Sergei Prokofiev Piano sonata n°6 op.82 I. Allegro moderato 0:00 II. Allegretto 8:26 III. Tempo di valzer lentissimo 12:15 IV. Vivace 18:54 Sviatoslav Richter Live recording, Prague, 16.XI.1956
In my opinion, this sonata is greater than the best known 7th. I am very sesnitive to the unity brought by the overall treatment of the initial cells. Richter plays it in a marvellous way.
To me, Prokofiev is one of the greatest piano-composers, he belongs in the top with Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Bach, Debussy, and probably a few others. Richter, can't get away from this marvellous outstanding pianist, he hits me personally, sometimes I feel the urge to know why, but on the other hand, why not just listening and be satisfied with that?
Richter is unique in many ways. His interpretation feels almost like an improvisation. And therefore 100% not fake. He could play this piece 1000 times and all of them would be equally exceptional. I also sense like sometimes he is trying to squeeze impossible from the poor piano :) Richter's dynamic range is also absolutely unique. It takes me alway by surprise like "wait, I thought this was the yet loudest tone and you've just shown me there's no rules!". In a way he has piano under more control then Horowitz. But leaves more to the moment. Like he is discovering the music right now. Let's try what is possible this time!
Going back and forth between this one and the Ritcher's Carnegie Hall recording a decade or so latter, where he he pushed the tempo so far it almost loses recignizability in parts, but somehow becomes Even more powerful and (possibly) Itself.
El último movimiento aparece en algún lado del documental sobre Richter por Bruno Monsaingeon. Prokofiev, lo describe Richter, como a un tipo duro. Genio..!!! el allegretto es mi movimiento preferido.
it's an unfortunate photo in many ways - because I think it has been instrumental in portraying Richter as a 'banging' pianist with little or no finesse. And yet he can be subtle. You may disagree with me but if you do then you will be unwittingly disagreeing with someone who is from the lineage of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky (through Nikolaev).
