This has lots of parallels to singing in choirs, too! I actually love rehearsals, though (I often think, “rehearsal is over already?”), and I’m really sad that the beer bug has stopped all rehearsals and performances. As for singing passionately, the problem is-especially during performances-if I focus too much on the beauty of the poetry and music I’ll end up getting very emotional, and if singers get emotional they’ll often cry, which makes it impossible to sing well. So, if I want to put on a “passionate” performance, I have to focus on the technical aspects and detach myself from the music and the lyrics, and just pretend to be passionate with my face. Singing has been described as “acting on pitch,” and that’s often what I have to do. Also, it’s a death sentence to forget to bring your pencil to rehearsal in choir rehearsals, especially if the choir is really high-level.

Tbh we need more respect for the cellos and double bases Back when I was in the orchestra the conductor didnt have a baton so he used a drum stick and boy when he got mad because the accompaniment parts weren’t ✨dynamically flawless✨enough he threw the thing right at this cello dude and it hit him square in the face & almost knocked the cello out of his grip everyone didn’t get why the cellos always looked like they were on the verge of death back then but now that I think of it I guess it’s pretty hard to stay enthusiastic when the fastest note you can play as a cello in orchestra are quavers Like tremolos do get boring after a few bars, but at least we’re moving quick imagine playing quavers of the same note in largo for 30 mins when you can play 15 notes a second 🤦‍♀️

Once when our orchestra was very short on basses but had plenty of qualified cellists, some at a very high level, we asked our principal cellist to play bass for one concert. He teaches and plays it well, but when it was over he said, "Never again. Too boring!" I feel for bassists. I mark their music (am the librarian) and it's sooooo boring. I can mark a whole section's music in about a quarter of the time it takes to do violins, for the same number of parts (our basses don't share stands).

I had a childhood ambition to become a professional symphony player. That's what nerved me to take up violin studies and go on to complete a degree in performance. But at 21 y/o, I decided I didn't want to do orchestra anymore, and I haven't since then. I had trained heavily for this occupation up to that point; but several negatives turned me off to it: 1) long evening hours -- I'm not a nightperson; 2) lack of individual freedom and creativity; 3) high decibel levels in some modern symphonic scores. So I bowed out. No regrets. Now I enjoy practicing and playing a lot more. I listen to orchestral music a great deal but no longer have any desire to play in an orchestra.

Sad thing about this video is that this monotony and routine relates also to this occupation. One would thought it's always sweet as honey.. I don't think I'm actually glad to hear that musicians get weary about what they do too. I preferred to imagine I carry the burden of getting bored sometimes with what I do on my own, so that other people do not have to. But hey, it seems the only thing we can do in every job is to find ourselves a little challenge every day. Something, a small thing, to wait impatiently for right from when you open your eyes in the morning. 😉
