Project Zomboid Base Defense Guide

This guide aims to explain your options for base defense, from basic to advanced and cheasy.
I'm using a pretty loose definition of base, so this advice is something you can deploy on day 1 of a run, or be working towards building out months into your playthrough.
Please feel free to share your own tips or horror stories in the comments.

I'm a freaking lunatic man. Even once established, I will continue to sleep on the ground floor, and not bother to board up my windows or doors unless they get broken. The only thing I bother to fence in is my garden and my fishing spot, so zombies will not molest me as I work on that. The rest of the game is just endless combat patrols. *Blood for the blood god. Skulls for the skull throne*

I accidentally did almost burn my house down in real life when i was 7, my family hadnt let me live it down 14 years since then but it definitely has distilled a level of care i wouldve never thought necessary in a game. ESPECIALLY when your friend's base burns down right next to yours because she forgot to turn off the oven

I think a cool base defense idea would simply be a remote-lowered ladder. We already have remote controls in the game, but right now they are only really set up for a small range of items, like noise makers. If we could make what is effectively a fire escape ladder that works by remote, we could replace the old sheet rope option (with its inherent flaws and unappealing aesthetic) with something MUCH cooler. The downsides could be noise when it lowers/raises attracting attention, how long it takes to lower/raise potentially leaving you vulnerable, and perhaps requiring a decent battery source (either constant flow of small batteries or something larger like a car battery). In MP servers, it would also be a good way of restricting base access to only those you wanted to have it.
@King_WhiteWolf

This is an absolutely KICK-ASS idea! And it fits the roleplay theme perfectly too. Improvising something like this just makes so much sense, and it would also give incentive to get to the kinda skill level that would probably be necessary to do it too. I imagine we'd need quite a few different skillsets to create such a thing. Carpentry, Electronics, Engineering, and Metalworking all seem like they'd have some role in such a setup. Seriously, this is a very cool idea.

As a Kyle, I agree with everything in this video lol. I would add if you have the carpentry level for stairs, and have a floating base, keep all the material needed to create a set of stairs on the 1st floor, just in case a few or more zomboids decide to rip all your sheet ropes down. Because if all your tools, supplies, and materials are on the 2nd floor and you're stuck on the 1st, well from experience that can be a horrible situation, if not game ender.

You level metalworking also by transmuting large sheets in small and vice versa. The cost is time, propane and some material is lost in the process. But with all the cars, ftidges ovens etc it's hardly a problem. Also there is a mod that lets you dismantle any car, not just clunkers.

It could be nice it they also get bored of attacking it after awhile. Or damage themselves while smashing their fists and heads into a metal wall. He is correct though, the core design of the game rewards you for clearing zeds around your base and town area with mostly a trouble-free sanctuary zone by the time you have the skill reqs to build a fence. @KyleMiddleton7
@KyleMiddleton7 11 месяцев назад
OK this is really interesting, because I was sure I tested this. You can even see the footage in the video where I'm trying to shotgun zombies on the other side of barred windows, even broken ones, with no highlights showing up. Jumping into debug mode and doing some more testing, I think you're right and wrong. You CAN shoot through barred windows (once the glass is gone, obviously), however, you cannot shoot through barred windows that form the exterior wall of a pre existing world structure! Weird. If you smash out a wall and build a window and bar it, then you can shoot out of it. That is, unless you move a window into the window frame. Then even once the glass is gone, you can't shoot through it.

always found the cheesy methods a bit boring and refused to use them. some good old walls and bariades do jsut fine afterall. Would be cool if they added static defences like spike walls that degrade with each zombie impaling themselves. Zombie hordes naturaly spawning near the players base could also be cool. I find that defenes become useless quickly and hordes would add soemthing to work towards and prepare for which I feel this game needs(The lack of goals tends to be why I personally stop playing)

Upon testing whether zombies break windows by going through them, I concluded they do not. Upon further testing, however, I am now convinced zombies can in fact break player windows by going through them. 1) It takes a lot of zombies going through to break the window, maybe 10x more than would break a low fence. 2) Just like a low fence, the zombies have to be able to see you! If you're in debug mode and you're Ghosting, thousands of zombies pouring over low fences won't even break them. Weird.

I need a player-made patch (mod) that makes zombies take proportionate damage from destroying objects. Zombie*s* should be able to break through wooden walls by sacrificing some of their number. A single zombie should only destroy itself by trying. A single zombie being able to tear through an infinite number of steel walls is silly. I wish the devs would fix that, so building walls isn't a waste of time.

Hello, great video! What music is playing roughly up to the three minute mark? I believe I recognised it from Divinity Original Sin 2 or something. Can anyone help me?

I believe it's actually some Baldur's Gate 3. Dream Walk - Instrumental version. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jtGXo9PrTVo.html So, same composer.

If it's in your nature to do so, then I'd recommend enjoying the suffering, at least at first. When you've had some fun and some wild deaths, then you might want to check out some more guides. When all else fails, give the zombies a jolly good walking away from.

@@KyleMiddleton7 I died 2 times then I got the hang of it. Survived a few weeks now. Just cleared out a nice little gated community around louisville to set up an elaborate base. But the game started to get laggy after i explored and looted most of downtown west point.

@@sayuas4293 At present, the game is very, very affected by your level of zoom. If things start to stutter, try maintaining a tighter zoom, if you can.

i found a place with 3 trailers and a big empty area with logs and it has tall wooden fences all around and small metal gate which can be destroyed so if you defend that you got a safe base

Thank you for taking the easiest approach to understanding buildables and bases in this game. I had the same opinion retarding not worrying over which barricades have the most health when theyre all going to break if left unmaintained, but didnt know if it was ignorant or not lmao.

I just build walls and replace them if they break. If you pick a safe spot they won't break for years if ever. In a more semi realistic zomboid, I'd imagine if the zombies can't access the stairs they should have new AI to destroy the foundations of the building to cause it to collapse. They can already destroy built walls so it wouldn't be strange for them to destroy the foundations holding up a building. Just would be a pain to code building collapses.

Base defense is kind of weird. Building walls requires lot of time and resources, and since you're more likely to be out at the perimeter of your base building these walls, you'll likely just end up having to kill the zombies before the walls ever get built. I guess it works more in the case where you have the sandbox set for a higher rate of migration and zombie respawn though since eventually they'll make their way to your base. The problem for me is that most of my deaths don't come from defending my base, but from being out in the world, taking risks and making mistakes. I tend to make my base out in a farm house near the middle of the map where there's hardly any zombie spawn anyway, so typically the only thing I do is double plank each window and call it good. I don't even seal up the doors.

Agreed. If nothing else though, a big beautiful wall is something to keep yourself busy late game, at least for a bit.

Solo Wall/Construction/Base Building Tip: Get a bunch of watches. Set alarms (different times, or stagger 1 hour apart) on those watches and drop them in a big square around your construction site to form a perimeter that is always drawing Z's away from your walls/area/base. You can now build in relative peace, and once your done, Z's will aways been drawn away from the site, and almost never touch your walls.

We have blocked off our base with TV's. They are indestructible and the zombies just stand at them doing nothing. Probably the ultimate cheese but im a new player and it's made it easier to learn the ropes in this game without dropping the difficulty settings. Only downside is when you have a horde after u and you are over encumbered, you cant jump the fences to safety

Yup, before i knew any of these so called "cheat" like zombies pretending to not know where you are but keeps wondering into your place isn't. I quit when i cleared out my neighbourhood 3 times burning half the town just to wake up next day for a so happened to wondering by hored even when i turned off respawn.

you need to turn of migration because zombies migrate to low populated areas.

I've been in the gated community in the lower bottom corner of Muldraugh and after clearing I almost never see any zombies and simply sheeting up the lower windows has done the job for at least like 100hrs. I recently added 2 wooden boards to the lower windows for peace of mind. With just 2 boards you can still see out and it still lets light in. Make sure to put the boards on the outside to protect the windows. If you've cleared an area and know there are no zombies around. Sheets should be enough.

The trick of destroying tiles next to stairs can be combined with the trick that lets you jump over one tile gaps for an alternative to sheet ropes, I think.

All I’m getting from this is don’t give them a reason to come to your base, and nothing will be destroyed. Unless you use the destroy the way they can go up a story to get to you. And I heard bases on the water works as well since zombies are too dumb to swim to yea
