Kz Elizabeth is a queer, award-winning filmmaker and performer from Chicago. She’s the director and producer of ‘Pathetic Woman,’ a surreal LGBTQ+ short film that follows Andy and Kathryn, two office co-workers, who find themselves in a sudden and absurd codependent relationship.

I know the carrying here is somewhat extreme, but is it common for a woman to carry another woman like that. You always see a man carrying a woman. Have any of you ladies been carried like that? If so, how did it come about?

It's a great commentary on codependency and reciprocity in relationships. Especially Lesbian ones. It reminds me of this book I read about lesbian subculture back in the day. It was called Magic Momma's and Trembling Sisters. Really interesting. I've been thinking about it lately actually.

Why? It was a neat little story about toxic dependencies in a toxic relationship. Just get rid of the metaphors: the nonexistent disability and the abusive carrying. One controlling, overprotective partner and one submissive and abused partner. The controlling one can't get rid of that habit, apparently she's been like that in previous relationships and also continues with the next object of her interest in the end scene. Once the controlled partner get out of the trap that she's caught in, she's more independent, confident and happy. The debilitating constraints that appeared as real as a handicap were suddenly gone. We're used to this setup in male/female straight relationships, but obviously any type of relationship can have this problem. The fact that the next time we see the other woman she already once again has a new partner might indicate that she perhaps is partly responsible for putting herself in a position of deoendency of a partner, instead of being self reliant. At least this is my interpretation of the story...
