YES!! Plus it lessens the chance of not getting the prong links improperly installed. That seems to be the main cause for fails and needing a back-up clip. I bend metal by hand for work and even I find squeezing the prongs awkward. Steel buckle is much better!

LOL! I can relate on a few levels. I have a welding and wood shop, so like your husband, the all in, full custom is the first instinct. But, I wanted universal, off the shelf and inexpensive with no faffing around. My designer brain always wants to make improvements. But my practical brain also tries to temper that with the KISS rule. I considered cable/zip ties for 3 seconds. But they are susceptible to abrasion and degrade from chemical and UV exposure, so were quickly eliminated from the test list.

This will help. You want to keep as many prong links as possible for the collar to work as intended as well as distribute the pressure across as many points as possible. As long as there's enough chain left to still provide the action, you can install the quick link down quite far on the action chain.

If you are down to 6 links, I would order the smaller one. I like at least 8 links in place.

I'm not sure what the smallest quicklink you have found is. Stainless marine quick links can get fairly small. And they have different shapes. I think I will look into it and see if I can find one that works for me.

RE: The smaller chains. The smallest link I could find at the local shop was a 1/8 inch. (sorry metric folks, I don't have the equivalent size link.) Perhaps elsewhere in the world, there are smaller ones (Please post here if you find one!) Alternates for the smaller chains could be key ring carabiners. A company called Nite Ize makes some very small double ended ones. These may be stronger and easier for some people to employ as the heavy duty key rings can be pretty hard on the fingernails! 😁 There are also small accessory carabiners with a twist barrel closure that are meant to hang gear of a backpack, but they tend to be a bit too big I think, but YMMV. In both cases, you should find a way to fix the opening so it doesn't open accidentally. Nite Ize may make a unit that locks and the accessory carabiners can be bent a bit to keep the brass barrel from unscrewing. Or, once happy with the fit, a drop of Locktite or super glue would hold it. The heavy key ring Robert used would certainly work as the pressure is mostly on the chain itself and no one should be yanking on these collar anyway! **Update: I saw online there are smaller quick links, in metric sizes. And they were available in even smaller 2mm sizes (1/8" = 3.175mm) So that's a great option. Hopefully available in Europe and North Am. That small a size may not be commonly available in the local shop, but could be ordered.

RE: Quick Link. Once you've got it sized correctly, tighten the Quick Link nut with a wrench or pliers. Finger tight isn't quite enough in my testing and it could, surprisingly, rattle loose.

RE: Folks with the HS NeckTech collars without the action chain. This mod it for the 'usual' style prongs, so this mod won't work. I'll have a look at pics of them, but I don't have one to play with, so anything I think of, I'll post. But it will just be a guesstimate. For those with the knock-off prongs: Please, most of them are poor copies made with no knowledge or regard for the proper design and quality of the HS prongs. Some have nylon webbing for the action chain as a cheap manufacturing choice. And many of the ones I've seen, the prongs are sharp and sometimes not even oriented the correct way. I realize the HS ones aren't cheap. But wait, save up a bit more and get the proper ones. Buy once, cry once, as they say.

Yep, seems to be an unfortunately very common issue! I put some other tips in my comment on here.

That'll work, but I'd only use it temporarily. Plastics tend to breakdown/weaken with exposure to UV's from the sun and chemical exposure (natural oils from the dogs coat).

People have talked about zip ties, but that seems like a waste to adjust all the time. Wire keychains are looking interesting. They're cheap on Amazon and come in huge packs so you have backups.

If you have enough prong links so the collar is just a bit too loose, the quick link will insert through the chain quite close to the leash attachment ring/swivel. On my dog, the quick link is only down two chain links on either side, from the attachment ring so there's still lots of chain for the 'action'. I think Robert just had it quite a bit further down than will be needed just for demonstration purposes. It's a pretty hard thing to film. 😊👍

Also, once the collar is properly snug, there isn't a need for a huge amount of action. The great thing about the prong collars is you only need a light pop or tug. They should never be yanked. So as long as there's a couple inches between the rings the chain goes through on the either side of the collar, that should be plenty of room for actuating it.

Yep, that's another way to get it custom fit! Just need to watch for wear on the paracord.

Yes, leash still goes on the original attachment ring/swivel. The quick link will be just below it. On my dog, it's only two chain links down on each side from the swivel so there's still lots of length on the chain for the 'action'.

I had posted a reply, but was thinking of the off brand prongs that I've see with a strap instead of the chain, for the action/attachment point. These cheap, terribly made knock offs should be avoided!!! Most of them I've seen are poor copies and have been made with ignorance to the purpose. I've look at the HS catalog. Is yours one of the ones with the metal links with the small, triangular prongs? Kinda looks like a wrist watch band. I'm not a fan of these, as I they don't seem to distribute the pressure over the circumference of the neck and still, like a flat collar, focus the pressure more on the front of the throat. However, I've not used one so I'm just making assumptions based of looking at them in pics. But I also understand that you've got one and it's not cheap to just toss it and get a standard style HS Prong. Let my look at the pics more and see if I can make a suggestion. 👍

@@sarahhatouka1166 Only thing I can see doing is cutting off the straps and using a section of chain and a quick link to convert that one to the cinching style. HOWEVER.... I can't see the collar well enough to say if the rings on either side would work with chain. I think, realistically, I'd sell the one you have and get the version with the cinch/ Martingale style chain, like in the video. Better than chancing ruining the one only to have to buy a new one anyway. At least you could sell yours to help pay for the new one.

Yes, but you should still have a small amount of play sufficient to operate the synch function depending on where you add the quicklink.

If it fits through the "action" chain links, probably. There are the ones they sell for clipping accessories to back packs. But they may be too long and/or bend over time. If you go with it, use locktite on the threads or bend it slightly so the brass barrel nut doesn't come loose, which they do. If it's a spring opening one, I'd be very concerned about it popping open. Been there, suffered that. I made some other suggestion in my own comment and replies. Let us know if you have a carabiner that works. 👍

I've got a remote collar that came with the shock cord and cam lock. Hated it as it caught on branches and got stretched out quickly. The plastic cam lock also broke after the third time. but if it's working for you, great!

@@wingnutbert9685 Yes it is working great. I use it on prong collar and on e-collar and it has not streched out or broke. I bought it from hiking/climbing store(cam lock) and cord from nautical store and it works perfect. Cord was less than 2€ and 4 cam locks were arround 3€.

They can be pretty hard for some to get apart. I highly recommend getting a metal buckle. There are a few ones made for prongs. They can be added in and replace a prong section or two to get close to the fit. Then fine tune with the method in the video.

Actually the issue is that the 2.25 can still need adjustments.

It's simple manufacturing economics. If they made prongs in 1mm increments, the cost of manufacturing, overhead, inventory holding would go through the roof. And the price would go way up accordingly. Plus, there would still always be dogs that would be just between size. And dogs all having uniform neck sizes isn't gonna happen. 😁 So this is the cheap, easy way to fix the issue. Ultimately, I'd love HS to see this and suggest it to their customers and/or even start including an appropriate size Quick Link with all the collars. Would be a cheap thing to offer and likely increase sales and get folks to use ones they have but don't use due to bad fit.

That's great. Glad it worked for you too! It's pretty simple. I use the links when making my own leashes. The bad fit was driving me nuts and I just sat on the hall bench one day before a walk and put two and two together. First was a nut and bolt. Too finicky and common bolts that small are very strong with side loading in that situation. They also needed a second jam nut. Then I grabbed a key ring. Great but the heavy duty ones are pretty tough to get on the links even with my ridiculously tough fingernails! LOL! Then looking at the Quick Links on my DIY leashes, the the light bulb went off. Glad it worked for you and your pooch! My American Bully has a very short, smooth coat and works well for keeping it in place on her stump of a neck! LOL!

What's unethical? Metal is sustainable to produce. It will likely last forever, in this application, therefore minimizing waste. Available off the shelf, so preventing unnecessary shipping pollution. By no means is it perfectly earth friendly. But it's definitely not terrible. 👍
