Anybody fluent in another language outside of English knows there are certain words and vernacular inherent to native speakers that gets translated differently/weirdly through translation software either from English to Japanese or Japanese to English. The Japanese comments that I've read were definitely not in line with the racist rhetoric of what I expect as westerners cosplaying as Japanese online. Even if a Japanese comment did come from the west, there are people that are fluent in more than one language. This game is being marketed and sold globally so there's going to be global opinions on the game.

However, when it became known that some were falsifying history by stating on Wikipedia and Britannica that Yasuke was a samurai and distorting Japanese history, they say NO to these historical revisionists.

Even though AC was never 100% historically accurate, up untill Syndicate they tried their best to atleast have accurate architecture and period appropriate details like furniture, behaviour of the NPC's, music etc. etc. I have several theories on why Ubisoft changed their mind on making a game set in Japan. 1-They are struggling for ideas. 2-Yasuke's existence wasn't commonly known untill 2020-2021 I'd say. So ubisoft being in their woke phase couldn't push wokeness for Japan right off the gate like they did for Odyssey and Valhalla. Cassandra and female Evor are pretty masculine looking gals, it wouldn't make sense for them to portray a Japanese woman in a masculine manner, it would be too obvious of a DEI insert. So they would have to make Naoe's face unattractive to "punish the male gaze" and it wouldn't fly with fans, it would have been too obvious considering every other woke game studios are doing it and catching flack for it. The popularity increase of Yasuke was a godsend for them, the perfect way to use vague history and lack of detailed records to insert DEI in a Japanese game, while having some bases of doing so. 3)-Ubisoft was saving Japan for a "rainy days". For them it's a slam dunk, instant revival of interest. After Mirage and the 11 people that actually played it, things may have been dire for Ubi. 4) They knew a game in Japan would be a challenge to make, given the somewhat pedantical nature of how Japanese people aproach history, especially for a franchise that is known for making kind of accurate historic depictions in terms of settings and cultural elements. Those are the reasons that i think are the most possible ones on why they changed their mind... it could also be combination of multiple ones or some unknown ones, but that seems most plausible to me.

In a game/show/anime there can be depictions or mechanics to entertain like being able to stop time or rewind time in the game. That has nothing to do with the actual story. Who cares if this is unrealistic. However, in fiction you promote false narratives that can be considered propaganda (there's a group pushing a certain narrative). Usually the side that the propaganda is being pushed on will push back. What about a game that the protagonist denies the holocaust? (Just a game? Jewish people would be very angry) or a protagonist decides to assassinate (cull humans) because of their belief of the genetic inferiority of a certain race or sexual identity or orientation, (Just a game? whoever identifies with the culled race/identity would be very angry.) Or a game that denies the certain mass shootings? (Just a game? there was a recent lawsuit that suggests if you make this game you will get sued for everything you have) or a historical fiction where a white( swap out to any race) protagonist takes credit of black (swap out to any race) achievements in history. Just a game is not a justification of pushing propaganda. To add, the unfortunate state of the US is that there are those that believe shows/anime/games are truth and can't fathom that maybe the sources tell the complete opposite or a very different story adds more importance to maybe there is a responsibility to provide accurate narratives. If they wanted to make a tribute to Yasuke they could have told his story as it should and say that when Nobunaga took him he got a word that the order of the ancients would kill him and make that he search for the assassin's order (the Shinobi in Japan) to try to stop the order of the ancients and he learn from the assassin's how to kill that would have been a good story taking Yasuke in a path more coherent than just by magic make him a samurai

Has a AC fan from the first game in 2007, to me Assassin's Creed deals with 80% Fact (True History) and 20% Fiction. The 80% is true historical accuracy and the 20% is fiction because certain items, people, places, and interactions are fiction, and never took place in actual history. Also, to add for AC Unity, I like the parkour system, it was a little more clean in parkour and to me that the parkour was going to get even better for future installments of Assassin's Creed. But guess what they did not improve the parkour in the new AC games and that really was upsetting because Parkour is part of the Assassin's when you run towards your target or even to run and hide in plain sight.
