i followed your instructions and painted the tails on my 2012 altima. i used red vht instead of black, and meguilars compound and polish. also i had to manually buff in the compound and polish. even with those changes, the lights look AWESOME. thank you for describing the process. i followed your steps and they came out perfect. anyone looking to paint their tails just follow this guide and youll be successful. thanks again for making this.
Well done, good explanations and visuals on why sanding gives that extra smooth finish. A light touch sanding just makes the compounding/polishing portion only needing a light touch also, less risky for burning through. Really great video, thank you!
What a GREAT video!!!! I had seen this already, but thinking I got mine too black, I decided to see if I could remove the clearcoat, then the VHT with brake fluid. I started by sanding the clearcoat with 600 wet, but wasn't getting very far. Then I looked at it and saw the "orange peel" affect, and realized I had just completed the 1st step of this video, so I changed course and sanded 2000 wet, then proceeded with the rest from here, and WOW, they don't look so black anymore and I managed the same reflection as you did! THANKS again for the method and instruction!!!
Followed this extremely well explained video and my 16 Lexus IS 350 tail lights turned out beautiful!!! The mirror super smooth finish it’s amazing!!! Thx again brotha!!!
Yours came out great, but I have watched a guy that does it for a living for more than 10 years and I have never seen him sand anything and it comes out PERFECT No orange peel look.
the orange peel is there. No way to avoid it. Might not show up on video, but it's there. Even if it's not, it will look BETTER wet sanded and compounded and polished.
Man what an awesome video. I did my lights exactly like you said and wow they turned out amazing. Funny story just like you after I got the final coat of clear on I had to put my lights back on before they were totally dry. But I did the final sand and stuff and you would never know. Thanks man
I have found that with fresh clear with 30-60 minutes of cure time you can use 1000 or 1500 grit sand paper then hit it with a heat gun and all the samding marks go away and you end with a super glossy finish.

Great video bro! I made my lights like this today and I sprayed 5 times the black spray and it was really dark lol I couldn’t see much of the light but a red dot lol so i had to re done everything all over and I only sprayed it 3 times and they came out great! Great vlog insightful in saying that can you please go over some other issues first issue I've done Nightshade on a bunch of my vehicles and I always get it to be a high gloss finish without clear coat but I make it a lot darker second why are you using enamel clear is it because the product is enamel based I thought the product was a lacquer base third eye also noticed that if you send it down Waiter on a month to even three down the road it will spiderweb and crack for whatever reason you pretty much got to strip it all off and start over have you ever experienced love

I know this is old but to anyone doing this…..Wet out your tint coats after the tack coat and it will reduce orange peel. Don’t wet sand the tint. spray a couple clear coats and then wet sand the clear followed by a final wet coat. This way you eliminate any risk of burning through the tint layers.
A lot of that orange peel/extra work was from the way you sprayed both products. Too far away, and too close in proximity to each other (overspray). But good effort for the end result, they look awesome.
Great video, good information, theres different ways and methods to do this but this is a great beginner to intermediate way to get it done. Thank you sir for the video
add a porter cable 7424xp to your tool selection. the polished acrylic would have already wafting for wax. You need one for your cars anyway if you like them to look sharp End product shows that you aint finished, more rubbing, say it....rubbing oB oB
Will drop a like just for showing people how to do this the right way, I cant even tell you how many of my friends have come to me to fix their lights because they did not think it would need sanding... the results will suck if you don't wet sand and buff these
Great step by step video. I always seen horrible results with the chat spray. I'm assuming because after the spray it was never followed with the compound and polish which is what makes the project night and day difference. Thanks again. And God bless your beautiful daughter. Maybe a few more times her watching u right there she'll be doing the tinting herself better than you. Lol
Great video, thank you! I do like blacking out things, don't get me wrong, but I've always wondered why people make their taillights (and brake lights) darker and therefore harder to see by other drivers. Isn't the whole idea to be SEEN on the road? So that other drivers know A - you are there, B - you are braking, C - you are turning. I really like my truck, I have done many mods and will continue but I also don't want to be hit from behind (again) because someone couldn't see my dark taillights. I guess I care more about my truck and my body than the cool factor.
I was at six minutes and I was really doubting the process but boy was I wrong, that came out so solid. I am about to pick up an Evo 8 and wanted to look into alternatives to $200 tail lights, which wax sealer did you go with?
The tail lights look pretty Nice, i have to say. But wouldnt it have been mich easier, faster and probably cheaper to just have wrapped them with smoke tint vinyl? With such straight shaped lights, it would be very easy to install too! Thumbs up for your effort though! Greetings from the Netherlands
Can you give an update please? I noticed by your plate you are in Iowa, and im sure the harsh winters, road salt and stuff are the same and Michigan where im at. Any maintence or is the original still looking good. Thanks
Professionally done ✅, i had one question which im struggling since this week, so i used VHT on my tail light done uh not bad , but ive covered my bumper all that plastic car parts but still vht spray dripped down, can u please tell how to remove that spray off from paint rear bumper and trunk
Great video thank you for sharing. Do you think 2 coats would be enough for it to be uniform? Or should I do 3 and sand a lot? How easily does the VHT sand off if I put too much? I’m just looking for a very light smoke, don’t want them too dark.
If I finish following the steps, and I decide I want the tail lights to be darker after the polish, can I just west sand them and go over it with another layer of VHT and clear coat? Or do I need to remove all of it?
I don’t know if you will be able to help with this but I saw a 2008 charger with the tail lights tinted but the reverse lights and brake light circles weren’t tinted...I can easily tell where to put the take on the reverse lights but I can’t figure out how to do the brake light circle cut outs. This comment would be easier if I could show you the concept
