Allow me to be the first to offer my condolences about the Sigorsky prize. I have come to respect team Gamera after learning of the competition existing between them and Todd and Cameron's team. What a fantastic effort by your team, to set world records. Without such a worthy competitor, our U of T team could never have been pushed so far. I can only hope that this will mark the beginning of collaboration with AeroVelo, both teams much surely have a lot to learn from each other.
And usually when something of that size and that weight; there's only about 2 reasons why I could think it goes out of the 10 meter box. 1. One or more rotors are getting more power than the others. 2. One or more of the four arms are flexing under from the weight of the pilot therefore having the rotors different heights of the others off the ground. Even if its by an inch, it still changes a lot
I have an idea for getting maximum altitude. Extend the 4 rotors out farther making room for a fifth rotor under the pilot's seat. Should help with control too.
Might advance what we know about light alloys and composites, and structures fabricated from them. Lot of science and development from this project, more than you could imagine, obviously.
Engine thrust may be one of the issues causing drift. inverting the engine vertically either facing down or facing up could solve this issue. For safty reasons and less repair time put a lanyard on the engine. Just me looking from the outside not knowing what you may have tried or what you may have planned. I could be wrong

Too bad you lost the run, your design looks a lot more advanced than the winning design. Probably too much publishing and perfection when the goal was just to reach a 60sec flight at 3 meters. (I'd have done it the same ;)
