Reason for the front foot knuckle and dew claws closer to hoof, kneeling down, versus back legs being laid backwards, and knee further up, same for dew claws. Same designs in the cats and dog species with paws and legs.

I've had a lot of people tell me that a monster buck is in the area just because the dew claws touched. One guy showed me and it was in mud. The tracks even had some skid marks in them (a slip in the mud). Another hunter and I had a debate in the woods on which of us shot a deer (bow and area). He did not understand about the tracks and it was useless to try to explain. The proof was not even in the 50 yard blood trail since he didn't want to walk up the hill to where it was first shot. The way he finally admitted that it was mine is that I was in a tree stand and he was on the ground. So the angle of the arrow was diagonally through the deer. Oh, he had shot at it, missed, and it stopped under me. When I arrowed it, it ran down the hill between us. It was just over a hump from me. I enjoyed that lesson. It's good to here people not telling tales. I find that just tracking can be relatively hard just due the the ground conditions. And I love the snow tracking (easy and I can be relatively lazy. :)

If deer steep into their own tracks when walking how can you tell front from back?

Looking at deer feet don't tell much. The way a deer puts it's foot down, as in a buck will often walk with his toes pointing out slightly. The length of stride and the stagger of the track will also indicate a buck or doe. A buck has a broader chest so is tracks will be spaced wider apart. And being a bigger deer with a longer body will makes his stride longer than a doe. There is so much more to it than a couple measurements

I guess the "insight" I was hoping for was simply, is the animal i'm tracking one I hope to shoot, how far ahead of me is he if it is, how fast/slow is he moving so I know how fast/slow to move. It was a fun video, but I guess I missed what value it had in getting me on a deer I want to or can shoot.

By the tracks, how would you determine if the tracks are from a female or a male? Would a young buck look similar to a older doe?

Awesome video. Very informative. I once saw a large deer track so impressive I had to measure it. It was 6 -1/4 inches tip to dew claw and was not sure of the size of the deer. I now see that it depends on whether it was the front or rear foot.
