Fellow R user her. As a statistician / data analyst it is very nice and easy to work with. Probably using 50% R and 50% Python these days, with the remaining 50% being SQL, and maybe 5-10% C++.
@@segueoyuri My experience with MatLab ended at being given an old code that probably did the task 10 years ago but is now broken beyond my understanding, which I decided to rewrite, and rewritten code was too good. Because in MatLab code there was a specific combination of parameters that was not creating too many discrepancies with theory
it's funny how C# gets such a bad rep, be it as a programming language or its image but in reality it's so much better, more versatile and evolving than quite some other languages (especially Java)
But 1) Very confusing project structure and not flexible 2) Locks you inside the OOP thing (at least Python and C++ let you go functional if you want) 3) It is so tied to Microsoft products that no one from other OSes wants to use it 4) Most "native" extensions like UI toolkits only work on Windows
Oh my god the Scala guy is on point. He lures you in with a sweet sweet sample of beautiful functional programming. So shiny, so smooth! You take in it and it makes you feel great. Fast forward a month and you're trapped. The inital high is gone, all you can feel is the daily pain of *implicits*, inscrutable type juggling errors, a build system and language that makes the entirety of javascript feel simplistic, a million inscrutably overloaded operators, compile times breaking the physical laws of time dilation and all the while your computer fans are spinning on max for every character you type in the IDE. Not even once
Implicits were reworked in Scala 3 - you should give it another try! :) It's a very elegant and expressive language that doesn't sacrifice productivity. I think that there isn't anything else that feels as fun when writing simple scripts, while also giving you the confidence to make changes in large codebases when working on highly-available distributed systems or big data pipelines.

Julia can do macros like rust, metaprogramming like lisp, linear algebra like matlab, natively supports gpu parallelization. It has 1 based indexing though
They knew that 1-based indexing was a mistake, so they made the indexing overly flexible and brought in a ton of bugs that will likely never get fixed. No thanks.
1-based indexing is not a big deal. Julia has a interface to access the elements of a collection without using numbers directly, like: eachindex(array), first(array), last(array), array[begin], array[end]. You get used to it pretty quickly, unless you're the type of developer that only likes to complain instead of getting the job done
@@nullpointer1755 Nope. 0-based indexing is objectively superior, just like half-open ranges. Edsger Dijkstra himself put the matter to rest like 40 years ago. This is actually a big deal since, beyond the fact that using the wrong convention encourages bugs to begin with, it hurts portability between julia and saner languages, which means the language will likely never take off. Furthermore, like I said, the designers _knew_ this was the wrong choice and tried to hedge it by making indexing more flexible, but that wasn't done thoughtfully and the result is unfixable bugginess. Julia is not a serious language, simply put.

IBM was invested into adopting swift a lot for backend development, but it flopped hard. IBM was first to lunch online repl for swift, they were building one of the first and now dead backend development framework for swift, first package index, etc. They were not involved in building swift itself tho
The Ruby one was funny. I love Ruby, but I have never used Rails. I'm still working on a 2-year degree in programming, so I really don't know much, but I think that Ruby should be used for a lot more than it is.

For Java I would just go with middle-aged guy in a suit, grey hair, visibly experienced, but also visibly carrying something from past. For C# I would go with a hipster wearing lots of random pieces of garment.

My collage runs all robots on matlab, why you ask? bcs they are over 15 years old and some profesor vrote drivers in matlab 2007 and it is standard to this day, any other version crashes whole labs
Similar thing happened in my college too. The professors were suck and didn't do real engineer. They just taught what's on the textbook with so little experience doing the real thing in the real industry. They couldn't even update nor improve anything in the lab when the professor who created it was retired.
