Was attending a speaking public appearance of the man himself this past Monday. Such a wonderful person with more insight on film that i could ever imagine. He was so polite to questions and really gave everyone attending some amazing stories and fantastic tips on filming. Don't think i will ever get another chance to see him and i am glad got to see one of the most legendary filmmakers of all time.

Malone and Mantz, just a superb show! That interview was such a twist, totally unexpected for me, just phenomenal. I geeked out last week with the interviews but you just had the one this week, which was more than enough and absolutely blew my mind. Congratulations and thanks for this episode.

YES! I'm so happy you mentioned John Cazale and I Knew It Was You. I remember seeing that on HBO years ago and having more appreciation for him as an actor, and the way he can flat out steal a scene. To me he is one of the most underrated and under-appreciated actors of all time. Great show BTW.

This is so great. My Coppola first blood was The Outsiders when I was 7 years old. I loved it. But the first Coppola film I saw that I knew he directed was The Godfather Part 1. Saw It when I was 13 and it absolutely changed my life and made me love movies even more than I already did. Wonderful interview, and keep up the amazing work, you two!

I rented The Godfather at Blockbuster around 1989. Once I saw it, I immediately ordered part I and II through The Columbia VHS Club and watched them both over and over. Those two movies really got me interested in seeking out the films of great filmmakers. Coppola is one of the best. Great episode.

Awesome show! As you guys were discussing the progression of Capt. Willard's journey into an surreal Vietnam, I was thinking about the parallels from my reading experience with Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Conrad does with sentence structure what Coppola does with surrealism. As the reader delves further and further into the African jungle the sentences get longer and longer. It forces the eye to go back to the beginning of a sentence creating a maze for the eye. I love to watch the corruption spread in the Godfather movies as well. Michael tells so many lies it is amazing he can keep them all straight. He lies to his wife, to congress, and he lies with a hug at his own mother's funeral to the only immediate family he has left. The most chilling scene for me is the last one of Part II. Hearing the sound of his brother's murder, there is Michael all powerful and all alone.

I love your profiles podcast. I'm so glad you guys started doing this. my favorite so far has to be the kubrick profile. would you guys ever consider doing Alfonso Cuaron? my favorite science fiction film and is definitely in my top 10 favorite films of all time has to be children of men. I get this feeling had the film been a success at the box office he would've had more recognition at the oscars. but I'm happy gravity finally nailed him a win.

Respect. Your guest list has already been impressive to me. Matthew Modine from Full Metal Jacket! But honestly how can't Coppola the Director of Apocalypse Now, the original Vietnam Epic that inspired it and Platoon? Not to mention the rest of Francis Ford Coppola's resume of The Godfather trilogy, Outsiders, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Conversation, Captain EO, Rumble Fish, Jack, The Rainmaker, Peggy Sue Got Married, Youth Without Youth, Twixt, and even the Cotton Club. Once because they are all great films and also so versatile and diverse from each other. He has also diversified his career with the Vineyard and Wine Making, Producing and just Patriarch of his extended family tree from Actors to Directors like himself. I love Sofia's work a whole lot and Roman has a very experimental style of filmmaking which is great too, those are the pioneers, even if he doesn't have blockbusters and Oscars for it. Nic Cage is beyond Superstar status by now, Jason Scwhartzman, and Talia Shire all great actors. Even ex In-Law Spike Jonze gained notoriety as did Wes Anderson. Ok, Wes Anderson only because he probably got his bump because of his brotherhood with Jason Schwartzman, so therefore by proxy so did Owen and Luke Wilson. While I'm at it might as well throw in Michel Gondry, Charlie Kaufman. I think they all deserve him at least a pound of credit each off where they are, what they made is all their own, just the recognition and boost and most importantly the opportunity to at least get in the door to pitch their projects to the right people right? He is the Godfather of Hollywood, maybe other guys were more action packed like Michael Corleone but Francis is Vito forever. He's dignified, jovial, warm, thoughtful, intelligent, masterful with the lens and storytelling, and represented classic Hollywood Film in the modern era again. I think the torch got passed on because of him to people like David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Soderbergh, David O. Russell, Alejandro Inarritu, and Alfonso Cuaron. Because none of them make the same film or subject matter really. Also they are extremely visually talented auteurs of film. He also immediately paved the way for his peers and contemporaries as you mentioned like Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese, De Palma, Nicholson, Pacino, DeNiro, Harrison Ford, James Caan, Robert Duval, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen and Charlie Sheen(probably also considered like family).

Excellent! I got chills toward the end of your chat with FFC when it started becoming obvious on your faces what just happened. That said.. Scott, did you say the horses name was Cartoon? I may be mistaken, but I'm fairly certain the horses name is Karthoum (sp?), an Arabic inference, which is common with horse names.

Coppola used golden aged techniques for Bram Stokers Dracula. His visual effects team told him that the things he wanted to achieve were impossible so he fired them. He hired his 29 year old son at the time Roman Coppola (who played young Sonny in Godfather 2), to do the "old-school" cinematic trickery. One example of this is when Harker is shaving and Dracula approaches him from behind without a reflection in the mirror. The actor with his back to the camera is actually Keanu Reeves double and the 'mirror' is simply a hole in the wall, with the real Keanu Reeves standing on the other side
