You basically got the song idea right. Apparently the singer was present at a game with his niece where such a display (soldiers rappelling) happened. Propaghandi are somewhat of an anarcho-leftist band so you can imagine how they viewed such a display. Coach's corner is a segment between the first and second period of a hockey game here in Canada that's meant to discuss the game. Don Cherry and Ron McClean are the hosts and the clip at the start of the song is from that show. Don Cherry was the one talking about supporting the troops during a hockey game intermission and the singer adresses Ron McClean during the song as being the voice of reason. On a side note: I see contact sports a little like a mosh pit at a metal show: it's violent but without the intent to actually hurt (at least not in any significant way) and a healthier outlet to certain forms of energy so I don't really see the contradiction personally. Good talk though

@Jayme Fortune They frequently discuss class and class struggles in their lyrics, they are a leftist band. You don't actually seem to know what leftism is if you think it has anything to do with Obama. These guys are Canadian and Obama was further right than the Canadian conservative party on most of his policies. You also conflate liberal with left which isn't the same at all.
@deltav864
@deltav864 4 года назад
I fucking hate violent pits... I like the jumpy happy kind with a bit of pushing and light contact. I don't want some douchebag coming in to intentionally hurt. Then again I'm a hemophiliac and probably shouldn't be in the moshpit in the first place. But yeah contact sport is pretty different from killing in a war and there's no irony or hypocrisy in the message that these sporting events shouldn't be a vehicle for military recruitment. Like he says, in the end it's just a kid's game.

Propagandhi is one of the best bands to have ever existed.. If you like that lyric, then you are in store for quite the bounty of incredible lyrics via the genius of Propagandhi. The lyrics are one of the primary elements that make Propagandhi such an unparalleled force in the musical arts. They have never made a bad album, but they were positively reinvented from "Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes" and on through "Victory Lap" I do enjoy the first few albums, but the fan favorite of their catalog thus far is commonly thought to be "Supporting Caste". That being said, I often listen to every album from "Today's Empires.." through "Victory Lap" from start to finish on repeat for months straight. Also... love that "mind blown" moment from Sori when she finds out the Military pays the NFL for propaganda! lol

Propagandhi have been my favorite band since "Less Talk, More Rock". I grew up stuck in a deep red bible belt state and their albums were a needed escape from that. I only just got to see them for the first time a couple years ago. I'm a 36yr old man and was almost brought to tears.
@jeffletourneau5971

These two didn't even scratch the surface of what this song means. No offense to them, but propagandhi are a fucking brilliant band. The cultural worship of the military both in Canada and America are a fucking disease infesting those most easily manipulated by nationalist propaganda. Our countries aren't in danger from military threats. Our countries are in danger from our politicians and capitalist industry. The ultra wealthy won't stop until they've taken everything from the working class. People need to wake the fuck up. Stop buying into the idea we should be fighting one and other. Racism, sexism, homophobia, all of those ideas only appeal to our most primitive instincts of feeling uncomfortable with those different than ourselves. All of us who are struggling to survive are brothers and sisters. We need to stand up for our selves. Those that profit off our labour by the hundreds of millions of dollars and then turn around and hide it in overseas bank accounts and don't pay a fucking cent in taxes... those people are the enemy. Those are the people preventing us from achieving our potential as human beings. Fuck capitalism. Fuck the ultra wealthy. Fuck the global elite.

Propagandhi's singer was an army brat and hockey player, so he's not just talking out his ass here. There's another similar song, "Die Jugend Marschiert", which is about the first-person shooter game America's Army, which was developed by the DoD. If you guys do another one, I think Vin would find the lyrics to "Fedallah's Hearse" quite meaty. "Potemkin City Limits" has great imagery; might tug your heartstrings.

Please Propagandhi more.. any and EVERY. I was in 8th grade when I first heard Propagandhi and I can't even begin to explain how influential they were on shaping me into the man I am today.. I was your everyday average suburbian white kid and their songs made me cock my head and actually start to fucking think on how the world I was brought up in could very well have a different narrative than that which I was being taught and told. Long story short but now I am 38 years old and Propgandhi is my favorite band of all time. I could talk about their music and lyrics for days on end with anybody. They started out as a skate band overflowing with angst and that narrative slapped me in the face and made me question the truths and facts I had been told. They have since aged into a profound voice, almost poetry, learned to master their instruments and musical arrangements and have evolved in a way that I can still, if not more so, relate to but their entire discography has aged like a fine wine and is still completely applicable to today. Words can not describe how emotionally attached I am to this band. Thank you so much for reacting to one of their songs and I hope you do more so in the future. Chris Hannah is a voice that needs to be heard.

Propagandhi have very clever and poetic lyrics. You didn't know it was about hockey because the writer knows his personal experience with military indoctrination in NHL is prolific in all professional sports. The thing about Propagandhi is they are not meant for a superficial easy listen. Their music is very politically charged and kind of a slow burn. I would recommend the song Supporting Caste, if not the entire album Supporting Caste, and read the lyrics along with the songs.
@Damiana_Dimock

I hear ya about the violence, but there is a pretty stark difference between state violence, especially the violence of foreign wars, and the violence that occurs in a sport. A lot of people on the actual left do take shots at sports as an extension of and reinforcement of nationalism, and unlike them, Propagandhi suggests the sport can be a unifying experience without the attached civic pride and overt nationalist sentiment. Heh, I loved how Vin just blew Sori's mind! *All board games did actually originate from tabletop war games, but we've evolved from those origins, right? I would present cooperative games, like Pandemic, as an example of how it is different from what Vin described in terms of mechanics. When it comes to sports, I hear that perspective but I am more in agreement with Propagandhi--sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, sometimes play is just play.

Those amazing things about the USA, the things that make you feel such pride and association and love towards the USA, are not unique to the USA. In fact, those beautiful prinicples are more diluted and symbolic in the USA than the rest of the world. That feeling of "were all in this together" etc, exist in every developed country. The fact that anyone who needs help to make ends meet or to go to the doctor in the USA is a bludger and a loser is case in point.

I never understood how the anthem is played at every game in America. Here in the UK it's reserved for finals and international games.

The clever lines and metaphors are crazier in the song Supporting Caste from this same album. Plus, since you guys do a lot of Christian reactions, that one would definitely be fodder for discussion.

If you do another propagandhi song do 'comply/resit' Great lyrics and the weirdest chord progression ever. Unfortunately it really relates to recent times. You mention Kap and I know this band have a huge fondness to the amazing message he has brought to the forefront. Anyway, for myself, it made me read and learn more about these related issues to the song I mentioned. Once again, great video!

If you haven't, you should read the Christopher Hitchens article it's critiquing. Holy shit, much of the lyrics are word for word and I'm talking about the terrible shit 😳

My father in law kept pushing me to have you respond to Vital Remains forever underground song and I told him I am almost daily, well he passed away tonight in his sleep and there is a pain in me that hurts beyond words. If you get to that song great but I no longer need to request it. May Tom Cartwright rest in peace.

😯 I had no idea the military paid the NFL. That's totally news to me. I've always thought there was conspiracies and money in sports going around n stuff. But I didn't know it was from the military. That's a whole other level of conspiracies I never considered.

Do a video on the wordplay in the old testament. I'm not a religious person, but that topic sounds genuinely interesting.

Unless you are fully immersed in Canadian culture, all the Hockey Night in Canada references may be a bit too specific for you guys. There are MANY more Propagandhi songs that are less specific to a television segment that plays between intermissions on the weekly "Hockey Night in Canada," featuring a segment called Coach's Corner, which until recently featured Ron McLean and Don Cherry. Cherry was recently fired for his comments regarding immigrants to Canada. So this song basically callled out the "sad old man" (Cherry) for his bigotry ten years before he was actually fired for doing what this song references. I think this song was TOO SPECIFIC of a choice for you two, unless you are fully immersed in Canadian culture (or American border cities, like where I live in Buffalo). I would HUGELY recommend you more Propagandhi songs. Suggestions: Note to Self, Unscripted Moments, Speculative Fiction, Fuck the Border, And We Thought the Nation States Were a Bad idea, Today's Empires Tomorrows Ashes, Purina Hall of Fame, and many, many more. Great band (They're my favorite) but you picked the wrong first song to discuss by them. (Love your show!!!!!!)

Do you think you could have looked into what Coaches Corner is or who Ron McLean is before starting to try to talk about this song?

this band had a huge impact on me, I grew up on punk in Canada, on army bases in the 90's, met them once when I was working at a gas station while they were supporting "today's Empire, Tomorrow's Ashes" and didn't get to go to the show because I was working, super sweet guys. most of the books on my shelf were cited in their liner notes, and don cherry is an idiot, lol

I've always liked Propagandhi since I heard them in the mid to late 90s. I don't agree with all their politics but the music is always pretty raw. There's some stuff I agree with and some stuff I don't. I still really like the band and appreciate their music.
