Pothos propagation is easy. It's a great plant to start with if you're new to plant propagation in general, because it roots quite easily in water and doesn't require much care throughout the rooting process.
You can mix and match different varieties if you'd like to create an interesting, blended-variety pothos pot too. I haven't seen many people do this!
In today's video, you're going to learn how to propagate 3 varieties of pothos: Satin, Green Queen, and Marble Queen. Don't worry...the method is the same!

Never owned a house plant until my mother passed and one was left unwanted at her viewing. She always had many plants in the house so I figured I’d give it a home. It’s been almost two years and I’m happy to say that the plant is still thriving. It’s grown to about 8 feet long vines now. I wanted to trim it but being plant illiterate I had no idea how so I turned to RU-vid. I watched a couple videos and I just want to say that your video was the most in depth one I came across. I followed your directions and now have a bunch of pothos plants throughout my home lol. Thank you for the great informative video

Some tips I do that add to success. Add a teaspoon of Colloidal Silver to your water, Use a straw to blow air into the water once a day. This allows you to leave the plants alone without having to change the water until you are ready to transplant. When you transplant keep the potting mix quite wet for the first week then gradually allow to become dryer over time. This way the water roots will become acclimated to the soil and failure is just about 0.
@epicgardening
@epicgardening 5 лет назад
That last tip is crucial...have to let the soil be quite wet

Loved the video, dude. I have one simple tip, though: the more variegated a plant is, the less chlorophyll it has (which is what causes them to look light green or have white patches), so they will develop roots and put out new growth at a much slower rate. That's why your marble queen pothos weren't as "successful" at rooting in the same amount of time. They simply needed more time in water to develop the roots and leaves.
@epicgardening
@epicgardening 5 лет назад
Yup that's a good point, I should have mentioned that!
@humility-righteous-giving
@humility-righteous-giving 3 года назад
its not true ,white patches indicate vibrancy and vigor ,if you want a pothos without white patches than put it in a low light situation ,i have a pothos outside with tons on bright indirect light and it has nice white spots than i have the same variety indoors with filtered light through window blinds and has almost no spots ,while both are healthy looking the one outside is growing more than 10 times faster,white spots and all, while the completely green grows very slowly
@ValerieL456
@ValerieL456 3 года назад
What if you put a drop of chlorophyl in the water? do you think that would help?
@empressdoinalot
@empressdoinalot 2 года назад
@@humility-righteous-giving it is true. The green on leaves is the chlorophyll. The more white a leaf has the less chlorophyll it has. There's a reason why leaves on plants that have variegation and its just plain white, don't do so well or just die. Hence the variegated plants taking longer to root. I have a marble queen trying to root and nearly a week later, it's growing the vines but the roots are taking a while. The golden pothos started rooting within a week.
@humility-righteous-giving
@humility-righteous-giving 2 года назад
@@empressdoinalot variegation ,a new word for me, i know a bit about plants, but i there is allot more i don't know, but my conclusion from what i saw with the same exact genetics of pothos is that it produces the white spots when it has abundant amounts of light and can afford to express the white spots witch makes it look allot more nicer

Pothos is actually a really popular plant in the aquarium community. It is placed right in the aquarium, or in the hang-on-back filter as a means of reducing the nitrates from the fish waste. My wife and I have a whole bunch of it growing in our aquariums. the pothos in her desk aquarium is twining all up and down her desk lamp lol.

I root my cuttings in water exactly as you described then transfer them into pots with soil, I place a glass dome on top of the plant pot which creates a humid environment around the cuttings and they appear to respond very well since golden pothos thrives in humidity. I get an abundance of new shoots & leaves which thickens the overall look and creates a beautiful dense, lush appearance. All my cuttings rooted in water propagate with 100% success and no casualties, the dome also saves me from watering the pot, I just check that the soil is damp to the touch. Then when I have enough foliage covering all the soil surface I remove the dome and maintain the pot with usual watering for pothos and misting with water. Friends & colleagues always marvel at the green, lush appearance and the plants still give off vines, although I keep cutting them back to make yet more cuttings. Love your videos!

I find that the more exotic the variety, the slower pothos is to root. Some of the oldest varieties will put out roots in a week or so, but things like neon can take months. I do find that putting new cuttings in with cuttings that are already rooting seems to encourage the new ones to root faster because the ones that have roots release hormones. Clear or translucent containers work best since light seems to stimulate rooting.
@epicgardening

I’ve read that if you cut a few inches of young growth off a Willow tree (in Spring or Summer) it encourages faster rooting. I haven’t done that BUT did root some young willow branches in water a few years ago and ended up with a 12’ (and counting!) tall tree which I planted in my backyard.

Oh my gosh, this must be the best tutorial I’ve ever seen in my life - and I’ve watched many videos on various subjects. My mom passed away a few years ago and we have one plant that she had for years. We’re trying to propagate and eventually have enough to give one to everyone in the family. Thank you for all the time and energy that you put into this video. I really enjoyed your presentation as well as learned a lot. I’m going to make a decision on if the roots are at the right stage right now.

This was my first time propagating a plant and I followed this tutorial (with minor adjustments) with 100% success. I'm not sure if these little changes actually affected anything, but with my set up I had all my cuttings in one large vase (I thought it'd help to give the roots room to grow?), placed this in a window that got about 5-4 hours of direct sunlight, changed the water every 2 days, and added plant food to the water (de-chlorinated water). My cuttings had about 3-inch roots and budding leaves in about a week and a half, so now they're happily chilling in their new pot c: I really don't know why I haven't tried this sooner. I guess I thought I was gonna screw it up, but your video made it look so easy! I've had my 2 pothos for about 2 years now, and they're getting pretty big and lowkey out of control, considering that I've yet to like.... actually groom them lol

Thank you so much. I tried this with a 12’ Long vine that lost about 1/3 of its leaves. Almost every cutting rooted and I planted them in one pot (about 2 dozen or more). I lost about 4 cuttings in the soil but the cuttings have sprouted so many babies. Literally another dozen babies which I didn’t expect. Sooo happy! Thank you 😊. Oh one more thing I just used shot glasses and wine glasses.

My mother gave me a cutting and I've had it in a glass of water for like five days and nothing happened. I, having no idea of anything, tried to put it into one of my aquariums between a piece of driftwood and the glass. Two days later, it started developing roots and since then, I've let it stay in there, tons of roots and approximately one new leaf per week. It grows vertically along the rim of the aquarium glass. So cool.

I agree it's hard to believe it's not more common! I have always used multi-leaf vine segments (6-12" long) for propogation and they've always done very well. I usually wait until there's a pretty good root mass in water before moving to soil, and they always adjust well with no awkward stage. So interesting to hear other methods also. Great video!

I propagated one of my golden pothos plants a few months ago. All the cuttings rooted, and I transplanted them into the soil when the roots were about an inch long each. But they haven't grown at all in the past month or so. They're not dying, the stems aren't rotting, and the leaves are bright and vibrant. I'm not sure if I did something wrong in the propagation or the planting. I've been giving them indirect light and water about once a week when the top inch of soil is dry, and they've been in a warm environment. Do you have any idea why they're not growing? Anything I can do to encourage them?

I am brand new to gardening. I have been doing Kratky hydroponics since Aug and am now just beginning to learn some things about growing in soil. I am really wanting to plant sweet potatoes and know you have to create slips. I have not had any luck so far with them. (I am in the hot Florida weather so they rotted and got super mushy and stunk without growing any shoots). I would love to figure out what I may have done wrong. I am guessing it was the weather but not sure.

I live in florida and grow a lot all year long. The crazy summers are brutal for all my plants so I know what you mean about rot. We get diseases, bugs, animals, excessive heat, rain and humidity everything bats against us but it can be done. For potatoes I believe they grow best in our winter months. I'm going to experiment soon too, I just never tried potatoes yet. I grow a lot of other vegetables, herbs, cacti abd succulents though, way too many plants to take care of lol. Always adding more. Lol

@planterina tip: use Bobby Pins to pin the cuttings into place! Many aquarists (including myself!) grow pothos hydroponically (great for aquariums). I used to have about 10 cuttings growing in a 2 foot tall cylindrical vase (and baby guppies living inside). The cuttings grew to about 15 feet! (I cut em down and kept going!) One more thing: I think having the different species growing together could result in crazy root growth, each one trying to outcompete the other. Thanks! Nice Propagation Station! 😊

Linda Johnson, I grow a few different kinds of plants in water. I change the water once per week. The night before I change my water I have been fertilizing (very diluted, with more nitrates -less ammoniacal) I just add a small amount and they grow really well. Try that and see. Water roots are so beautiful to me, I just love to grow some plants this way. I would love to hear if that works for you.
@CuriousinNY
@CuriousinNY 5 лет назад
Burstall Pass Thanks. Nitrates as fertilizer? Do you have a name of a product for me to google for purchase? What about worm tea? Or, a Beta?
@burstallpass4394
@burstallpass4394 5 лет назад
I use MaxiGro Fertilizer 10% total Nitrogen, 8.5% Nitrate, 1.5% Ammoniacal. Schultz and Miracle Grow do not list their Nitrogen content, so I assume it is mostly Ammoniacal. As I understand it, plants grown hydroponically are unable to convert to Nitrates given there is no soil/bacteria. I don't know about worm tea or Beta. If you do use this fertilizer a little goes a long way, believe me. I only use 1/4tsp per gallon of water. MaxiGro recommends 1-2, but I have found that way too much! Good Luck.
