Awesome video. I currently have a Japanese maple that i dug up from a job, pruned the roots and potted it. Looking well so far hopefully it survived everything. I would like to cut it down like this next winter 🎉

I may have cut some of those larger branches off. I am making bonsai out of simular material. I want to prune to promote backbudding the first year, then chop the big branches to the trunk on year 2. Mybe i will try one like this too.

@@MiltonChang-ee6rq Correct. Maple seedlings growing in the spring are free and the sprouted ones are easy to dig up. Free also. I try and do the same. I do geranium bonsai also. Cheap and easy, especially when on sale for $0.50 on the ones they forgot to water and are still green.

Music provided by Songbird Inc. Hey, just the warning Maples belong to a group of trees, known as bleeders. If you prune them from late winter to late spring, talking about a sizing bowl branch, the sap will start running and you cannot stop it. I had a nursery back in 80s and 90s called dwarf Gardens, I did a lot of bones eye for retail one day. A gentleman came over who had in the enormous bones eye collection. His backyard look like Mr. Miyagi, but he came to me because he couldn’t stop the bleeding on his Japanese maple. We tried everything from using a propane, torch wax seals. Eventually it did stop running, but again, not a good time of the year to prune a thick branch on a Japanese maple from late winter to mid spring

I bought some .They work great! I do like the bypass pruner for larger twigs. Bypass pruners smash one side of the cut, though. The small red ones allow one to score around the cut nicely.

Tree #2…cut that large low branch off now. It extends too far from the trunk. Cut all thick branches back to promote budding closer to the trunk. Secondary branching will be really far out there otherwise. I know you prefer your style but maybe try one tree with a severe reduction. Maybe consider a concave cutter to clean up those cuts. They aren’t expensive anymore.

I would like to know how to make some leaves smaller. I know not all trees can do this, but what is the process or does it happen naturally? Thanks
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 4 месяца назад
Have to be specific to each tree. Mistreating like depriving of water will do it…but make the tree sickly. Leaf size reduces when there is more branching…this is very obvious with elm and Zelkova.

Hi , what is your advice regarding grafted japanese maples? I have a shishigashira which is grafted and the scar is not bad but I have read online it can get worst as the tree ages. In your experience, does the graft scar improve/worsen over time or is it best to air layer the tree at the graft scar and restart. Are there any tricks to avoid it looking worst? I have read surrounding the base of the trunk with sphangnum moss can help?

I love Japanese maples ..but unfortunately I am in Texas and the heat is like crazy brutal on maples you have to be very finessing between greenhouses and shade trees and I mean like heavy cover shade trees to get away with a successful maples here it's always a chore to find that fine balance to keep one looking good and healthy here
@MiltonChang-ee6rq
@MiltonChang-ee6rq 6 месяцев назад
to Give itample water and keep it in the shade should do fine. Trident leaves are less likely to burn like Palmatum

Have you checked out the MrMaple "Heat Seeker" series of Japanese Maples. Many are rated to grow in parts of Texas I believe.

your first tree has four thick branches growing out of one spot. won't this cause the tree to thicken too much?
@lorenzoveronese6608
@lorenzoveronese6608 6 месяцев назад
Yess, it will cause it. Also many branches where damaged when cut. It seems to me that he has done the things too fast and roughtly, not good to learn from something like that

I don't believe Acer palmatum is available at my local Home Depot because of the local cold climate. When I look online to order them I see that most are grafted. Do I need to avoid grafting with Japanese maple?

I would take the grafted maple and do an air layering. You may find you get a few trees that way.

You know when you are using that handy dandy clipper on bigger limbs then it was designed for it looks like your struggling. I’ve found that I buy quality tools and they last. Bonsai tools especially when you buy quality tools are overpriced. I’ve had some of my tools for 45 years. If I were to buy them today it would be very expensive.

@@MiltonChang Yes I understand. I’m always looking for a better less expensive way of doing things. I’m not poor by no means but dropping the money on bonsai tools is not first on my list of bills to pay each month. And you just look like you are struggling with those shears. But I do enjoy your program
