Profoto recently introduced their first light for the cinema market: the Profoto L1600D Cinema LED. Their first LED light is a compact 1600W daylight fixture with a new water-cooling system and without a ballast or floor unit, making it easy to carry. We were at Cine Gear 2024 and talked to Patrik Bluhme from Profoto, who was kind enough to share with us some additional information about this new fixture. Let’s take a look!

They are entering a highly competitive and mature market where the old guard has already been disrupted by Nanlite/Aputure. Yes there are unique features but I honestly see the all-in-one unit as a drawback. The swivel yoke looks kinda cool if it's sturdy. But at the end of the day. They don't have the ecosystem, they have no footprint, they are overpriced and there are lights from Nanlite/Aputure that has them beaten on all relevant parameters...

To be fair,... i prefer external power ... it's easier to change if stops working. modular, better. 8000$ tho...

I saw this with their launch video a few days ago before there was any pricing and thought they better not be approaching this the way they approach the photo market, thinking their place there has any translation into the cinema space…oh man did they ever prove they can’t get out of their own way! So incredibly tone deaf and ignorant to the fact that they are a newbie to this market. You are NOT a high-end supplier in the cinema market and you will NOT capture or be competitive against those in the high-end space with your first product. They are being so stupid to approach this market as if they were in the photo space competing against Broncolor, they aren’t. The way that needed to approach this was going after Aputure and Nanlite, competing on capabilities and price, they didn’t, they thought let’s go against ARRI! 🤣🤦🏼‍♂️ Their only customers at that price point are existing high end Profoto equipped photographers looking at getting into some constant lights for either photography or some studio video work. This has no hope I suspect in the actual cinema space.
