This fall, California voters could have the final say on whether to toughen penalties on crimes like shoplifting here in the Golden State.
A new initiative to roll back Proposition 47 has now officially qualified for the November ballot after garnering nearly 1,000,000 signatures.
Prop 47, passed back in 2014, re-classified certain low-level drug and theft offenses to misdemeanors.

This November, I'll be voting Republican for every office. We need to stop this nonsense from soft-on-crime politicians!

Your take is stupid because Republican lead states are just as bad

I moved out of CA in 2022 because I couldn't stand the crime anymore, among other things. I was a multi-generational Californian and I hated to leave but had to for quality of life. I saw a huge downturn in my city (Sacramento) very soon after Prop 47. My neighborhood was surrounded by homeless, and they would roam the neighborhood at night stealing whatever they could find. Enough "low level" crime ruins life for everyone. In two years in my new town in the Midwest, I have not seen one homeless person or one theft. I know it exists, but it's much rarer. Repeal 47!

I support stricter rules to enhance law and order. Pretty much every law-abiding taxpayer in the state of California is concerned about crime rates and believe stronger regulations are necessary to justify the high taxes, or else they say " *Adios California, Hola Texas!* "

The immigration of refugees to Texas should be regulated, if only to support states rights and protect quality of life

If course they can't offer the smart solution and keep drug offenses misdemeanors and crack down on theft.

One ironic thing is that so many drug users are dying or narrowly escaping death due to timely administration of naloxone. There are lots of unintended negative consequences of prop 47 but the drug part is wreaking havoc on the humans who are more easily obtaining and using drugs.

Gov Newsom has been steadfastly opposed to any Prop 47 revisions because of a thorough analysis by his office that Restorative Justice does work. It takes time however, plus increased community investment that was slowed by the pandemic. Many lives have been turned around by giving low-level offenders a second chance. Putting people in prison of stealing a jacket or a pair of shoes only puts stress on the criminal justice system; and it creates a bad record for people that makes them unemployable. Let's give Prop 47 time to work, let's give poor and disadvantaged people a chance to rise.

Here's an idea for them: don't steal in the first place.

If in custody the government already had to provide medical and psychiatric services, it's call a duty of care. Smashing glass and stealing high end products is well over the $900.00 mark & Dealing any illegal drugs is already a felony. Trying to stack charges ( which they already do,) on someone is criminal in of itself. This proposal is ludicrous. Vote no. Demand that government do their jobs effectively and within the constitutional rights for all.

Your comment is a beautiful essay on why California is so messed up and crime is out of control. Open your eyes and brighten up.
