This version of The Planets is magical. I am 63 and it is the most rousing, beautiful, powerful performance of this piece I have ever heard. The young orchestra are a wonder to listen to. Their youth gives the work a spontaneous vigour all it`s own.

Mars is absolutely exceptional, I have also never seen an orchestra this size actually perform Holst`s masterpiece. Edward Gardner`s direction of the orchestra is so filled with empathy and care, and those young musicians, they literally bring tears to my eyes. The whole performance is miraculous So glad you, and many others, feel the same love for this performance.@@sjdpfisvrj

See......this is why I love watching these orchestrational presentations. It's amazing to see the musicians "becoming" the music they are so painstakingly generating. One cannot simply "play" the planets; you have to realize you "are" those planets you are representing. Especially towards the end of Mars, you could feel the dedicated intensity needed to reproduce this outstanding finale. The god of War, turned these musicians into his own personal army of FEARLESS warriors! GREAT!

I'm sure I'm not the first person to make this observation, but...this suite is so dang cinematic. I hear Star Wars (and Die Hard) in Mars, Braveheart in Jupiter, Raiders of the Lost Ark in Saturn... I can only imagine that many film score composers were influenced by Holst's work. The Planets suite is so gripping and visceral. What a pleasure to have the entire suite in one performance. Thank you, uploader.
@Dynam3
@Dynam3 Год назад
It's undeniable that a lot of film composers take inspiration from classical music. Often films have classical music as "placeholders" for sound in scenes before the score has been composed so the composer often ends up making something very similar. In 2001: A space odyssey (apparently) Kubrick (director) liked the placeholder music in the opening scene (Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss) so much that he ended up putting it in the movie instead of what his composer had made. Another interesting example of obvious inspiration is star wars main theme inspired by King's Row by Korngold (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QKOYgr-gWZE.html) Every musician is inspired by some other music, but I do personally dislike how blatantly film composers often "copy" classical music and end up being much more known, while the classical piece gets lost in obscurity.
@kerrycanfield332
@kerrycanfield332 11 месяцев назад
OTOH, have you ever noticed that there is *always* a dramatic “classical” segment in the credits of almost any major movie you can think of? Sometimes it’s the totally final music, oft times it’s not. But it’s always there somewhere at the end. Nothing seals the gravitas of the drama like the classical style.
@lightspeed1755
@lightspeed1755 11 месяцев назад
@@kerrycanfield332 this is often the 'showcase' for the composer's work, where he/she is allowed to sting together a version of the theme(s) that flow musically uninterrupted (without having to match action). If you go back far enough (in the days when the majority of the credits rolled at the opening) there were even overtures that played entirely before the film even started i.e. Lawrence of Arabia (which also has a musical intermission if I remember correctly).

It’s called the Planets. Not dwarf Planets. Also, Pluto hasn’t been discovered until the 30s I believe

I noted on the original upload of this video how well Gardner's facial expressions match the tenor of the particular section he's conducting: stern on "Mars, Bringer of War", soft and gentle on "Venus, Bringer of Peace", roguish and mischievous on "Mercury, Messenger of the Gods".

@martyfingerpickingclassact2205
Absolutely the best rendition of the Planets performed. Strength in numbers as some orchestras are thinner in their ranks, depleting the depth, and in part, this is where this performance shines. The precision and flow is to the credit of the Maestro, but also, his connection with the whole orchestra.

AMAZING. These fantastically talented young musicians under the guidance of Edward Gardner have produced in my mind the finest version of Holst’s Planet Suite, I've always marvelled at how an orchestra can concordinate their notes. Today, I've seen they don't but modulate their tones to meet their fellow musicians to create a pleasant harmony.......how else are they to play? When you think about it, musicians can't play the exact same note at the EXACT same time multiplied by that number by ten or more. Swure, after lots of practice maybe two or three people could play the same note at the exact same time but more than than that, you're into the realm of fantasy.

i'M NOT, A TRAINED MUSICIAN BUT--IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE PRINTED MUSIC SHEETS, WHICH THEY ALL HAVE. SO THEY ALL WORK FROM THE SAME MUSIC SHEETS, EVERY NOTE IS IN VIEW. tHATS WHY THEY ARE TRAINED AND ADVISED FOR SO MANY YEARS' AND SO IS THE CONDUCTORS LEADERSHIP, WITH HIS BATON.. I THINK YOU'LL AGREE, THE SYSTEM WORKS.

So many good familymemories with this fantastic music. 😢 But they still live in my heart, and the wonderfull music we listened to all those years togeather everyday made my life so much better. Especially when i think of my sweet daddy. He just knew what to put on the old grammophone turntable... Nice to meet other musiclovers from everywhere... Jesus bless you. Never loose your melody in lufe.
