is planted very close to one another in such a way that the tractor won`t be able to get in to the field after plantation. m.b.s moshitoa (s africa)
