Prop Design. Make a Rowboat Prop for the Stage.

In this video I'll show you how we, at BLC Theatre, made a prop rowboat for the stage. We used our rowboat prop for an adaptation of "Anne of Green Gables", but this is the kind of prop that could show up in any number of classic plays like "Peter Pan" or "Treasure Island" etc.

Thank you for taking the effort and the time to share how you made this prop. It was so clear and simple. I actually used this video to make a boat for a stage production myself. But I didn’t use 2x4’s as those are not available in my country. We ended up just using 2 pcs of 3/4” plywood sandwiched to create the braces. !!! Great little build. You should consider making this boat available for rent in your area.!! Atleast you can make back what u spent on materials.

Awesome man, I’m a student in highschool right now and I’m in stage craft and we’re choosing an aspect of theater to do a project on and I’m doing set design. I need to build a boat for the set and this will be super helpful.

Thanks very much for the design, but if you ever build again, start the boards at the bottom and then overlap as you work your way to the top. That is the way most wooden boats are built so water does not end up "sitting" on the seams. (obviously no mater which way you lap them, they have to be water tight). Will be building a version shortly.

Aw, shoot. Sorry, I don't. I think it was all built with materials that we had in stock, so there was never a receipt. The price would almost certainly be higher now anyways since this was a pre-covid show.

Hi Sean. That's a great question. We happen to be using the boat for our current show, so I was able to take a measurement. With the castors on, the boat stands 18 1/2 inches tall from the floor. Without the castors the boat itself is 16 inches vertically. Hope this helps.

What did you use to attach the lauan to the side supports? I know you said staples but what size staples and how did you get them in (electric, pneumatic or manual stapler)? Thanks

Oh man. I'm going by memory here. I'm sure I used 1/4 crown staples and I used a pneumatic staple gun. I'm fuzzy on the length, but they were probably 1 inch long.

Going of your drawing the final dimensions of the boat are 4’ wide by 8’ long, does that sound correct? I’m planning on making this for little mermaid jr. and may want to size it down

Yeah, that sounds right. I cut the top out of a sheet of plywood with those dimensions, so if my memory serves me, that's what I did. 4' x 8' sounds correct.

I'm curious on how the dimensions are for each piece, my and my father in law are trying to get a boat down for the play "Holes" and to have one that can be reused and we are scratching our heads at possible dimensions

Hi Jonathan. Tell me a little bit more about what you need the dimensions to be. As for me. I just spitballed at the dimensions and came up with the boat size that I did. For instance, if you need your boat to be able to fit through a door on stage, then you'd make sure that the boat is less wide than the door, etc. I have limited wing space in my theatre, so I didn't want the boat to take up too big of a footprint, however it is simple enough to just lean the boat onto it's side to store it off stage. Anyways...This video is to help people in a method, but folks can certainly make it as wide, long, or as deep as they need it to be. Hope the video is helpful though. We run on specifics, so like.. the angle degree, the distance from bottom to tip, how the bracings we're made and the dimensions of them.. usually when we have those kinds of dimensions we can adjust up or down accordingly to fit the stage/door space. We will use what we can visually see if your design and calculate what we can. Your boat is amazingly designed, and I hope we can bang one out that looks half as good!

How did you figure out the curve cut to do for the braces?

You're going to hate me for this, but honestly we just eyeballed it. I came up with a curve that I thought would look right, and then went with it for the rest of the braces

Hi GC Bunky. Those were just shaped out of 1" x6" pine, if memory serves.

How tall are the braces

Greetings. We just put the boat away into storage so I can't really help you at the moment. We did just use it for our version of Pinocchio. This prop gets a lot of use by us. I think that if you take an educated guess on the height of the braces, you'll be in the ball park.
