Can someone please tell me why a prom is such a big deal in America? I'm from the Netherlands and most schools don't have a prom.

for the same reasons some hispanics spend a lot of money for quinceneras. For a lot of people, it'/s marker. You're officially an adult and it's toward the end of the year and a lot of your friends are going to be going to other states for college. A lot of important things happen while you're in high school (voting, driving, dating, working, etc) and it's a celebration.
