In this video I update you with progress on Project Audi 80.
There has been about a 10 week gap since the last update and a lot has happened though not of all it has been filmed, simply because the car was beginning to p**s me off! But we are on good terms again now and there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
I forgot to say it in the video but it made me chuckle while awaiting rescue in the pub car park - "Vorsprung Durch Tow Truck"😁

Am I the only younger person who doesn’t care for Golf’s, R8’s and loves to see the old humdrum Audi’s? Keep it up Edd China double 😉

Ha! Thanks Hugo! There is a certain charm to these cars which takes me back to the Mk2 Golfs on which I cut my teeth in the 90s. I know them inside out so the 80 gives me a similar pleasure but it's also a journey of discovery too (and much harder to get parts for as they don't have a particularly strong cult following)

I have fond memories of these Audi 80’s...my families business had a fleet of red ones all K and L reg cars. I didn’t realise they were already that difficult to get spares for!

Not so fast I’m also a younger person who loves these cars and has one myself

Thanks Volkswizard - brings back memories of my dad (RIP) and when he got the entry model in 1994 (1.6E in the Netherlands). Yeah, it was a bit of an underpowered slouch, but with incredibly iconic looks. First time he started the engine, my brother and I thought they had swapped the engine for one of those from an electric RC toy car - it sounded that measly indeed (52Kw / 71 HP), LOL.

Perseverance in abundance there, Andrew. Good to see the Audi 80 rewarding your efforts now. Still a cracking piece of nostalgia. All the best as always.

Great to see some non-Polish 80 content! Have you already stumbled on the famous heater core problem of the Audi 80? I sure have... I have been postponing this hell of a job for months now. I (and almost every 80 owner) would love to see a video on how to properly replace a leaking heater core on the 80. Now that its winter it will provide quite some views for sure!

I had an Audi80 as my first car. I remember mine having drum brakes in the back. I changed the antenna probably 4 times because the retractable ones are so fragile. I could never get the ashtray to retract all the way either. Nice car for back then, but the brakes were awful :) nice memories.

Good old Audi, not putting the radio antennae on the front wing ( as Mk1 Golf) near the engine, near the alternator. A friend of mine has an 80 saloon, still good after 32 years, that smooth shape is timeless.

I’ve a B3 1988 Audi90 quattro. Had it 8 years. One of the most reliable cars I’ve ever had. Love it. It’s in the garage at mo having a few bits. Hope to get it back before summer ends so I can have a good drive in the sun. Was my mums then my dads. Was thrilled when I got it.

Made me realise how much I missed my old Audi 80 tdi. Mine had the same wheel trims in which I thought looked, just as good as the alloys. I had 2x 80 tdi's, one saloon, one avant, both in tornado red with grey velour trim.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 4 года назад
Hey Paul, I’d imagine a TDI would still be a very usable car, problem is most have been used too much and are dead now. I’d love a tidy TDI Avant but then clean air zones etc are not making that very appealing these days.
@paulpanayi9135
@paulpanayi9135 4 года назад
@@volkswizard yes very usable power of 90bhp, which was a very smooth power band. The older tdi cars, now have been taxed off the roads and out of city centres. Again great content 💯👌

Nice intro soundtrack to match the car’s era. I understand why a car would piss you off, especially when you love it so much that it’s part of the emotional reaction does not involve trashing or ridding off it.

Glad you appreciated (and got!) the intro as it took about 10 x longer to create than the main bit. I was feeling creative today so thought I’d indulge😁

Those old aerials, you never ever had a problem with loosing FM signal And those proconten steering wheels always looked the biz. So much better than when airbags started coming out soon after making proconten instantly redundant

VAG car in rear calliper seizing situation! I honestly dont think I've never had a VW/Audi/Seat that a rear calliper didn't need replaced/rebuilt going all the way back to my Mk2 GTi days, god knows why they are so bad at it. They even fecked it up when they moved to electric handbrakes by having crap plastic motor covers. Are my 8L S3 callipers dragging? you better believe both of them are! 🤣

I still don't understand why you didn't just connect the additional gauge cluster and bought a different center console. It's quite easy to connect those gauges.

Just goes to show how much wear is age rather than mileage related.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 4 года назад
Indeed Roger, it's the fact this car has been left unused for great lengths of time that has been the issue with nearly everything. Occasional use and good storage means low mileage cars can be great but neglect is never good.

The rear brakes also got grippy on my audi 80 too, probably a factory thing, although the car has seen more days than I have

Has the audi 80 got on your nerves andrew still a good car hope its running better now are you still likening the new golf
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 4 года назад
Yes it has, primarily because the expensive new fuel sender from Audi Tradition in Germany appears to over read so I ran out of fuel, that is annoying. New Golf is great, brief first track outing on 8/8 scheduled.

@volkswizard

No sadly not, it will be up for sale, COVID repercussions means sentimentality has to take a back seat so cars that don't serve a purpose have to sold. No idea how much but will probably be an auction of some sort.

I share your frustration regarding getting parts for older cars especially oem parts
@volkswizard

Audi Tradition do great work but their super fast DHL shipping from Germany is very expensive & there is no option for a slower cheaper service which makes cheaper smaller purchases hard to justify sadly

He didn't clean the grime that had collected under the grommet and it high key rattled my OCD

Not always easy to do that and hold a camera especially with limited time. It was done before the grommet was fitted properly.

I thought all the aerials were in the rear windows. On the 5 Audis I've had, three 100s, current 80 and an A4 B5 they have been.

That is weird but judging by the amount of grommets available there is definitely some wing mounting happening. Might be the basic nature of this one?

@TheKenjoje
@TheKenjoje 4 года назад
@@volkswizard your obvious frustration is exactly the reason why I wrote what I wrote. I like the idea of driving decent youngtimers because they don't make big compromise when compared with modern cars and that's because they were so good originally....but if the experience becomes too painful, it's better to fix it completely or to get rid of. greetings....
