I'm a contractor in Houston TX. we were doing a bathroom remodel for an older lady and I had to put some supplies in here garage, long story short she was about to throw an sbe sb-36 in the trash along with a cobra 142 gtl. Couldn't get it to turn on and thanks to your video I got it turned on and it works as fast as I can tell. If you would be interested in it send me a message.

Yeah , I remember that old radio , A buddy of mine had 2 of those , one at his house and 1 on his shrimp boat , he would talk to his wife while he was out on the water .....

Wow you really like a challenge buddy. I might need your help getting my swan 700cx to work. Currently recapping the whole thing. I too ran into a bad parts, disconnected wires, wrong component values and more. May take a whole year before I power it on.

Many issues can be found with just an eye on these rigs. Just takes a little patience. And always use the variac, not only saves the radio but the operator too. Thanks for the comment.

@@TheRadioShop I learned a lot from you Buddy, I knew this was going to be long and time consuming project but is all good I want to radio to get this radio back on the air because it was the first radio I had back in the day and am not totally concerned with the time it'll take except concerned with the availability of parts

Nice to see the SB-36 (Frontier Digital 500D) coming to life! As I mentioned, these radios came on the market before they were fully "debugged". Mine is still waiting, I pulled the bottom cover and looked if my VFO had the bottom cover, it has the original one. Mine has too much VFO drift, I see the oscillator has a 15V zener as the reference, which causes the voltage to vary with temperature and cause drift. I will replace with a 3-terminal voltage regulator. I have not used this for many years, but will take it on the bench and have a look at it again

Good idea on the regulator. 15 volts is just too high to stabilize. Thanks for commenting
