"It is very unfortunate that communal riots take place from time to time in our country. We as a nation have to make up our mind and have a firm determination that these things must never occur. But if there are any problems arising out of the past, some people feel that they have not been adequately compensated, I don't know if we can compensate I think for the loss people have suffered, but whatever relief can be provided if there is additional scope then we will explore all avenues and I mean it....that applies not only to 1984, that applies also to the tragic events of Gujrat, which have brought I think a great deal of anguish and as a nation I think which reflected poorly on us. These things must never happen."

STORYLINE :
India's new prime minister Manmohan Singh is a soft-spoken, Oxford and Cambridge-educated economist, widely known as the architect of India's economic reforms and a respected political consensus builder.
Singh was named prime minister of India on Wednesday, ending weeks of political turmoil that culminated with Sonia Gandhi's refusal to take the post.
Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born widow at the head of the country's most powerful political dynasty, turned down the prime minister's job but remained leader of the Congress party, which ousted the Hindu-nationalist party of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in recent national
elections.
Singh is the first Sikh to lead the government since its independence from Britain in 1947, and is a veteran of Indian politics.
