In episode 13 of Project Binky, the Mini gets a new fuel tank, we finish off the parcel shelf, complete the firewall and take a look at the wheel situation. There's homemade contraptions, MIG welding, TIG welding and a shed load of grinding action! And tea, lots of tea.

+Dan Haines The Quarterly Review changed Davy's aluminum to aluminium. Of course this is the magazine that attacked writers John Keats, Percy and Mary Shelley among other writers of the time. Percy claimed that they caused Keats death. I like the fact that Napoleon III gave utensils made of it to preferred guests while the rest had to settle for gold ones.

"In 1808, Humphry Davy identified the existence of a metal base, which he at first termed alumium and later aluminum." It has always been aluminum. The word got bastardized by the British scientific societies in 1812 to sound "more modern"; as they saw their imperialistic conquests beginning to falter (already having lost more than one war against their former colonies) and wanted to take a new approach (science) to set themselves apart as "better" than everyone else at the time...

These episodes should be shown to all schools of automotive technologies. In the times of crap and cheating these videos are a perfect examples of work done with proud and precision. Unseen in today's body shops. Cut corners work become a standard in all trades simultaneously with inflated prices. This kind of work is pleasure to watch. Fantastic work like in a machine shop. The only drawback must be a price, I guess.

Getting to the end of a binge watch here. This project is really the culmination of every single car guy solution all wrapped into one single build. I've been maybe 80% of the way through a 944 ls1 swap and this is starting to trigger my project PTSD. Particularly noted was the solution to bump steer and the fabrication of a heim joint thread converter sleeve. I had to beg my way through forums for something like that! This is coming from an American too. We have American Top Gear, and it sucks.

This is probably a stupid question but why did you need to create those long indentations across the fuel tank? Does it make the design stronger?
@FireCrowsWorkshop
@FireCrowsWorkshop 8 лет назад
yes, that's the whole purpose of it. Flat sheets of steel, aluminium or even fibreglass aren't as strong as curved ones, so if you have indentation going across the flat section it does make it stronger, thus preventing the volume of fuel from bulging the walls of the tank outwards.

I'm not understanding the bit about the wheels. Did the offset change? It seems to me that the inside edge is further under the arch because of the added width, but the outside edge is sticking out just as far as it did before. What am I missing? (besides the proper amount of brain cells, obviously)
@BadObsessionMotorsport
@BadObsessionMotorsport 8 лет назад
+Velocity Labs The outside edge of the wheel is in exactly the same place, but the tyre no longer bulges out past it even further. Saves us 25mm.

By the way, Velocity Labs, I have one of your "chill before serving" T-shirts, and really like your decision to make it glow in the dark. It's very distinctive & appropriate on track nights. Still waiting for Bad Obsession to offer one that reads "make the noise", though.

So ... could you not fit a full sized spare if you added a U shaped pocket into the bottom of the boot floor? Edit, oh and on the wheel lathe. If you bolt down a grinder the right height, then grab the wheel and turn it into it (on a table) you get a bloody perfect cut.
@oaccessasia
@oaccessasia 8 лет назад
put tire in front end like the pros in Timbuktu. It's A great bumper! Or place in a cool fashion mount in front of side mirror. Or put tire on back like a wing or on back like jeeps. Put in back seat,, Jesus need I go over all the awesome choices.

@Big-Adam Funny you should mention the grinder, that's the way I've been doing it, but not on wheels. :-)

Behind the Tank under the bottom of the floor is the rear axle & diff and the exhaust. And Nick wants a space for some luggage. You really didnt need a spare wheel in a Mini.

Honestly, it would make sense to me to mount the spare wheel on the back seats, doubt there's space for anyone except Rich's twins to sit... that's just MHO though...

Same. What I'm most impressed with, aside from the perfect command of Blackadder and Python references, is the sense of continuity in the editing. If you hadn't told me I wouldn't have guess the span of time the series goes.
