Jeez, I'm trying to imagine what someone who never climbed would think watching this. I mean that dude is going all the way to Finland to sit under a frozen rock in the middle of a wasteland, desperately trying to hold onto sharp granite cristals and cutting bits of shredded skin off his bleeding fingers. What a funny game we play.
@@giansalam3134 I am an Olympics junkie. I tuned in to see the climbing as a new sport in the games. I wound up watching the full comp online live, not just the ten minutes that made it on the broadcast. I saw the semis, and the finals all the way through. TBH, I became an instant fan of Brooke's that night, but also of the sport as well. I liked the vibe of the whole contest, and thought it was a good show. I kept watching the world cup events online all throughout the season, and got hooked as a fan of the sport. I started watching some of the various climbing channels, such as Marcus Midbo and a few others (his freeclimb with Alex H. blew my mind!). As I said, Brooke (and Janja, and Natalie and the others) drew me into the sport, and as I learned a bit about her I learned about her family. I wondered about her brother, since we don't see him in the comps. RU-vid, in the infinite wisdom of the algorithm, served up a few of Shawn's outdoor bouldering videos along the way. I saw him in a video with Marcus a few weeks back, and thought he was a really cool guy; as well as amazing to watch. Not long after that, Shawn started his own channel and I subscribed right away. I'm 57, and go about 300lb, so I'm not taking up climbing anytime soon; but I'm hooked on watching the sport. There are a lot of cool people to root for, and I can't take my eyes off it. I'm starting to feel like I have an idea how they do it, I just don't know where they get the radioactive spiders.
Having tarped up a few boulders myself in my days, I can very much respect your skill at creating such a nice tarp-house around the boulder. Definitely impressed by your tarping.
@@sploo13 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XLG3Hw7WlbM.html&ab_channel=MarkoSiivinen if you read the comments, his friend says he's good and still climbing
Still doing what he loves most: FAs of cool lines around the world. Can spot him a lot from partner's (so I've gathered and presuming here) photo ig-account.
Fun fact from a Finnish geologist: the rock type (rapakivi granite) was generated in a magma chamber of a Yellowstone-like supervolcano about 1.6 billion years ago.
@@mileshardin6906 Any hold can break at any time. I have not been able to do a detailed geological analysis of the holds. :) Granite as a whole erodes quite slowly, but this rapakivi variety could turn to rubble faster than other granites, maybe in a few thousand or even few hundred years. Depends on the internal structure, amount of cracks etc.
I feel like shawn is getting way more comfortable with the camera and its really nice because its not extra, it just feels like hes documenting his climbing for himself and its amazing to see
Yes. It is crazy, but it also set's some precedence. I only wait when the land owner realizes the gem on his property. Forestry, boulders. If nobody ever is willing to pay for use of roads (that will need some fixing eventually), or local moose-hunting society to be careful with a shooting sectors... No, don't get me wrong. But did Nalle or anyone "officially" ever pointed the purpose and use of that boulder particularly? I mean, did anybody informed the master and owner of the lands, why there is continuous stream of visitors on his property? That itself is irrelevent as we have Every-men-rights here in Finland. I only ask, that does people think anything when it was apparent the forest around the burden was felled about 20 years before it was ready for the timber. And it all was gone all the same. Why? PR problem? No worries, after some 5-10 years there will grow some bushes. Lol. Before that, the grudged Landowner may legally just blow out the Burden, and nobody won't accuse him, legally. Think about that, when coming here to project. Ask even, if its ok.
@@TristanCleveland Hes american, so its -25 celsius. But Finland usually doesnt go that low, so I think that was Celsius. Dont forget that Burden is out in the open, so with wind it can easily feel like -15°C.
Ok this video was sick af especially with the ending having Shawn seemingly stay some extra days completely alone to work it and hitting some insane links?!?! Plus the mtv cribs edit was 👌
@@andrewskerratt8353 You never know how long the final link will take! I think it still took Nalle quite long after doing it in two parts. It's too long from the document but might have been still over a year (correct if you remember). I hope for the send though! Would be great to have second send and hear the comment on the difficulty!
Man watching Shawn connecting those moves really puts in perspective how FRICKING STRONG he is, i just watched the Lattice BOD replica video where Will and Aidan tries to connect the first moves and just looks imposible
@@idovock7791 not saying it would surprise me if he’s already sent, but I’m pretty sure nalle had all the moves for like 3-4 years before actually sending.
These sessions fill my soul with joy and wonder. I found out my little town has a bouldering gym and I am inspired to get back to my roots of climbing trees, rocks, and buildings as a kiddo. Thanks Shawn. I don't think 25 is too old to start haha.
Shawn Rabatou's determination and passion for rock climbing is truly inspiring! Watching him tackle the challenging Burden of Dreams route with grace and strength is a testament to the power of the human spirit. Your video captures the beauty of this incredible journey and reminds us all to pursue our dreams no matter how difficult they may seem. Thank you for sharing this incredible moment, it has filled my heart with joy and motivation. I am so siked to see you give it more goes and send it. Also wish me luck at USA climbing bouldering divisionals coming up.
Checking my phone after climbing this morning and seeing Stephano announcing his send of Excalibur and your new video made my day. Lovin the try hard man. The progress in so few sessions on Burden is absolutely insane. Inspiring. The conditions juxtaposed with your attitude were just amazing. Keep up the hard word.
My very first time experiencing STOKED at 16:46 when Shawn stuck the first move, my goosebumps have yet to calm down... Gift us that epic trilogy of BOD, battling the hardest bloc in the raging snowstorm and finally take the victory by topping out the boulder under that snow buried tarp alongside with the spring 23 release of Mellow pleaseeeeee!!!🙏
Going after Nalle Hukkataival’s project, this is huge. I have been looking forward to seeing someone tackling this beauty for a long time. Shawn keeps pushing the boundaries of bouldering. It took 3 years for Nalle, setting this new milestones (9A) of bouldering. Wish you all the success. Once again, thanks for the inspiration ! PS: the mtv cribs blooper cracked me up 😂😂
You need some long johns for projecting in cold! Good work with the tarp btw. It's a short season and it looks like you managed to squeeze few more days into it!
It requires SO MUCH mental toughness to keep the motivation in these situations! And he sais he's destroyed while smiling. There's so much we can learn from you Shawn! Loving your contents!
Absolutely love the quality of the production Shawn, someone mentioned it below but you're becoming so much more comfortable with the camera, your funny personality is showing, and your love of climbing it's contagious! Keep the videos coming, it's like we're on the adventure with you. Merci de partager ça avec nous 😁
If it wasn't for the title, I'd have guessed this might be the send already. And even with the title I still got super excited with the last tries since it looked like it could actually go! Mad respect for you Shawn, to actually come here IN THE WINTER to project one of the hardest lines ever O_o And the attitude is pure gold. I'm in awe of this man.
Dude, absolutely sick video. I am loving seeing you on Burden, insane that you have it in 3 parts already and in such horrendous conditions. The MTV cribs was hilarious, made my day. You're such an inspiration and role model, love the videos. Was texting one of my friends from climbing while watching it and at 6:00 when you said this is the guest bedroom, feel free to crash with us if you are trying burden I texted I'll pick you up in 30, we're headed to Finland lol. Can't wait to see you give more sessions on it. Keep it up man, it'll go sometime soon. The try hard is such an inspiration, love it.
I've seen a few videos of you doing amazing things, and I was impressed. I think this is the second video I've seen of you working on this project, and it's really cool to see what goes into it. I'm amazed how much planning, and trial & error, goes into literally every finger placement and shift of balance or weight. It's also cool to see how much you enjoy the journey of getting there, not just the glory moment of topping it.
My skin is quite dry and hard, and I used to get splits like that. I would lightly tape over the split between sessions. I found it would keep the skin around the split softer, so that moving my finger wouldn't keep the split open. They healed up faster that way.
This is like professional skater levels of dedication to a send. Putting up that tarp and going out in the Finnish winter knowing damn well you may not send it this season is insane. I cannot even understand the mental fortitude it takes to do that. Absurd stuff
Home tour was 10/10. If the invite is out there, I will take that guest room and climb with you haha. Hopefully the fact that I climb approximately 10 grades beneath you is irrelevant. 😂 Sick video as always! 🤙
It's funny... I showed my friend the original documentary made of Nalle's FA of this boulder on December 9th, 2022 (I bought it right when it came out years ago). I mentioned after we watched it that I've just been waiting for someone like Shawn to try it lol. Literally the next day, you posted the first vid of you checking it out. You totally have this boulder dude, your fitness is crazy right now!
@@lucaa4480 I bought it on the lappnor project website years ago. As far as I know, you can still purchase it (i believe it was like 10-15$ usd), otherwise I am unfortunately not aware of a free upload
Showed this to a non climber friend and he asked why you didn’t just keep your feet on. Then I went and cried in the shower with my 200 dollar shoes I can’t send v9 in😊
I think Shaun’s passion for climbing really comes out in this vid. He is literally climbing in negative weather just to get an extra try on his project, mad respect.
It's incredible how hard these individual moves look and feel. And no matter if the grade is confirmed in the end or not - imagine the difficulty of e. g. Alphane shrinked into 5 moves.
You will get there one day since the path has been shown. After you have figured this puzzle out I will go and do it too....first spending a couple hours masoning some steps on the side of it.
I had just been convinced by a video about 'nutrition for climbers' that I will never up my game unless I take nutrition seriously... then I see Shawn eating Soba cup noodles on the way to projecting the hardest boulder on Earth.
So good! These videos are super good! So good that I actually would prefer some more uncuts of the actual moves honestly, not just crazy angles and slow mo’s of the moves. That can be the down side to trying to make a crazy edit. It seems like tons of goes weren’t included and just the interesting stuff is included, but I’d love to see it all! Also wild how quickly the first move went 🤯, obvs like 2 months of try’s is a long time but for burden that’s quick!
