This video is a complete step by step process of:
1- Checking the fluid level on a Promaster 62TE Automatic Transmission,
2- Draining the fluid
3- Removing the oil pan
4- Filter Removal
5- Gasket Removal
6- Installation of New Filter- Autozone Duralast Part #TF411- $21.99
7- Installation of New Dorman Transmission Oil Pan Part#265-833 with drain plug- $49.99
8- Fluid Replacement with Mopar ATF+4 Transmission (MS-9602) 6qts-$12/qt=$72
Vehicle used in video-2018 Ram Promaster 3500 Extended 3.6LPentastar Gas with 44,500 miles (1st transmission service) Manufacturer recommends service @ 60k miles.
Torque setting for 12- Pan Bolts- 9ft/lbs-12Nm
Dorman Drain Plug 18-20ft/lbs. 24-27Nm
Tools needed-
8mm Socket, 4"-6' extension, 3/8" ratchet, T25 Torx Bit, Torque Wrench with range down to 9ft/lbs- 12Nm, gasket scraper/razor blade
Miscellaneous items:
Autozone Siphon Pump $6.99
Brake Cleaner $3.99
Funnel- $2
Pourspout- $5.69
36" Dipstick Ziptie - Free from Kip (non-autographed)
DIY Cost $163
Dealership Quote $325-Dealership also said they could do the job and would have to send me to another location, couldn't tell me if there would be other charges, Could give me a time estimate/lead time. While doing this maintenance, I found several damaged clips that another RAM Dealership did while doing a radiator repair and fan recall. I don't trust dealership repairs and do everything possible unless it's a warranty job but even then I still cringe.
Huge shout out to Kip from Promasters Only!! Tell him Ray sent you and get the coffee ready.

Excellent video. What's insane is that the dealership said i had the transmission pan cover leaking. Had an appointment and took it in and they have not even started on it yet. And here i watch your video of you doing this without a lift and you are done. Can't stand dealerships. Great work sir.

Very good! I added 2 foot of 1/2 PEX pipe to a regular funnel using heat gun to reach filing point also I used Home depot concrete mixing pan to contain the oil. ALso installed a bottom pan with drain now. I used 5/16 ice maker tubing for the dipstick as the Wire-tight one bends or go over the stop sometimes.

I have a 2017 Ram Promaster 3500. Did the same pan as you. Dump out 4 qts every 15-20,000. Fluid always pink. Did this on my Lazy Daze too and had 128,000 on trans when I sold it. No issues. Nice video.

Great video! I just bought a 2021 ProMaster 2500 159 with 19,500 miles and will likely do this soon, unless they do it as part of the 44A recall, which I am getting done in a couple of weeks.

Good video. For the people out there who own a 2022 Promaster, be aware that the transmission is very different. There is no bottom pan and there is not a fill port as shown. Looks like there may be a drain plug and there is a plastic cover at the front.

@@CorndogCaravan you missed the steps on how to remove the E-Guard. Just kidding. Obviously, I had a few more steps to take with my project because of the skid plate. The most frustrating part of the whole fluid change was the goop covering the bolt heads. I finally got out a wire brush to get them cleaned off

Thank you for the video! I’m curious about the 4 1/8” cold line on the dipstick. I can’t find any info online where anyone else has seen that, but after doing a drain and fill with 5.5qt I am just below 4” at cold temp. Everyone seems to be in the 50-80mm range. Has me a bit worried that I added too much, but I did let it drain for awhile and only added the recommended 5.5qt.
@reallytho99
@reallytho99 10 месяцев назад
Mine seems to be about 5 1/4" cold in nice 70 degree weather after sitting a day. Changing the filter and fluid this week, I'll see if it is the same after and how much comes out.

some people use the motor oil dipstick and make scoring marks for the transmission levels (cold/hot)
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan Год назад
Yep that works as well except ours has a stainless steel braided dipstick with a very short tip so we couldn't score it.

there is a joker at the factory that smears the undercoat on the bolts , not just the pan bolts but the bell housing bolts and the mount bolts ,sway bar endlink bolts too. Its usually just on one or two of the flats. It's only there to slow down the tech thats working on it and to make @illusionauto mad at dealerships for taking too long to reseal their pan.

nicely done. Thanks for the tips. My only question is why you didn't use any gloves in the process? Everything was meticulously thought out and done, but oil on the hands..
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan Год назад
Great question, I had some gloves ready but never used them. For the most part my hands stayed clean until I started tearing into the old filter. The fluid wasn't that dirty compared to engine oil and cleaned up easily.

Hello Ray, you make good vetoes. Can you tell me if I should use the TOW HAUL mode on my transmission when in the mountains. Is it better or worse for the transmission. Thanks I've learned so much. Guy
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan Год назад
I always smash that Tow/haul button when driving in hilly or mountains. It helps with the shift points. Thanks for question and compliment.
@Bellasafari
@Bellasafari Год назад
I asked my mechanic if I should use the Tow/haul on mtn passes. He said no, but he’s from Texas😂- Going over passes my 2500 RPMS at 4 and will not go over 40mph… AND the tranny does slip some. Do you think the tow/haul will help with this? We spent the summer in the mountains at 11k ft.
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan Год назад
@@Bellasafari The tow/haul shouldn't prevent slippage. There's no trophy for getting up hills at a faster speed so we don't push it.

I was just looking into changing the transmission fluid and your tutorial just came in on time! TY! I'd like to know more about using the break cleaner. Where did you use the break cleaner? Also, you mention cleaning off the RTV glue, do we need to apply rtv glue when putting back the new pan?
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan Год назад
The brake cleaner was used to clean the metal where the new gasket goes between the transmission a d the pan. Most folks I've seen that use the RTV sealant complain about leaks. My filter came with a new rubber gasket but the Felpro brand gaskets are like $9 on Amazon. 99% of the original RztV material stayed attached to the old oil pan. Spray the cleaner on a soft cloth and wipe.

I would never go by factory recommended intervals. I have a Chrysler 200, same transmission, I flush and change the filter every 30k. At the dealership these transmission burned up repeatedly in minivans, sometimes in Journeys, and never in the Avengers and 200s. Pro masters are far heavier than a minivan, I would do every 15k in one of these
@Cocora22

Is the transmission fluid change separate from the front differential fluid change? Is there a front differential. We have a 2021 and it's front wheel drive so no rear. diff. I've done several oil changes and we are. close to needing this service. I've done my Colorado Front and rear diff, plus transfer case plus transmission. Just trying to figure out if this has a differential in the front PLUS the transmission.
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan Год назад
No diff on the Promaster. I haven't seen the new 9 speed tranny yet but expect the pan location to be the same.
@shanec.7105
@shanec.7105 Год назад
did your Dorman pan come with a drain plug with copper gasket on it? Does yours leak at the drain plug? mine leaks no matter what I do. pan is good but the drain plug has a leak that when I wipe with a towel, there is red fluid on it. Thinking of going back to the stock pan and return the junk.
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan Год назад
I never removed the drain plug and believe it does have a crush washer but I did have to torque mine to 18-20 ft/pd before I added the transmission fluid. It was nowhere close to being torqued properly when it arrived and didn't expect it to be.
@chrisschiel6741
@chrisschiel6741 6 месяцев назад
Couldn't you just measure (exactly) the amount of fluid you take out And replace the same amount.
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan 6 месяцев назад
Yes but if transmission had the improper amount high or low it's still important to measure using the dipstick. I was in the middle of nowhere when I did this project and don't carry extra empty containers as we travel fulltime. What if I had spilled some fluid? My measurements would have been off. It seems that most people drain approximately 5.5 it's when doing this. We are at 68k miles and still going strong and quiet.

I have a 2021 promaster 3500 and was riding with my dog and he hit the gear shift and sent it in reverse. I heard a clunck and i stopped and check it out. Everything seems to shift fine but do you think it hurt the transmission?
@CorndogCaravan
@CorndogCaravan Год назад
I suspect that it did but we've had friends do the same in their van and so far it's still running. I don't know why they don't have a button to prevent this. The filter will catch the shards.
