@@ham90 thank you for your reply. I know that closet walls are rarely load bearing, but being new to home remodeling, just wanted to get an idea of what to look for in deciding what walls to consider for possible removal. My luck would be a Faulty Towers episode where a load bearing wall was demolished in a hotel. 😂
In many areas of the US removing a closet like this would change how many bedroom you can legally list your house as having. It can change not only the homes value but your insurance, taxes and even occupancy limits. Built ins wouldn’t be classified as a closet in my area and my homeowners insurance would change.
@@thecat7803 Probably not, but you do realize that if a room does not have a closet it can no longer be considered a bedroom in some areas? So, you might not have asked about closets but you probably did ask about the number of bedrooms. Which is literally what the original commenter was stating.
Most dangerous part is removing the headers. Headers distribute force to compensate for the lack of a walls support ex: door, hallway opening etc. depending on the way the roof is oriented to this room that could cause major issues.
@@karenreaves3650 because load bearing runs longitudinally with the outer walls of the house to support the over all truss systems that run in the opposite direction. The headers above the closet could just as easily be a beam (a supporting member). There is no telling what your looking at because people renovate all the time. Looking back she did say headers. But I've seen people just straight up cut beams and have their house sag.
She mentioned that giving her drawers inside the closet allowed her to remove the dresser so she has more space in her room. However I agree, there's less closet space.
I like how she said she was turning two closets into one, then proceeded to turn two closets into four. Without even making sure that it wouldn't affect the structure of her house.
Why use those ikea units? You couldve made your own built in closet which will maximize the space. Like adjustable shelves, seperate closet for shoes/bags ang maybe a larger space above for storing winter clothes/extra blankets/luggage. I mean you took the divider wall but now youve got those small extra spaces on the sides.
Trust, those Ikea cabs, are cheap, decent and take less than a whole day to plan, shop for, purchase, assemble, install. This does not include the tear out, or trim for diyers, that will prob take more than day, as a pro, with my helper I could do the whole project in a day, tear out and trim included. It would be a full day but one day nonetheless. Doing this custom with lumber is more than a day for me, and costs more in materials, trust it really does, and it takes a ton more tools to do nicely. These pax units are very decent for their cost and effectiveness. This is coming from someone who does this day in and day out.
I was kinda stumped by this too. Plus the comment about structural integrity. I realize like contractor commenter said it may cost more but actually nowadays there r DIY closet organizers so...yeah. I thot this was going to be "rip 2 out to get a big 1" deal but then the several ikea units came in and I was stumped 🤷🏻♀️
@@Britty0189 No it’s because it’s because her her home and her money and if she wants to put them all over her house she can do that she’s paying for it.
@@romystumpy1197 had an IKEA closet for a decade and nothing was falling apart. Only reason why I changed it was because I changed my room's theme and the old closet didn't fit it.
My immediate thought was that “removed wall” was probably a support beam otherwise the wall would be pointless and have caused extra work for the builders.
Or it could have been a closet in a room designed for two people, numb nuts. If you believe any load bearing wall is made of ply wood and plaster then you have no right to comment anything. She knows what she is doing. Far better that any of the simple minds commenting on her video
I really like this. Not only did removing that middle wall open it up for the modular, it just made the whole space look bigger!! I love how she gained so much more storage/closet space!!
These kind of videos are usually always cool. This one seems dangerous and less attractive than before. At least leave the header alone for support and make one big closet. And then Ikea?
When I was a girl I had a bedroom I absolutely LOVED! All built in drawers therefore plenty of space and a large closet. It was on the third floor with a window seat, windows looking into a leafy huge old tree-it was HEAVEN!
Taking out a whole wall and getting rid of the headings just to throw in some ill-fitted ikea closets, sorry but what a waste of time and lack of vision
As soon as the word IKEA come out, there is something wrong. Doing that much demo, might as well go all out to do custom closet. Few sheets of ply wood will be far better than particle boards from IKEA. Lol.
Hold your breath for the video where she comes back saying her child’s room concaved because she removed a loadbearing wall… The clock is ticking, especially because she replaced it with no other supports
@@disgustedluigi why does it matter ?. Cause whites always put aside other options other then theirs and put down it too. Nothing is relevant or right if it's not white.
I don't like it at all, you could have given her an awesome walk in closet, this reminds me of a hospital room. Definitely a down grade, sorry for my brutal honesty. Something about it just doesn't do it for me.
@@cuttlefish4144 she's literally asking for people's opinions... And it appears as of right now about 64 other people agree with me...so how about you shush your mouth!!! And we're giving constructive criticism, let's hope she plans on living in that house forever bc resale value when way down after the diy disaster she created in her daughter's room.
I mean, they not only completed the project, but they also had time to edit and post it to RU-vid. I think if it was a load bearing wall it would have done SOMETHING noticeable by now.
Suggestion: for the top cabinets I don’t think you should make them open upwards as it will be very difficult to open from the bottom without a stool or a ladder
You did a fantastic job. I built one of these for a customer of mine & that sucker took me 10 hours !!! He had the one with the cabinet lighting, but his was slightly bigger & had more of those storage sections. Literally wrapped covered the 3/4 of the walls. It came out amazing. Yours is nicer with those handles though lol
You are a wonderful person and a blessing for many souls. Not only your children but us people also looks up to you for motivation and inspiration. God bless you. Thank you so much for uploading and making us part of your amazing inspirational journey.❤️❤️❤️🙏
Fabulous job splendido! You are very hard-working lady you did a magnificent job good for you your daughter is going to freaking love it! RM. PS what a nice mom you are.
I love this! It not only gave her soo much extra space by not having to have a dresser or chest of drawers, but it also just made the room look better in general ♥️
@@CallieMasters5000 well her daughter is a teen so there's no telling how tall she is. Plus the racks could only hold, like, winter clothes or something
Your daughter is so lucky! Glad she has such a lovely family and home. I grew up poor and bullied and abused and it is still affecting me decades later.
if it’s solid (usually with concrete etc) this wasn’t a load bearing wall though, 2 by 4s do not hold up weight im pretty sure. but if you want to take down a wall, check with a professional
Look in attic. If ceiling joist run parallel to wall you want to remove it’s not a bearing wall. There are other factors such as engineered beams, joist, and rafters that can make a wall a bearing or not. Check with a reputable contractor.
It's quite possible that it was a supporting beam based off of how the roof has ever so slightly sagged at the end (you can see the space where the roof and wall joins is much closer together). If you were wanting to do something similar yourself, I'd consult a professional first
@@liveeprice9215 2x4's definitely can be load bearing. The giveaway is that there was headers over the openings. She has almost certainly removed a structural element. It would be fine to remove it, but needs to replace the headers with a properly sized single header
Awesome job, I love the fact that your a woman too. Alot of men will act like women can't do stuff like this... you proved that a lie. Made my day to see how determined and strong women are these days!
@@Lily-ok9lp To keep people from listing a house with 2 bedrooms and an attic as a 3 bedroom house or subdividing houses into unlivable spaces for rent. If you make scams more annoying to pull off, they're less likely to happen.
A good way to tell if a wall is load bearing in a 2nd story house is if a wall is connected on all levels. If you have a crawl space you can see beams of the load bearing walls and follow them up and a good rule of thumb is if the wall is under 6 inches thick it is not load bearing.
FYI: When you go to resell this house, if you don't have a closet, it's not considered a bedroom. So your now 3 bedroom house is a 2 bedroom house with a bonus room.
WOAH!! this is seriously impressive, the independence of it too- love it so much that closet looks amazing so far and it’s not even done yet fantastic job👏
What's that wall made of, cardboard? I can't imagine not having a solid wall lol Also I'm sorry but those closet doors are so ugly... and so are the handles. Such plain handles just look cheap on the already barren doors.
People hate on everything 🤣 that girl is so lucky to have a mother that does this for her! I remember dreaming of a functional dresser as a kid. Let alone a whole cool closet in your own room! 💖
Ikea does not have the iPax frames in stock for delivery or pick up. Did you have this problem? If so how long did you have to wait for ikea to have them back in stock for delivery. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.
Nice!! Im in an old 1992 condo. Theres 2 reg closets in ea room, w/ 3' of space between & a sm window in that space. If I owned it, I'd totally be doing something like this!
