Project Cars 2 vs Automobilista 2 | Direct Comparison 

First off awesome comparison! I see alot of people really trashing pcars2 or ams 2. As fan of both ams 2 and pcars 2, I think you did a great job of not trashing either game. Secondly, in my opinion I think Automobilista looks maybe a little less detailed or more bland on a flatscreen. But because of that reason I get much better VR performance which makes it the best VR racing game I've played. Anyways, keep up the great work! I'll keep watching!

Thank you for the comparison. I did not dislike PC2, but it took me months to get the FFB somewhat acceptable. I have now purchased AMS 2 and, again, it took me a while to set my 10 year-old Fanatec CSR wheel (particularly with regard to sensitivity), but now... wow! The FFB is smooth, progressive and you can feel the tyres load up and squirm, especially in the stock car and the Mitsubishi Lancer. I am old-school GPL sim racer, so don’t care much for “fake” FFB and focus entirely on lateral forces. Laser scanned tracks? I really don’t care... So, I turn everything way down, apart from gain (which is at 50%), and then you can really feel these cars come alive. IMO, most sim racers have FFB far too strong... if you keep it light, you really feel everything so much clearer. Just try the Lancer at Kyalami, my old stomping ground. Outstanding!

The Redbull track in PC2 looks much better than in AMS2, it has a lot more detailed textures in the runoff areas as well as in the asphalt it self, in AMS2 it looks more plane, simplistic. These titles have so many settings that thinks like the sounds and handling of the cars can be adjusted and , matched to each person's liking. Like for instance if you think the Catherham sounds better in AMS2, what happens if you increase the volume of the engine on PC2? also if you change the setup of the car, you can make the driving experience almost identical between both titles. Sames settings doesn't ensure same performance, is like the TVs they sell at the store, many of the times one model looks better than the other one because they have been setup better.

Super cool. Thanks for taking the time to do this. The sounds are way better in AMS2, for sure. For the track colors/details, I'm going to have to wait to drive AMS2 to decide. The colors definitely seem to be more saturated by default in PC2. That said, I fully expect for surface details to be better in AMS2. You've already talked about how much better the curbs and whatnot actually feel. Regarding criticizing PC2: Competition is good, and criticism offered in good faith is nothing but valuable. :-)

Agree with everything and when pCars 2 came out, the Formula Trainier was very tricky to drive and a lot more like AMS 2, but SMS made it simcade like many cars with updates to make it easier for gamepad-users i guess. For better control in AMS 2: reduce rear ARB to 0 and a bit more front-brake-bias helps a lot. Just was driving it online in a fixed setup race and you can still change ARB if the keys are mapped for it. It has an open differential and apart from not touching dirt and some curbs it's rotating especially while coasting, so no throttle-input. A bit trail gas helps to stabilize the car.

I haven't even thought of installing pcars2 again, In regards to Ams2, very good can only get better simmers 👍🏎️🏁

Fair review, much appreciated! I bought Automobilista 2 a couple years and only just tried it out. Aoutomobilista is clearly a step up from PC2. That being said Automobilista 2 is a newer title so it is to be expected. I expect I will be putting quite a few hours into Automobilista over the next few months as I just bought a Varjo Aero and it is incredible!

I own all the major sims apart from Project Cars. Automobilista 2 is becoming my new favourite game. I suspect it won't replace iRacing for me though, just because it's so much easier to find people to race against there.

I don't understand why PC2 gets such a bad rep - it's miles better than GT Sport on PS4, and original Asetto Corsa - and apart from the usual bellends in the online lobbies ruining races, it's a fairly decent driving game imo

Same engine but the graphics and visual details of PC2 are far better than AMS2. I guess Reiza just focused more on physics than appearances.

You constantly seem to be associating difficulty of driving with realism. That's not always the case. The most popular example I know of is F1 2019 (I know, not really a sim, but still applies here). Sebastian Vettel drove it for a few laps and said that the cars are nowhere near as hard to drive in real life and they don't spin so much.

Since PC2 is almost 3 years old now, the graphics and immersion beside of the sound of some cars are way better and with Jack Spade custom FFB files you can dial the FFB to your likings, did you use the "Loose" setup for the cars you've tested?

Would love to try AM2 but I'm on Xbox. PC2 still looking pretty good after two years.

Maybe you could've also compared the HUD, (camera) Settings, AI, career mode, multi-player? It's not only the looks, sounds and handling which makes a good comparison imo

My opinion: Sound: AMS2 (big difference) FFB: PC2 Physics: Different AI: PC2 (Both games AI sucks thou) Variety of Content: PC2 Quality of Content: Equal AMS2 is in early access still so I hope they'll catch up and maybe even pass PC2 in a few of these categories.

I prefered the ambient sounds better in AMS2, but I think visually there's not that much in it. Comparing then on these two points, there's not much between them.

After latest update all i want is them to work on better anti aliasing and better shadows and make the Ai better and i will be very happy with my $130 spend ! As is now the shadow and aliasing shimmer that is hung over from pC2 need to be fixed ! and i mean badly it needs to be fixed !

It won't surprise you I prefer PC2 track graphics. At least the AMS2 ones are more up to date. Sounds - not judging from your video but from how it sounds on my PC in cockpit view - I actuality prefer the PC2 trainer but agree the AMS2 Caterham sounds better. Physics is something of a moving target with changes coming regularly but currently the AMS2 cars are definitely more oversteery. The trainer in PC2 defaults to slick tyres while the AMS2 has treaded tyres - not sure which you tested in PC2, but even with treads the PC2 car doesn't have so much lift off oversteer. Which is most realistic - can't comment - I need to watch some FF races to see how they drive.

Crazy how bland the asphalt looks on AMS2 comparec to PCARS2. The sound of the Caterham tho, incredible. In PCARS the caterham sounds like a generic compact street car xD

I think having something new is just refreshing and makes one just a tiny bit biased but yes it does sound better. As for handling i have never driven any high performance car at race pace in reality so i dont know what the handling should be therefor i cannot dare to say what game has the most realistic handling. pcars caterham sounds like a generic 4 cyclinder turbo, which is odd lol

Did you try to change the levels of different types of sounds in PC2? You can get the same level of sounds for wind, gears and the road as in AMS2 by just changing the levels. Btw, I have both games.

Ams2 have done a much better job with Madness Engine the PC2 which is lame. However Ams2 is more about fun, it still has a seriously flawed AI but if you're really after a realistic racing experience then my money is still on rFactor 2. At least you know that that game will continue to improve for the foreseeable future.

AMS2 has a cooler colour palette that I don't like but aside from that the lighting seems improved and the sound is leagues better than PC2.

Nice comparison Ricky. Sound is much better on Automobilista but the graphics are far worse than project cars. Which is strange to me because you'd think they would only improve on that. Also, are the tires made of ice on Automobilista? Literally every car seems to oversteer on this game

I love AMS2 and I agree with you on the better handling of the cars and sounds in AMS2. But graphically PC2 is way better than AMS2. Everything in AMS2 looks a little false almost arcade to me. you touched on the season modelling in PC2 and I think this gives it a more realistic look. Also I have noted that to get AMS2 looking remotely good on a monitor you have to have to use the higher end of the graphics settings, certainly higher than in PC2 to achieve the same level of quality. I put a lot of time and effort into PC2 and it proved to be a waste of time. I hope AMS2 continues to improve and be the game that PC2 should have been.

Very well done! Glad you're doing more videos. I think pc2 still looks better but i hate these "old" curbs. I mean honestly the italian flag curbs at imola look so much better than these boring red and white in pc2. the same goes for rb ring: the newer curbs just look and feel better.

So which one should I get? I only played Gran Turismo since PS1, NFS since 2003, and Forza Horizon 4. I was thinking about getting Forza Motorsport but I wanna try others.

Same engine but my god PC2 looks so much more lifelike! The distance scenery at Imola in the beginning, then the track colour in the 2nd comparison, massive differences in PC2 favour. AMS2 to me especially in VR, is very cartoony feel, I been hoping the add some colour, saturation etc options in future for us to adjust, but no luck as of yet.

That blue filter bothers me in Automobilista 2. I have a problem with my eyes, they are getting painful because of light and looking at AMS2 makes me feeling pain so I had to stop looking at screen till you didn't finish part of vid on Redbull Ring. I'd love to try this game some day but if I'll buy it I'll be forced to change settings in my monitor :

I really like ams2 but we need more shaders to choose between or ligh setup like in ams1 because colours are a bit off, dark (especially trees and grass)

Nice video. The caterham is an awful drive in ams2, in my opinion. The formula v10 and the super car are my personal favourites 😊

for the formula "rookie" you picked a wrong comparison imo, automobilista also has a pro version of the car you selected which has slicks which compare with pc2's version slicks

I built my computer ON PURPOSE for Assetto Corsa. I now run AC, ACC, PC, and PC2, with AC having the tightest noose around me...but I've still only BARELY scratched the surface of those..I have NO plans for Automobilista 2... On a different vein, how about a look/review of Ride3? I'm predominately a motorcyclist, but I can't resolve getting this title because of the reviews talking about the bad AMD interface.

As predicted, AMS2 is even worse than PC2. Oh well.....at least now PC2 fanboys can come out of the closet and scream how "awesome" PC2 is. AMS2 fanboys will always be there to support. A year ago nobody would even dare to say "i'm reinstalling PC2"....

The big thing here is that PC2 is finished. PC3 is coming soon.... It's never going to be improved. AMS2 is at a crazy early point in it's development now (1st August) and this video was made in April.... AMS2 will get better and better as it goes along and it's already better in almost every way.

Can’t remember whose channel it was on, but I saw an interesting video where they showed video of the wheel movement (as in a persons actual hands on the physical Thrustmaster or whatever brand wheel) along with the game footage in a side-by-side comparison of AMS2 and PC2. The AMS2 wheel was so much more active, clearly a different level of FFB and driver inputs going on. There’s no way you can look at that video or this one here and maintain any kind of claim that the physics and FFB are the same. I find that AMS 2 wins over PC2 regarding physics an FFB, but PC2 wins over AMS2 when it comes to graphics. AMS is still early acces, and I´m sure they will refine everything, alos the graphics, but texturing and colours looks better in PC2, also there are more details, like ambulances and other vehicles in PC2, sa well as the track surface seems more detailed with skidmarks etc..

That centre mirror on the PC2 Caterham is uber annoying.

Ricky, what sort of experience do you have with real cars on race tracks? Some of these comments in your video are such that without knowing your real life experience on a track, essentially mean nothing.

Ricky, do you have any real racing experience in these cars? Because otherwise you cannot say how realistic they drive. I often hear in sim racing channels that "x is harder to drive, it's way more realistic". But hard does not equal realistic. For instance David Perel has mentioned that the GT3 cars in iracing are more snappy and less forgiving than the actual real racing car. I wish more simmers (or at least anyone comparing games to real life) would realize that and only comment about realism when they know from experience how it should drive.

Thanks for the video Ricky i appreciate the work you did for the video. i too am a die hard PC2 avid sim racer. i have the usual sim with motion rig and more sound points that chicken in a chicken coop but it seems that there is a trade off here. trade sound for beauty hmm tough one really. i love the view of being in the car in the VR and driving one if my favorite GT3's with the lack of sound . it really bugs be that i can come close but i cant get the car to sound like it should, missing the little dings and pings that we would get which it seems that AB2 picks up. but the sound design on pc2 is truly expansive and with tweaks it adjustments. with that being said AB2 is still beta. i am truly trying to keep my self from switching because i just so love the view of PC2. seems from the videos covering AB2 that there are incremental changes that can be accomplished with some tweaking in PC2. i think the big change over is when the AI is improved appon which you really didn't cover in this video. let me know your thought on the AI and i might be willing to take the go ahead. And again thanks Rick for the video and stay safe on the track.

AMS looks like crap, the trackside, the tarmac, the cars, they look like a 5 year older game, sounds much better tohugh.

I think AMS1 sounds better than the current AMS2 sounds.. more to be improved...

IRL engine sound would be a bit muted by ear plugs... open full sound should be only used in replays.

The Red Bull track in AMS 2 is way better, just look how many kurbs are missing in PC2 version. And in PC2 are the worst kurbs in any game, and the track limits are just ridicilous.

Love machine-gunning through gears in AMS 2. Sounds good and feels good with an H shifter.

Can you tell me what driving camera views AMS2 has? Is there chase driving view.

GT Sport is my go to, much easier to drive PC2 is hard. If I could spend more time on a sim it might be better but I cant spare anymore. I have a job, physical training, cooking, cleaning, a partner that needs attention & tv to relax.

The formula 3 car in automobilista soinds like a vacuum cleaner.

AMS2 rings more with me because of 1980's tracks, and Cars. The handing is unique and satisfying. I also like how they take huge lengths to make tracks accurate.. I've noticed they don't place too much effort into car detail, that's fine with me as long as that effort is going to track accuracy and physics. I could care less about details of cars or tracks, I just want accurate physics and accurate tracks and tracks I want like 80's 90's the that F1 era and even the generic cars of that era. I also prefer well optimized tracks, but PC2 engine is not very fast.

The historic cars are what appeals to me .I do like the line up in Project Cars 2 .However there could be more .The six wheel Tyrel for example .I do like the replay views .

The sound in R3E sounds so superior to any other title that anything else sounds generic to me. But, AMS2 definitely sounds better than PC2.

With the Automobilista 2 1.5 update we now finally have Project Cars 3 and I'm glad for it!

AMS2 tire model is way too Slippery especially at lower speeds. Despite using the same graphics engine AMS2 looks a lot worse for some reason.

Control seems difficult in AMS2 no matter the setup. Let's face it PCARS 1 is better than both games.

After sticking to PC2 for a few years, not being happy with ACC, avoiding iRacing for the money pit it might become to me, I just installed rFactor 2. Pretty blown away by it. It doesn't have the graphic polish of PC2, but you pretty quickly forget that when your more engaged in the racing. Everything I ever read about rF2 is true. I am kicking myself for waiting this long and I have to wonder if that will be true of iRacing for me as well.

I have about 1400hrs in PCars 2. 1000hrs in AMS. Always said a sim with PCars2 graphics, VR and AMS FFB and handling would be a dream. It’s here. Took me about 1hr to know AMS2 is gonna be special. Very special. Almost none of that “FFB” re-learning every other sim has where it’s particular take on delivering FFB needs adjusted to - felt immediately comfortable with more car info and hence control than ever before.

It looks like we got a new AMS fan! :) (Too sad you didn't get to try AMS1 as well...)

PCars2 audio just sucks. Old PS2 racing titles have better sound. IMO RedBull track too clean & sterile in AM2(like in GTsport) Better in PCars2. IMO
