Wow, just wow. Thank you for showing this! Read Prometheus Bound and wanted to check if there's an adaptation on youtube. Found this and, man, am I lucky to stumble upon this amazing piece of animation! Someone wrote that it's a masterpiece - it is! I think Aeschylus, or whoever wrote the original, would love this. Really liked the little homage to Blake's Urizen, too.

Thank you and I'm glad you found it. I hope Aeschylus would have liked it. I know things take on totally different meanings over the centuries, but I think the rebellious spirit captured in the words stays pretty much the same.

@manateeidol
@manateeidol 3 года назад
@@rascalman7 Yes, I used to think about doing this, though raising the money and getting the time would be impossible I think (for this animator at least). Perhaps someone else will do this one day. Though in a way, like Percy Shelley, I kind of like that this is where we leave the story, as I don't quite buy the reconciliation with Zeus when he is released.

Perhaps Promethus fell in love with a human. We can be quite fetching to the gods. Then he created an act of treason and taught man all sorts of technology, weaponry and fire(knowledge). In a twist of fate, it is also Man's downfall, so who was right? You decide!

beautiful imagery, really. have you read the nietzschean interpretation of aeschylus' prometheus in the birth of tragedy? to you, what was significance of the phrase "be careful not to hurt yourself" and what does the donnning of the mask imply in the end? please make more, oedipus maybe?
@manateeidol
@manateeidol 2 года назад
Thanks, James. It's been a while since I read all the theories, but I had in mind the biblical parallels at the time, and that the flood and Prometheus' story had some common ground. And I always liked the concept that the omnipotent god, whoever it may be, wasn't on the side of mankind and could even be hostile. The phrase "be careful not to hurt yourself" in the play was a sarcastic aside to the Chorus as I recall, as in "don't get involved. Run away and leave me to my punishment and keep your hands clean" sort of thing. But I had Prometheus say it to humankind or the spectator, and overlaid it with images of man taking on the mantle of Prometheus, so that when he repeats it a second time he really meant it- don't hurt yourself. In the sense that fire brings many destructive things as well as knowledge. And finally, I had Prometheus be transformed into the roots of the play and become a theatre mask, himself made from clay and imbued with fire just as he had done at the beginning of the film. So the creation of the mask and the donning of the mask is indeed man taking on the mantle of Prometheus. In that sense it has a little of Nietzsche's theory in it I guess. Though I can't recall if that was in my mind at the time.

I question whether Prometheus is not punished for his ignorance as much as his hubris?
@manateeidol
@manateeidol 5 лет назад
Hello. I guess the interpretation differs with each source, and perhaps the writer's agenda. I can't recall reading that particular viewpoint in my research, but I may have missed it. I guess I was already looking at it from my own angle. I saw a certain arrogance in Prometheus, but I was attracted to the idea of him as a heroic crusader for knowledge and enlightenment. And that it was the jealousies and hubris of Zeus that led to the punishment. But there is the added twist that Prometheus had foreknowledge of his punishment but chose to do it anyway.
@deepestallies
@deepestallies 5 лет назад
manateeidol interesting take. My sense after reading the Lattimore version is Prometheus placed man in “blind hopes” and caused them to “cease foreseeing doom”, meaning he alone had the ability to extricate man from the tyranny than Zeus has bestowed upon him as punishment.
@manateeidol
@manateeidol 3 года назад
@Gustavus Mercurius I guess in most Greek plays there is a deference to Zeus, but I was more drawn to this one because he's depicted as a tyrant. That's why he's been adopted by the Romantics and people ever since. Not many people are believers in Zeus these days but I guess there's a discussion to be had about what I and others mean beyond that. But I've always been on the side of Prometheus for sure.
