Follow along as I install and test out a new Solas impeller and wear ring for my 2004 Yamaha FX Cruiser HO.
This setup is part of Riva's RPM kit. They're claiming their kit can hit 63 mph so I'm optimistic. The one review on their sit is claiming a 5-7 mph increase which is huge. We'll see how it goes!

I own a pair of this exact make and model, mine are in similar condition and turn heads out on the lake. No one can believe they are 18 years old. Long story but I owned a 3rd one at one time with the FULL Riva Kit installed on it (Stacks, ride plate, seal kit, etc.) and it was definitely faster than my stock Waverunners. While it was faster out of the hole and faster top speed it was not what I would call earth shattering and while I would overtake my stock Waverunners in a drag race I didn't just "blow by them". With the full kit, I was probably at 60 MPH. When you change out the intake grates, Yamaha used aluminum bolts to secure it. When I changed mine out I broke a head off as it was frozen but since they were aluminum they just felt tight till the head broke right off. So, be careful there... I was just out on the water yesterday and on a whim I typed in 2004 FXHO in the search and your Video's came up. Great to see someone else is riding these and keeping them in tip top shape. We have owned ours since 2007 and while they have had their share of things go down on them (broken engine mounts, ECM module) we love them.

Just bought a 2007 Fx Ho with 117 hrs on it, and my wife and I with both of us on it hit 60 mph with almost a full tank. I am about to start putting on the RPM kit and hope to get it up another 3 to 5 mph. Great ski, love the way the engine sounds and runs its a wonderful machine, not as fast as my 2017 VXR and 2015 Fx Cruiser HO, but its fun to see how these different engines perform with upgrades.

Nice video. Impellers often won't make a big difference to top end but they'll help you get there quicker. I would go with a top loader grate to help with hook up. I wouldn't go changing the engine air intake though. I know it's a common mod, but if you ride in surf, the last thing you want is the worry of water ingress into the engine. If you ride on lakes and rivers, then just ignore me. PS - cute kids

I have never in my life seen an impeller come off that easy. I had to use a 2 foot long wrench and it broke my vice in half.. lol

awesome video. Glad to know your pump bolts were not seized. I'm wanting to do the impeller and wear ring in a 2007 VX110. The local ski shop told me to not seal the wear ring and pump back together, so I didn't when I changed out my 2017 FXHO.

Thanks! I’m glad as well! Yeah, I don’t really see the need to seal the 2 housings together. Should be fun to break apart if I ever want to replace the wear ring again…

The Intake grate will always slow you down in smooth water. Ride plates are a better am buy. Also make sure the pump seal is good. The riva silicone pump air boid kits are good. Also replace the stock air filter with a prox or any other wire style air filter.

I actually picked up a mph or 2 from the intake grate. Tough to control the test given conditions are variable. With that said, my buddy's new SeaDoos were still faster then mine after all I added until I updated the intake grate which I did last. So I think in my case it increased top speed in smooth conditions as you can see in the vid. All GPS confirmed.

I think the toploader grate will make more of a difference, I've toyed with the impellor upgrade but your experience seems to be fairly typical. Is your speed off a GPS? I run the same machine stock and in a perfect sea state can hit 61mph, best achieved with a tiny ripple as opposed to completely flat calm, no sensation quite like it. Thanks for the upload.
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 3 года назад
I’m using GPS. Your top speed seems to be more inline with what I’ve read online. I originally thought it was the impeller/wear ring slowing me down but that’s not the case. Must be something else. I’m 220lbs but I doubt that’s going to lose me 4-5mph. I wonder if I can adjust the throttle to get more RPM’s. We’ll see what the grate gets me.
@peterpan4139
@peterpan4139 3 года назад
@@thehobbymechanic47 About the same weight as me. Trim adjustment can make a difference. I've read reviews elsewhere indicating that the solas impellor will give better hook up, but less top end. Following with interest.

@thehobbymechanic47

I got most, if not all parts, from RIVA RACING. I googled the parts on the RPM kit. I think it was worth just ordering everything in the RPM kit from RIVA but I can’t remember entirely.

I did the same to mine, added the same prop and new factory wear ring . Im thinking the clearance between the prop and wear ring is too big. Would be nice if it was tighter. I get alot of cavitation on take off.
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 Год назад
Yeah, I imagine you can get cavitation if the tolerance on your wear ring/prop are too much. I don’t have the tolerances for mine but I think you’re on the right track.

I have a 2004 fx ho that’s got super bad cavitation on take off. Just wondering if you recommend these parts? Was it pretty simple to install? Just curious before I drop $1000 in parts for it! Thanks!
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 Год назад
This is the only time I’ve upgraded one of my skis with aftermarket parts. I had great results with mine but can’t claim I’ve tried any of the other brands/parts. You might be happy with a new wear ring. Just depends on what’s causing the cavitation.

@thehobbymechanic47 Год назад
Well, definitely not in new condition but the tolerances looked OK. It was running pretty solid as it was. I only did these upgrades to try and keep up with my buddy’s newer Seadoos. Can you see any major tolerance issues on yours?

@@thehobbymechanic47 one of mine is an 04 fxho and the other is an 07 fxho. My 04 has always run like a dream but the 04 has always had a minor vibration. Since they are 15 years old and older, the impeller duct was worn on both boats giving me cavitation. I thought I would fix it with new impeller duct, impeller, and wear ring. I did it on the 07 and it fixed the cavitation but still has slight vibration. Did the same thing to the 04 thinking it would be a rocket but I stead it has no cavitation but terrible vibration that shakes the whole boat.
@SuperMattb17

@@philipschutter1626 late reply = I have an 07 FXHO and it has just started bad vibrations at low speeds, low spped turns. High speed is fine - and it seems to be when first on the water or after 1-2 hours sitting idle. Googleing seems most likely to be pump bearings- So I am going to replce them, impeller and housing at the same time.

Hi Guys, I have the 2007 fxho and i cant get it past 51mphish (82kmh), any suggestions, I'm not sure what impeller its got, but motor wise is perfect, maybe fuel filter plugs? Any help would be great from Australia! Cheers
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 Год назад
Hey! Just saw this question. A tune up is always a great start. The impeller and wear ring are also good for getting more kph. The clearances for the impeller and wear ring are super tight so if you’ve had a rock or something up in there they could be increased which can cause you to experience a lower pressure/force of water when under way. Given this is an older question, have you tried anything since you posted your question?

I can't remember off the top of my head. I purchased the Riva RPM kit which currently comes with the YG-DF-14/20 impeller so I assume that was what I purchased. I assume they haven't updated their kits given its for such an old ski.

How on earth do you have a pair of 06’s with only 50hrs on them? They’re time capsules. I’d guess they’re worth $5-6k a piece. Also depends on the market where your selling and whether or not they’ve been sitting or they’re ready to run. They have a cult following but they’re still 16 y/o skis.

Hi! I just want to ask you, mine is Bogging at 7k rpm what do you think should I do?
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 2 года назад
Tough to say. I’d start with making sure the ski isn’t in L mode then add new plugs, new gas, oil change, air filter then check the entire exhaust for signs of clogs, intake/prop for debris/tangles. If that doesn’t do it then check compression.
