him and his team have already mentioned that they don’t try to make a commercially successful record, just whatever feels right and is fun. so unfortunately his self-titled album didn’t get much radio play or recognition. ‘Sign of the Times’ definitely deserved a grammy and Rolling Stones even named it #49 on the best 100 songs of the century!
however, both his albums have debuted at #1 and 'Fine Line' stayed at #1 for 2 weeks :) and since december has been in the top 20 until just recently. he is definitely something special!!

this was the show opener!!!! his entire tour! haha!! and it's soooo epic! cuz he has these lights and the energy is insane! and there's a live version that he did at the victorias secret fashion show, there's one he did for his "behind the album" where he performed all the songs off his first album at abbey road studios, there's one he performed at the bbc, and there's a bunch of fan-taken ones at his live shows that show the dope ass opening/entrance! i genuinely don't know which one would be the best, but they're definitely all really good!
As you (and others) mentioned, you're right - he did open with Only Angel and closed with Kiwi (although with a different more "growly"(?) sound from the band at start to Kiwi - I love it even more than the studio version opening). For Only Angel, you can find fan recordings from concerts where you see the screens lift up and lights shine through like "Heaven" as the show starts. Pretty cool effect with the song - especially in person. Doesn't always translate well through the phone recording. This is one of my favorites, too! Happy listening!

pop stations aren't going to play this and the rock and alt stations won't because Harry's an ex-boybander. i've always thought Harry and his bandmate Louis would be great on rock/alt radio but they are from a boyband and they don't get the chance. closest Harry's gotten is Adore You charting on Adult Contemporary. it sorta sucks
Adore You topped the Pop charts and is still in the top 5. Did well on Hot AC as well. And Watermelon Sugar is currently in top 20 on Pop. So not just AC. (In U.S. - I can't speak to other markets)
As a fellow musician, I’ve only been into rock for the longest time. It wasn’t until last year that I REALLY started to branch out and listen to everything, including Harry styles and even 1 Direction, which I never thought I’d ever say. Even my bandmates and friends are like “dude you sure you’re not gay?” or “you’re literally so obsessed with him”. To be honest, he’s my favorite artist at the moment because, like you said, he’s incredibly versatile. And don’t be worried about blasting Harry Styles in the car and being obnoxious. Every day I go out it’s all I blast along with Zeppelin, Sabbath, and all of the other greats lmao
It made me so excited watching how excited you got by listening to this song. I can still remember the first time I heard it, and I was totally blown away. To me it's simply a perfect song, and I love, love, love the style! He's such an incredible artist. And you're spot on when it comes to this as the opening song and Kiwi as the closing one! Best thing about Harry’s music/songs is hearing the different kinds of instruments and sounds that you don’t hear often now on today’s music and I just love seeing you react & geek out over the sounds and Harry’s voice😊🙌
You're right it didn't get a lot of radio play. His songs don't actually get a lot of radio play despite being massive successes. The only songs of his I've heard of his on the radio are Sign of the times on his last album and Adore you on his latest album. I'm sure I'll start seeing Watermelon Sugar high soon. I won't lie I want you to put it in line because I want to see you react to the live Graham Norton performance but honestly do the one you're feeling really strongly about. I’ve seen some other people mention it, and I know you’ve already watched two Kiwi videos, but I would HIGHLY recommend you react to him singing Kiwi three times (KIWI KIWI KIWI). It really shows how much of an amazing performer he is. He did it three times in a row on his last concert of tour without any breaks and the crowd was crazy. He has asthma and you could tell just how exhausted he was but he still gave the entire performance(s) so much energy. I wish I was there to see it live!

I saw a lot of people suggesting you react to the Victoria’s Secret fashion show performance but I think you’d love the tour version a lot more because it has so much energy and he goes all out (for the vs one it was a bit more toned down because obviously he can’t take the attention away from the fashion show and he’s stuck in one place), or if you want a studio version he opens his behind the album documentary singing only angel and that one is also much better than the vs one

Not only did he open with Only Angel, but also, his shows were 360 (MSG 360 was incredible), so he had this whole screen that went around the circular stage and slowly lifted as the intro played, and when the song finally started the lights and smoke went crazy and he started jumping around (he has an incredible aura and energy on stage, it’s mesmerising to see) Look up one of his shows, there’s so much footage online. It was amazing! Also, Kiwi has an intro as well, it just isn’t ok the album. If you wanna watch a good performance of Only Angel and the Kiwi intro, he performed both at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2017
I’m all for listening to Harry’s music turned up obnoxiously loud. I didn’t know there was another way to listen, honestly. I’m wishing you would do the album reaction before Tiny Desk only because Tiny Desk features versions of songs found on Fine Line. You really should listen to the debut album first. It’s all good but that takes you on the journey many of us took that followed his career out of 1D. I love it all so I will be here no matter what order you end up choosing. Only Angel to open the arena tour was epic and you could feel the excitement in the room build. Did you check the updated tour dates to catch him live in 2021?

One of the comments mentioned you should watch his live performance of this show during the Victoria Secrets show , I agree it was amazing
You're incredible :D Indeed, this was his show opener during the 2018 live on tour, and Kiwi was (still is) his show closing song most of the time. You really should see him performing these songs live. Prancing , jumping, running all around the stage. It's a great rock song, this is why so many of us suggested it to you. It's among my top3 favorite Harry Styles-songs. I can't resist to dance most of the time when I'm hearing it. Unfortunately it was not a hit, because he never released it as a single... It's good that you first listened to the audio only, as the sound quality is the best. All other live versions (except the Abbey Road studio version) are uploaded by fans. Eventhough some cases the quality is enjoyable, but naturally far away from a live performance recorded in a studio. Here's the link once again to the Abbey Road performance. Awesome reaction. This song is one of my favourites from the album. Live is always best so if you can react to a live version I would recommend the Victoria Secret version as it's a professional recording (he also does kiwi live here).
woo bonus episode knew you’d love this song!! and yes he used to open shows with it! the screen would rise up during the intro it was always so epic. i’m not sure if i would recommend reacting to a live performance though. there aren’t that many good ones in my opinion. he performed it for the victoria secret fashion show (as well as kiwi) but obviously the focus is more on the models than him so it can be a bit frustrating if you’re watching for the song. maybe watch them in your own time rather than recording? i would definitely say that you need to react to sign of the times at the graham norton show asap though!! it will be a backtrack from tiny desk as it was his first solo single but will set up the more rock/70s sound he went for with his first album. and then maybe from there you can do the full album reaction to HS1?

If you wanna check it out live i think there are two major ones - The one live at the BBC and one live in studio which is from his Behind The Album film that they recorded at Abbey Road Studios. I'm not sure if that one is on youtube, but it's on apple music, or you can probably just google Harry Styles Behind The Album. It's the first song he plays.

As many have mentioned, he did open with Only Angel when he did his large concert tour for the first album and there are some decent quality videos of it in concert that I think capture the vibe better than the recording that he did for the BBC tv special. You get the experience of the stage screens lifting up to reveal Harry as the show starts just like you were thinking. It's interesting to compare the recording to the live version and how he added some small changes to the song (good example live is on Graham Norton Show) Side note - before Harry did his main tour, he did a small venue tour for the first album hitting up places like the Troubadour, Ryman Aud., Radio City MH, Massey Hall, etc. For that tour, he opened with Ever Since New York (a slower song) and had a more classic curtain drop. Kiwi ended the main set, but Sign of the Times was the closer for the night.
This is my favorite off of self titled! My neighbors probably hated me for putting it on loop in full volume lol. Though I have to say, I love listening the recorded more because it's so eargasmic lol. Concert fancams are great if you wanna watch it live, then the Victoria Secret fashion show and BBC performance for professionally filmed ones. Great review!
It's one of my favorite songs - I think the problem with it is that is too rock and roll and Harry is type-casted as a "pop" singer and played on only those types of radio stations. I kept hoping that one of the Sirius rock stations would pick up on this song or Kiwi but Harry doesn't get respect there. He did open shows with it - I can't remember if it was the little tiny arena tour or the big arena tour. I think it was the latter.
