This was a great system in 1979 for learning how a microprocessor-based computer worked from a hardware perspective. It gave great appreciation for how an assembler worked. I remember spending many classroom lab sessions hand-assembling code in my notebook.

Mine is a 3400A also but I did not get the expansion memory nor the ability to store programs on a cassette. THAT is a nice feature!!! I was pleased that mine still worked after all these years, considering I built it, soldering part-by-part. Lots of fun… Thanks for showing this…

Nice show. I'm about to re-start the course too with my trainer and accessory. Also will use audacity or the like for quick audio editing. For demo though, fun to use cassette recorder. (Or my Otari with 12" reels:)) Related items to catch up on is my Ohio Scientific c2-4p and Heathkit Hero 1 robot, all with cassette inputs. Thanks

Excellent video. I just got a Multitech Microprofessor MPF-1a Z80 trainer and am having loads of fun learning how to program it. Is the big box underneath the trainer board the power supply?

I was reminiscing and decided to look up some of the old info on this. I found the manual here, with the schematics. The scans are less than ideal as the original schematics were big fold-outs, so you'll need to print this and paste them back together. archive.org/details/HeathkitManualForTheEt-3400MicroprocessorTrainer Rupert Avery wrote an emulator in C# to run on Windows: sharp6800.codeplex.com/ Source for the emulator is on Github: github.com/RupertAvery/sharp6800 Alas, the emulator doesn't give you the feel of building your own digital I/O using the protoboard on the trainer, and that was half the fun. But you can do that more easily now with many cheap prototyping kits, notably the Raspberry Pi.
