This job was actually completed in late Feb and is the follow up to Episode #04 where I am stripping the engine down to it's base components for the rebuild. #lotus #esprit #projectgt2
Rod cap removal tip: Thread rod bolts back into assembly, so that each rod bolt is backed out from may ~2 threads from being fully threaded in. Give those slightly protruding rod bolts a little love tap with the butt end of wooden hammer handle, and you'll easily separate the rod cap from the rod. Circlip removal tip: Knipex makes a special circlip pliers with flat serrated jaws specifically for circlips / snaprings of that design. Not terribly expensive, certainly £25 spent is better than the frustration (for me anyway). Knipex 45 10 170
Good tip. on the rod removal I was watching one of Iain Tyrrells videos this evening and was like - oh yeah I could have done that. The circlip was just a bit of fun, sometimes (a lot of the time) I need to destress and do something silly, I was actually laughing a lot when I did this :D Thanks for the advice thou, that does look like a handy tool, there are times you really do need to get those things out and I am a tool hoarder so I'll certainly look into those.
Yup, fairly soon as well as the gearbox needs a limited slip differential and some modifications to the clutch / input shaft. I re-conditioned it years ago but the car has only done about 50 miles since so it'll come apart again, get vapour blasted (cleaned), new bearings etc and crown wheel / pinion, updated gearchange mechanism as well......... not much to do !
